  • This paper introduces a novel way to leverage convolution parse tree kernel to extract the interaction information between two proteins in a sentence without multiple features, clues and complicated kernels. Our approach needs only the parse tree alone of a candidate sentence including pairs of protein names which is potential to have interaction information. The main contribution of this paper is two folds. First, we show that for the PPI, it is imperative to execute parse tree pruning removing unnecessary context information in deciding whether the current sentence imposes interaction information between proteins by comparing with the latest existing approaches' performance. Secondly, this paper presents that tree kernel decay factor can play an pivotal role in improving the extraction performance with the identical learning conditions. Consequently, we could witness that it is not always the case that multiple kernels with multiple parsers perform better than each kernels alone for PPI extraction, which has been argued in the previous research by presenting our out-performed experimental results compared to the two existing methods by 19.8% and 14% respectively.

  • A further purified fraction (D-O-ANa) was obtained from DPG 3-2 fraction of Ginseng Radix by complete removal of saponins, nucleosides, nucleic acid bases, amino acids, and sugars. D-O-ANa - induced insulin release was investigated to compare with that of DPG 3-2 and other isolated components. Among the sub fractions of DPG 3-2, D-O-ANa exhibited the most potent release of insulin with or without high concentrations of glucose, and it particularly enhanced the second phase of glucose-induced insulin release. DGP 3-2 potentiated significantly the glucose-induced insulin release from the isolated islets of diabetic mice at increasing concentrations of extracellular calcium ions (0.16 - 2.5 mM). A definite relationship was found between calcium $(^{45}Ca)$ uptake and insulin release. Ginsenoside $(G)-Rb_1\;and\;G-Rg_1$ did not enhance the glucose-induced insulin release. The effect of ginseng saponins was blocked by glucose (16.7 mM), being distinctly different from the glucose-potentiated effect of DPG 3-2. The insulin release effect of $G-Rg_1$ was unaffected by the presence or absence of extracellular $Ca^{2+}$ and theophylline. Adenosine also increased insulin release from isolated islets, but had no effect on perfused rat pancreas. Arginine stimulated insulin release less evidently than D-O-ANa, though arginineand adenosine-induced glucagon releases were more remarkable. In conclusion, D-O-ANa appears to be a major fraction in insulin release activity of ginseng and its mode of action may be related to $Ca^{2+}$ ion uptake. This physiological mechanism was distinct from that of the abnormal release induced by ginseng saponins.

  • Prefetching is an effective method to minimize the number of roundtrips between the client and the server in database management systems. In this paper we propose new notions of the type-level access pattern and the type-level access locality and developed an efficient prefetchin policy based on the notions. The type-level access patterns is a sequence of attributes that are referenced in accessing the objects: the type-level access locality a phenomenon that regular and repetitive type-level access patterns exist. Existing prefetching methods are based on object-level or page-level access patterns, which consist of object0ids of page-ids of the objects accessed. However, the drawback of these methods is that they work only when exactly the same objects or pages are accessed repeatedly. In contrast, even though the same objects are not accessed repeatedly, our technique effectively prefetches objects if the same attributes are referenced repeatedly, i,e of there is type-level access locality. Many navigational applications in Object-Relational Database Management System(ORDBMs) have type-level access locality. Therefore our technique can be employed in ORDBMs to effectively reduce the number of roundtrips thereby significantly enhancing the performance. We have conducted extensive experiments in a prototype ORDBMS to show the effectiveness of our algorithm. Experimental results using the 007 benchmark and a real GIS application show that our technique provides orders of magnitude improvements in the roundtrips and several factors of improvements in overall performance over on-demand fetching and context-based prefetching, which a state-of the art prefetching method. These results indicate that our approach significantly and is a practical method that can be implemented in commercial ORDMSs.
