  • One of the fundamental, important preconditions for effective teaching of geography is to collect a variety of picture data available for class and to manage the data systematically. The purpose of this study is to present one method about how to supply basic picture data available for class of Korean geography for the high school program to teachers in service and how to collect, manage and utilize the data. A total of 233 picture data related to contents of the textbook of Korean Geography have been gathered through this study, and a database has been constructed for the data. Directories were generated for individual units of the textbook, and the collected picture data was stored in the image file of each directory. This data was recorded in a CD and attached as an appendix. Since the primary purpose of this study is to suggest one method, the picture data in a database for the present study is just a fraction of lots of data available for class of Korean geography. If the user persistently enlarges and manages data based on the results of this study, the data will become a good instructional aid. The picture data can be printed over the transparent film and used for class by using the overhead protector (OHP), or it can be also used as a remote self-study tool through the computer telecommunications network (e.g., LAN or INTERNET. etc,). Most desirable, however, is to develop teachers' own method by taking account of separate units of the textbook or diverse educational environments.

  • With increasing user applicability of geospatial data, user demand for manifold and accurate information has increased. The usefulness of these services derives from their combination of the advantages of as-built geospatial data in making new content. There is a spatial inconsistency and shape disagreement in fusing heterogeneous data. Conflation, defined as the combining of information from diverse sources so as to reconcile spatial inconsistencies and shape disagreement, is possible solution to the problem. In this research, we developed the technique for removing shape disagreement between aerial image and road map removed spatial inconsistency in advanced research. The process includes four processes: producing of a road candidate image, extraction of vertices, and generation of a graph by connecting the vertices. We could remove the shape disagreement using the extracted road that was derived from finding the road possible path.

  • The King George Island, where the King Sejong Station is located, represents one of the gateways to the Antarctica from the point of its geographical aspect. It also serves as an advanced post, and plays an important role in the extending for Korea's Antarctic research activities. The existence of maps is not only a basic element for the constructing geographic informations supporting these activities, but also an implied way of announcing the sovereignty over the KingSejong Station in global world. However, the precise surveying for the geographic information has not been carried out, and thus topographical maps as well as geographic information assuring enough accuracy are still missed in this area. This fact had forced Korea to rely on using maps produced by foreign countries. Therefore, this study aims to generate digital topographical maps of 1: 5,000 scale for the constructing geographic information using lightweight aerial photogrammetry system first. And further, it will contribute to offer practical base data for the future research related to the Antarctic environment through the analysis of glacier retreat and change using this new digital map comparing with existing one.

  • Since 1945, geography textbooks of South Korea and North Korea have been developed differently. Taking both geography textbooks of South Korea(printed in 1996 and 1997) and them of North Korea(printed in 1995), this study compares and analyse geography textbooks of South and North Korea systematically, then to show their likeness and difference. Results of this study are as follows: First, Most of contents in South Korean textbooks consist of explations and many tables, graphs and photographs leading to inquiry activities, whereas those in North Korean textbooks consist of mostly sentences that explain topics, diagrams and sketches. Second, Geographical education in South Korea puts strong emphasis on human geography and regional geography, whereas that in North Korea does strong emphasis on physical geography, economic geography and education of cartography. Third, The geographical words of South Korean textbooks contain words written in Chinese character and words of English origin, whereas Those of North Korean textbooks do many pure Korean words.

  • Recently, the digital map of national basemap has been made through NGIS(National Geographic Information System) project in Korea. The digital map should have to be corrected or updated to cope with the changes in topography in future. For that, the efficient method correspond with digital map should be presented. Digital photogrammetric system has been considered as an efficient method for digital mapping because it provides the results in digital form, but the system if not fully tested because the commercial system is in early stage. This study aims to present the way to correct or update digital map using the digital photogrammetric system. Digital mapping in the environment of digitalphotogrammetric system was executed and the results were analyzed and compared with those from analytical plotter.

  • Recently, in accordance with the introduction of Digital Photogrammetry Systems the use of Digital ortho-photo images have increased and progressed in the study which extract the features from digital ortho-photo image semi-automatically or automatically. However, there are a limit. It has proved in many studies that recognition of the attribution or the features from panchromatic aerial photo is restricted. In this study, I compared color aerial images with panchromatic aerial images and analyzed the characteristics of color aerial images and feature entities which can be extracted semi-automatically. I analyzed extracted feature entities are compared with digital map at a scale of 1:5,000 have constructed in National Geography Institute. With this result, I analyzed the capability of feature extraction and proposed a plan for the study in the future.

  • There has been considerable controversy over the changes in the size of the beaches in the Pusan area; any loss of beach area will have an immense effect on the tourism industry, which is an important source of income for the local economy. The best beaches in Korea are in the Pusan area and were visited by more than 8 million persons in 2000. It is expected that the number of visitors, drawn to the scenic vistas and convenient facilities of this area, will increase annually. Any loss in the size of these swimming beaches will have an important negative effect on tourism income. Therefore, the local governments have gone to great lengths to preserve these beaches, transporting tens of thousands of tons of sand to the beaches before they open each year at a cost of billions of won annually. In this study, we analyzed aerial photographs and tide data for the past 50 years using digital aerial photo analysis and GIS techniques for each 3-year interval. We abstracted beach DEM (digital elevation model) and ortho aerial photographs, and conducted a space analysis. As a result, we were able to identify changes in the area and width of sections of Haeundae Beach.

  • This study aims to discriminate differences in natural landscapes between the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland and the Jirisan National Park in Korea, using functions of content-based image retrieval such as texture, shape, and color. Digital photographs of each National Park were taken and selected. The low-level functions of photographic images were reduced to orthogonally rotated five factors. Based on the reduced factors, a linear decision boundary was obtained between Cairngorms landscapes and Jirisan landscapes. As a result, the discriminant function significantly delineated two groups, resulting in $x^2=63.40$ with df=5(p<0.001). Both the eigenvalue 2.417 and the value of wilks' lambda 0.29 supported that the most proportion of total variability came from the differences between the means of discriminant function of groups. It was estimated that four independent variables explained about 70.7% of total variance of dependent variable. The variable with the largest effect on landscapes was far region-related factor(r=1.07), followed by near region-related factor (r=0.90). A total of 90.7% of cross-validated grouped cases were correctly classified. It was interpreted that far distant regions, as well as near distant regions, had sufficient discrimination power for landscape classification between the Cairngorms National Park and the Jirisan National Park, so that landscape identity of the National Park over cultures was revealed by skylines in a most effective way. Relatively fewer factors making visual landscapes were effectively used to classify natural landscapes of the National Parks which had different semantics.

  • The purpose of this study was to set the boundary of the coastal sand dunes and to analyze the change characteristics of land cover types using aerial photographs on Osan and Dongho coastal sand dunes in Yangyang. The boundaries of sand dunes were established using digital soil map, and land cover maps were made for each year using aerial photographs. As results of analysis, both beach and farmland areas have been decreased, since 1974 and forest area was relatively increased due to planting and forest growth. Facilities and bare land have been greatly increased since 1992. Loss of wetland, and beach due to these changes had an impact on the ecosystem destruction of sand dunes.
