  • Two types of reactor were designed to neutralize acid mine drainage flow from closed mine. Limestone used as a neutralizer, which composed mainly of calcite with small amount of dolomite. In general, the effect of neutralization depended upon both the position of reaction and the amount of supply of neutralizer. It was observed that the neutralization was enhanced as the reaction with acid mine drainage occurred at the upper part of reactor with sufficient supply of neutralizer. When the reaction was sustained in upper part of the reactor, the neutralizer was not affected by precipitates and the reaction could last until all of neutralizer was consumed.

  • The characteristics of ammonia removal by natural neutralizer were studied by using a scrubber type equipment. As operation parameters, neutralizer dilution ratio, neutralizer inlet flowrate, air flowrate and initial ammonia concentration were selected and their effects on ammonia removal efficiency were investigated. The optimal removal effect was achieved at neutralizer dilution ratio of 1.0% and neutralizer inlet flowrate of $60m{\ell}/min$. On the other hand, with respect to air flowrate and initial ammonia concentration, there was no significant effect on removal efficiency, when loading rate was considered. In addition, ammonia removal reaction was investigated by analyzing the ammonia oxides, such as nitrites and nitrates, after reacting ammonium solution with natural neutralizer. The result shows a partial oxidation by natural neutralizer besides dominant absorption of ammonia.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze and improve the experiment of the acid-base neutralization reaction described in science textbooks. The problems in the neutralization reaction of NaOH-HCl solution were following; 1) the decoloration of phenolphthalein solution, 2) the color change of the titrated solution during condensation for the confirmation of the salt crystals, 3) the difficulty for the confirmation of the salt crystals. These problems are explained by the structure change of phenolphthalein and the improved experiment is proposed.

  • This paper reports on the experimental investigation carried out to evaluate the physical optimal conditions in the absorption column to remove odorous hydrogen sulfide gas. Hydrogen sulfide gas, as a highly undesirable contaminant, is most widely emitted from environmental treatment facilities. The absorbent mixed with natural second metabolites extracted from conifer trees and chemical absorbent of 2-aminoethanol was applied to remove it via chemical neutralization. The absorbent of natural second metabolites was achieved by a removal efficiency of 20-40% by itself depending on the treatment conditions, but the complex absorbent mixed with 0.1% amine chemical provides the removal efficiency of 98%. The optimal removal efficiencies have been examined against the two major parameters of temperature and pH. This study shows that the aqueous solution by natural second metabolites can be used as an appropriate absorbent in the column absorbed for the removal of hydrogen sulfide gas.

  • This paper was investigated to clarify the possibility of ammonia gas removal by essential oil. First of all, the chemical analysis was peformed to analyze the composition of an essential oil by GC-MS. The monoterpenes in an essential oil react with ammonia by neutralization and their reaction mechanism was elucidated. Based on their chemical neutralized reaction, the removal efficiencies of ammonia gas were studied to derive the optimal conditions in the scrubber tower such as optimal temperature and pH. The experimental result shows that the removal efficiency of ammonia gas was achieved over 98 % by the misty aerosol dispersion of scrubber tower.

  • This paper presents experimental research results to evaluate the applicability of chemical neutralization reaction and ultrasonic wave to remove cement paste and mortar attached to the surface of recycled aggregate. In order to derive optimal ultrasonic cleaning efficiency and chemical neutralization reaction, experiments were conducted using variables such as ultrasonic frequency and type of chemical solution. As a result, the optimal frequency was found to be 24 kHz, and immersion in a 15% hydrochloric acid solution for 30 minutes of stimulation showed the highest efficiency. In addition, the specific gravity, absorption rate, and wear rate of the quality-improved recycled coarse aggregate were similar to those of general aggregate and were found to satisfy all KS F 2527 standards. Therefore, it is believed that the recycled aggregate whose quality has been improved through the method proposed in this study can be used for concrete.

  • I investigated Korean college students' conception about the volume change of solution when they detected the equivalence point during acid/base titration experiment using method of volume measurement. According to this study, most college students had a misconception that the volume increment was due to the formation of water by neutralization during acid/base titration. However, this is not enough to explain the volume change, neglecting contribution of a salt in solution. I calculated the partial molar volume of NaCl formed to explain the volume increment of solution during HCl/NaOH neutralization. Comparing the result of experiment with the calculation of partial molar volume, I elucidated that the main effect of volume increment was due to the partial molar volume of NaCl formed during HCl/NaOH neutralization. Here I propose to introduce college students to the concept of partial molar volume of the salt formed to reduce misconception about the volume change of solution during acid/base neutralization.

  • Increasing public concerns over odors and air regulations necessitates the remediation of a wide range of odorous compounds for industrial purpose. Currently, wet scrubbing technique by neutralization using essential oils is utilized to treat methyl mercaptan odor. The chemical analysis is performed to analyze the composition of an essential oil by GC-MS. The objective of this study is to clarify the possibility of the neutralization of odors sprayed in the fixed bed and determine the removal efficiencies in the misty aerosol by different input odor concentration. It is found that methyl mercaptan is significantly removed in the wet scrubber, and their removal efficiency of methyl mercaptan is obtained by 98%.

  • The effect of pH on the dehydration reaction of TiCl₄solution. KOH and HCl were used as a accelerater and retarder in dehydration. Results are follow. Neutralization point is pH 7.4 in the system of $TiCl_4-KOH$ and the production which is produced at acidic side is Ti-gel of poly metatitanic acid. The production which is produced at alkalic side is aligomer and crystalline potasium titanate is not detected.
