  • Two newly recorded alien plants Geranium dissectum L. (Geraniaceae) and Dianthus armeria L. (Caryophyllaceae) have been found in Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do and in Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, of South Korea, respectively. Geranium dissectum can be easily distinguished from other related Korean taxa by fruit with glandular hairs and distinctly reticulated seeds. Dianthus armeria can also be distinguished from other related Korean taxa by its cyme and pubescent calyx. We provide descriptions of the morphological characters, illustrations, photographs and a key to allied taxa.

  • Pollens and their preparations that are being sold as a health food in Korea were examined for. morphology and identity. The Iimall packages of sixteen items of the pollen foods were selected and investigated by staining and microscopy. It was shown that all fifteen items except one contained intact pollens which retain their sporoderms. On the basis of their morphological characteristics, they were identified as the pollens of the plants which belong to ten families: Betulaceae, Compositae, Cornaceae, Cgperaceae, Fagaceae, Geraniaceae, Graminae, LeguminoBae, Liliaceae and Pinaceae. Since the sporoderms which can act as a potent allergen to certain persons were not removed, these pollen. foods can not be safe as a food and. may cause systemic allergy. The only preparation that did not show its sporoderm is less likely to cause allergy than the others.

  • Vegetative characters (e.g. habitat, root, ramification and habit of stem, phyllotaxy, leaf sape, shape of leaf margin, shape of division and lobe of division, number of division, thick and texture of leaf and shape of stipule) on 35 species of Asian Geranium were reviewed to discussion propriety of taxonomic character and evolutionary trends. Wilfordii group is characterized by three divided leaf, Farreri group was grown a high altitude, and Maculatum group is grouped by life cycle of anneal. Arrangement state of leaf is alternate type G, tripartitum, G. eriostemon, and G. erianthum is thought the more primitive than the other taxon, and regarded as more advanced group the sibiricum group and pseudosibiricum group which divided of leaf deeply. Shape of leaf, division degree of lobes, shape of leaf margin and number of division are considered a good identification characters because width of change are fixed between population.

  • Phylogenetic analyses were conducted to evaluate evolution and relationship of 16 taxa of Korean Geranium including 3 outgroups using ITS (internal transcribed spacer) squences of nuclear ribosomal DNA. Phylogenetic studies used most parsimony and neighbor-joining methods including bootstrapping and jackknifing analysis. As the result, Korean Geranium forms monophyletic group. In the parsimony tree G. koraiense var. hallasanense situated as the most basal clade and Erianthum group forms one clade by high bootstrap ans jackknife values (100% of bootstrap and jackknife values). G.dahuricum as one of the Krameri group is closely related with Palustre group by very weak relationship (37% of bootstrap and 44% of jackknife values) and the node collapse in the strict tree. G. Knuthii which was one of wilfordii group is closely related with Koreanum group. G. sibiricum, one of Sibiricum group, is the most closest relationship with G. soboliferum and these species are sister to G. krameri. G. tripartitum and G. wilfordii which are wilfordii group are linked to G. nepalense, G. thunbergii f. pallidum and G. thunbergii. This result suggested that the phylogenetic analysis of ITS sequences should be useful to address phylogenetic questions on the genus Korean Geranium.
