  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate polymerization of TheraCal LC, one of the tricalcium silicate cements. To measure the Vickers hardness number (VHN), the specimens were cured at different light curing time and distance. As a result, the VHN of the upper surface was significantly higher than the lower surface's in all groups (p < 0.05). The VHN of the lower surface was increased significantly with the increase of the light curing time in all distance (p < 0.05). When the distance was more than 4.0 mm at all light curing time, the VHN of lower surface was significantly decreased (p < 0.05). When the specimen was light cured for 20 seconds, the VHN of the lower surface did not exceed 2, which corresponds to 10% of the upper surface's. These results suggested that the 20 second light curing time was not sufficient to polymerize the lower surface under specific conditions and that light-curing time should be increased.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a various light curing time on the residual monomers released from light-cured dental sealant, and to examine the effectiveness of surface treatment in reducing the oxygen-inhibited layer of light-cured dental sealant($Helioseal^{(R)}$ F, Vivadent, Liechtenstein). Specimens were cured with a halogen light curing unit(XL 3000, 3M, USA) for 20, 40, 60s. Surface treatment of a light-cured dental sealant included no treatment(control group), a 10-seconds exposure to distilled water(Group I), 10-seconds manual application using a cotton pellet wetted with 75% alcohol(Group II), and 10-seconds application of a water/pumice slurry using a rubber cup on a slow-speed handpiece The specimens were eluted in distilled water for 10 minutes. All elutes were analyzed by HPLC for identification and quantitive analysis of monomers. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. 1. None of the chromatograms of the tested sealant displayed peaks with the same retention time as that of the standard solution, except for TEGDMA. 2. The release of TEGDMA decreased with increasing curing time in conventional halogen light. 3. All surface treatment group had a decrease of monomer release in comparison with no treatment group. 4. Treatment that Group III eliminated the greatest amount of any type of residual monomers. 5. The elution of unreacted monomers from curing with halogen curing unit for 60s and Group III was less than other groups.

  • With the introduction of the xenon plasma arc curing light and the LED curing light as orthodontic curing lights, the polymerizing time of orthodontic composites has clearly decreased. In contrast to various research cases regarding the polymerization time and bond strength of the xenon plasma arc curing light, not enough research exists on the LED curing light, including the appropriate polymerization time. The objective of this research was to compare the bond strength of the plasma curing light and the LED curing light in regards to the polymerization time. The polymerization time needed to achieve an appropriate adhesion strength of the bracket has also been studied. After applying orthodontic brackets using composite resin onto 120 human premolars, the plasma arc curing light and the LED curing light were used for polymerization for 4, 6, and 8 seconds accordingly. This research proved that the LED curing light provided appropriate bond strength for mounting orthodontic brackets even with short seconds of polymerization. The expensive cost and large size of the device limits the use of the plasma arc curing light, whereas the low cost and easy handling of the LED curing light may lead to greater use in orthodontics.

  • For the purpose of elucidating the polymerization modes of dual-cure restorative materials and comparing them with single-cure restorative materials, a study was performed on the light-cured composite resin, dual-cure composite resin, dual-cure glass ionomer cement and chemical-cure glass ionomer cement. By measuring the microhardness of each material at 0mm, 1mm and 3mm depth during initial 24 hours with predetermined interval, the state of polymerization and degree of conversion was indirectly evaluated for each material, and obtained results are as follows : 1. All of four materials tested showed significant increase in microhardness after 24hrs compared with just after curing starts. 2. In all materials except Ketac-fil, there showed a significant difference in microhardness between each depth at each time interval. 3. In the test of lap time till final curing for each material, the polymerization process was revealed to last longer in the dual-cure type materials than in single-cure type materials at 3mm depth. Based on the results above, it was demonstrated with materials of dual-cure mode that the degree of conversion increases by successive curing reactions even in the deeper layers where sufficient curing light is impermeable.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of different light direction exposure times and setting times when using plasma arc light on shear bond strength of metal brackets. 240 extracted human premolars were randomly assigned to one of 16 groups Standardized brackets were bonded to enamel using different light curing units (Plasma arc light and Halogen light), exposure times (Plasma arc light 2. 4, 6 seconds and Halogen light 20 seconds). and light directions [Vertical direction [V] and Oblique direction [O]). 8 groups were tested after 5 minutes and the remaining 8 groups after 24 hours. The metal brackets were bonded with Transbond XT. Shear bond strength was measured by a universal testing machine. The results were as fellows: There were as differences between the shear bond strengths of the Vertical groups (V) and Oblique groups (O). regardless of exposure times and types of light curing units (p>0.05). The shear bond strength of the group with 2 seconds of plasma light were significantly lower than other exposure time groups (P<0.05). The shear bond strength tested after 5 minutes was lower than after 24 hours (p<0.05) The Adhesive Remment Index (ARI) score showed no statistically significant difference among the different groups. The results of this study suggested that the light direction of plasma arc light had no influence on the shear bond strength of metal brackets to enamel. and exposure times more than 4 seconds produced shear bond strengths similar to those Produced with a conventional halogen curing light.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate curing degree of three dual-cure resin cements with the elapsed time in self-cure and dual-cure mode by means of the repeated measure of micro-hardness. Materials and Methods: Two dual-cure self-adhesive resin cements studied were Maxcem Elite (Kerr), Rely-X Unicem (3M ESPE) and one conventional dual-cure resin cement was Rely-X ARC resin cement (3M ESPE). Twenty specimens for each cements were made in Teflon mould and divided equally by self-cure and dual-cure mode and left in dark, $36^{\circ}C$, 100% relative humidity conditional-micro-hardness was measured at 10 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 3 hr, 6 hr, 12 hr and 24 hr after baseline. The results of micro-hardness value were statistically analyzed using independent samples t-test and one-way ANOVA with multiple comparisons using Scheffe's test. Results: The micro-hardness values were increased with time in every test groups. Dual-cure mode obtained higher micro-hardness value than self-cure mode except after one hour of Maxcem. Self-cured Rely-X Unicem showed lowest value and dual-cured Rely-X Unicem showed highest value in every measuring time. Conclusions: Sufficient light curing to dual-cure resin cements should provided for achieve maximum curing.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the distance of the light tip to the surface of restoration and exposure time on the polymerization of surface and 2mm below the surface of light-activated composite resins. Two light-activated composite resins were used. From the experiment, the following results were obtained. 1. Relative light intensity rapidly decreased when distance of the light tip to the surface of material is more than 2mm(p<0.05). 2. In all groups, microhardness was increased according to the increase of relative light intensity and exposure time(p<0.05). 3. The distance of the light tip to the surface of restoration and exposure time more affected 2mm below the surface rather than the surface(p<0.05). 4. Although exposure time was increased, difference of microhardness of the 2mm below the surface with the distance of the light tip to the surface of restoration was relatively high in Z100 between below 4mm and other groups and Z250 between below 2mm and other groups(p<0.05).

  • Autopolymerized resin facilitates a more rapid and easier means for the construction of removable orthodontic appliances than heat cured resin. But many reports reveal that more unreacted monomer is found in autopolymerized resin. It is very important to achieve maximum degree of polymerization because if polymerization is inadequate, high level of unreacted monomer has been shown to adversely affect mechanical and physical properties, and also the question of allergy or toxicity to methylmethacrylate must be considered. The purpose of this study was to compare the degree of polymerization according to curing method and curing time. Five groups were desinged ; Group 1 was polymerizied at room temperature($28^{\circ}C$) ; Group 2 in $28^{\circ}C$ water ; Group 3 in $28^{\circ}C$ water under 30psi pressure ; Group 4 in $43^{\circ}C$ water ; Group 5 in $43^{\circ}C$ water under 30psi pressure for 10 minutes, 1 hour 12 hours, 1 day and 3 days. The degree of polymerization was measured by means of Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy. The results were as follows: 1. The degree of polymerization increased constantly in accordance with curing time in all groups and after curing for 10 minutes, Group 1 showed significantly higher degree of polymerization after 12 hours and Group 2, Group 3, Group 4, Group 5 after 1 hour(p<0.05). 2. The degree of polymerization decreased in the order of Group 5, Group 4, Group 3, Group 2, Group 1 except when the curing time was 1 hour and 12 hours(p<0.05). 3. The degree of polymerization of Group 4, Group 5 cured at $43^{\circ}C$ showed significantly higher degree of polymerization than Group 2, Group 3 at $28^{\circ}C$ except when the curing time was 1 day(p<0.05). 4. Among Group 2, Group 3 and Group 4, Group 5, the pressure had no effect on polymerization except when the curing time was 12 hours(p<0.05). 5. Between Group 1 and Group 2, the method of storage had no effect on polymerization except when the curing time was 1 hour(p<0.05).

  • In recent years, xenon plasma arc lamp was introduced for high-intensity curing of composite filling materials in direct resin restorations. In this study, two types of restorative materials, namely composites point $4^{(R)}$ and $Z250^{(R)}$ were selected and curing was conducted using a conventional halogen light and two plama curing lights. Two different resin composites were cured using the different units($Flipo^{(R)}$, Ultra-lite 180A, and $TriLight^{(R)}$) and tested for microhardness. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that exposure to a plasma curing lamp for 3, 6. 9 seconds is equivalent to 20 or 40 seconds of irradiation using a conventional halogen curing unit. 1. $Flipo^{(R)}$ and Ultra-lite 180A were able to polymerize point $4^{(R)}$ at 6 seconds to a degree equal to that of the $TriLight^{(R)}$(control) at 40 seconds. 2. $Flipo^{(R)}$ was able to polymerize $Z250^{(R)}$ at 9 seconds to a degree equal to that of the $TriLight^{(R)}$(control) on the bottom surface at 20 seconds. whereas Ultra-lite 180A could not do. 3. Two plasma curing units were able to cure the test-composites with bottom/top ratios approximately 61% to 96% at 3 to 9 seconds. There were some differences between the two composite brands, with $Z250^{(R)}$ displaying less difference between top and bottom hardness values. For point $4^{(R)}$ and $Z250^{(R)}$, at least 6 or 9 seconds were necessary to produce microhardness equivalent to that of the $TriLight^{(R)}$ curing at 20 or 40 seconds.
