Relationships between the Change in Obesity Rate and Risk Factors of Metabolic Syndrome among Middle School Students in Ulsan (중학생의 비만율 변화 및 대사증후군 발생 위험요소와의 상관관계)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide fundamental materials for improving school health promotion programs by investigating the relationships between the change in obesity rate and risk factors of metabolic syndrome among middle school students in Ulsan. We analyzed the routine health check-up data in 58,298 2nd-year middle school students in Ulsan, which conducted by the Planned Population Federation of Korea from 2007 to 2011. The overall and girls obesity rates gradually decreased throughout the first four years but increased again in 2011. The boys obesity rates were highest in 2008 and lowest in 2010. Throughout the research years, the incidence rates of over-weight and obesity were statistically significantly higher in boys compared to girls(P<0.05). Prevalence rates of the metabolic syndrome, assessed with the modified Cook criteria except high blood pressure, were 0.58%, 0%, 0.01%, 0.31% and 4.53%, respectively in total, low, normal, over-weight, and obese groups. It indicates that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing and directly related to the obesity rate among adolescents. Hypertriglyceridemia was the most common component (36.58%) of the metabolic syndrome among the middles school students followed by low HDL cholesterol (6.47%), abdominal obesity (3.72%), and high blood sugar (0.47%). Prevalence of the various components of the metabolic syndrome were significantly higher in the obese group compared to other groups. In this study we observed the decrease in obesity rates between 2007 and 2010, and developing obesity prevention programs is essential in order to maintain the trend. Additional study should be necessary to find the cause of increase of obesity rate in 2011 and so to create more effective school health promotion programmes.

Factors of Students' Career Choice Related to Science (초.중.고 학생들의 과학 관련 진로 선택 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to survey the students' career choice related to science. Important factors of career choice were identified through factor analysis. 'Perception of career related to science', 'preference for science learning' and 'participation in science-related activity' were three main factors of science-related career choice. Students' responses to the three main factors were compared according to their career choice, grade and gender using ANOVA. Regression analysis was adopted to find out the relative importance among the three main factors. The subjects were 947 grade 6, 9 and 11 students in Seoul. Numbers of boys and girls in each grade was almost same. The questionnaire was developed to know the factors of students' science-related career choice after preliminary research and literature survey. The ratio of science-related career choice was not high (26%). Students' responses to and the relative importance of the three main factors differed with the grade and gender. From the results, making students have preference for science and giving them more opportunities of science-related activity is more important than making them have positive perception of science-related career. It is required to make a material for science career education considering the differences of age and gender using this study results.

A Study on Solving Word Problems through the Articulation of Analogical Mapping (유추 사상의 명료화를 통한 문장제 해결에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to examine how analogical mapping articulation activity played a role in solving process in word problems. We analyzed the problem solving strategies and processes that the participating thirty-three 8th grade students employed when solving the problems through analogical mapping articulation activities, and also the characteristics of the thinking processes from the aspects of similarity. As a result, this study indicates that analogical mapping articulation activity could be helpful when the students solved similar word problems, although some of them gained correct answers through pseudo-analytic thinking. Not to have them use pseudo-analytic thinking, it might be necessary to help them recognize superficial similarity and difference among the problems and construct structural similarity to know the principle of solution associated with the problematic situations.

The Propensity for Conspicuous Consumption of Middle School Students (남녀 중학생의 과시소비경향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the factors related to the propensity for conspicuous consumption of adolescent consumers. Data for this study were collected from 530 adolescent consumers who were in the 8th grade of middle school in Guri city. There were significant differences between boys and girls in the propensity for conspicuous consumption of adolescents. The propensity for conspicuous consumption of boys was higher than girls. The influences of friends and mass media. and self-esteem were found to predict the propensity for conspicuous consumption of adolescents.

Influence of Psychological Well-being and Emotional Expressiveness in Middle School Students on their Peer Relationships (중학생의 심리적 안녕감과 정서표현성이 교우관계에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined the middle school students' psychological well-being, emotional expressiveness and peer relationships according to sex, and the relationships among them. The participants of this study were 391 second grade students at a middle schools located in Gyeonggi-do. The collected data were analyzed using a t-test, Pearson's correlation analysis and stepwise multiple regression analysis. The results were follows: First, there were significant differences in the psychological well-being, emotional expressiveness and peer relationships according to sex. Female students had higher levels in all variables than male students. Second, there were significant relationships among psychological well-being, emotional expressiveness and peer relationships. In addition, psychological well-being and positive emotional expressiveness, negative expressiveness in the sub-factor of emotional expressiveness were significant predictors of peer relationships. These findings provide suggestions regarding the plan to improve middle school students' peer relationships.

Effects of Suicidal Attitudes, Perception of Life, and Depression on Adolescents' Suicide (자살 태도, 삶의 인식, 우울이 청소년의 자살에 미치는 영향)

  • The Korea Convergence Society. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of suicidal attitude, perception of life, and depression on adolescents' suicide(ideation, plans, attempts). Data on general characteristics, the Attitude Toward Suicide, the Perception about Life, and the Korean version of Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale-Revised were collected in 889 second-year middle school students in the I area. Two hundreds forty six students (27.67%) indicated they had suicide ideation, 85 had suicide plans (9.56%), and 46 had suicide attempts (5.17%). The proportion of female students was significantly higher than that of male students. The suicide indices (ideation, plans, attempts) increased as one shows lower body image satisfaction, higher depression, lower subjective mental and physical health, and lower leisure satisfaction. Predictors of suicide ideation included suicidal attitude (solution and permissiveness), depression, subjective mental health, and body image satisfaction. Predictors of the suicide plan were permissiveness and solution among suicidal attitude, and depression, subjective mental health, and those of suicide attempts were permissiveness and depression. Conclusion: This study suggests that much effort is required to decrease depression and improve perception of life and suicidal attitude in the suicide prevention education for adolescents.

A PRELIMINARY STUDY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ASSESSMENT SCALE FOR ADHD IN ADOLESCENTS:RELIABILITY AND VALIDITY FOR CASS(S) (청소년 ADHD 평가 도구 개발을 위한 예비연구-CASS(S)의 신뢰도 및 타당도 연구)

  • Although Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) has been considered as the disorder occurring during childhood, the prevalence is increasing among adolescents and adults. The prevalence rate varies from 2.0 to 14.3% due to the difference of diagnostic criteria, different assessment methods, or subjects' age difference. Therefore, it needs to make age specific(i.e., for children, for adolescents, and for adults) assessment tools. Authors translated Conners-Wells Adolescents Self-Report Scales(short form)[CASS(S)] in to Korean to get validity and reliability as a way of development of assessment tool for adolescent with ADHD in Korea. CASS(S) was translated and corrtected by three psychiatrists and one clinical psychologist. To examine the concurrent validity and test-retest validity, CASS(S) was applied with K-YSR on one class of each grade in a middle school in Seoul with two week interval(total 115:male 58, female 57). To test validity, authors analysed and got Cronbach's as internal consistency. Construct validity was done by principal axis factor analysis on 4,354 students. As a result, Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency was .88, Pearson coefficient for test-retest reliability .83, and coefficient for concurrent validity .65. And in the factor analysis to examine construct validity, three factors were revealed as cognition, hyperactivity, and conduct. These results shows that CASS(S) may be useful tool for adolescents with ADHD, although there was a limit not to be done the comparison with clinical groups.

A Survey of Oral Health State, Oral Health Awareness and Dental Treatment perception for Middle Schoolers in Hwaseong (화성시 중학생의 구강건강 실태, 인식 및 치과치료에 관한 개별반응 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the oral health state, oral health awareness and oral health behavior of middle school students in a bid to raise concerns about oral health problems in a local community and help ensure the efficiency of oral health programs. The subjects in this study were 662 seventh graders in 14 different middle schools located in the city of Hwaseong. The findings of the study were as follows: Frist, In terms of indices related to dental caries, DMFT index numbered 2.0. Secondly, as to subjective oral health state, 22 percent of the boys and 10.9 percent of the girls found their own oral cavity to be healthy, and the gap between them and the others was statistically significant different(p=.000). Thirdly, in regard to tooth-related habits, the girls brushed their teeth more often than the boys(p=.000). Fourthly, for snack-intake habits, the largest number of the boys ate between meals once(42.1%), and the second largest group of them did it two or three times(31.3%). Fifthly, regarding how they felt about dental treatment, the greatest number of the boys and girls replied there's nothing special when they were asked about their mood in case of seeing a dentist next day. The second largest group answered they would get a little nervous. As to mood while waiting for treatment, the greatest number of the boys and girls answered they would get a little nervous. In regard to mood while lying on a dental chair, the largest group replied they would be nervous. Concerning mood while lying on a dental chair for scaling, most of them answered they would get nervous.

An Analysis of Gender-Role Stereotype in the Illustrations of Middle School Science Textbooks Developed under the 2009 Revised National Curriculum (2009 개정 교육과정에 의한 중학교 과학 교과서의 삽화에 제시된 성역할 고정관념에 대한 분석)

  • In this study, the illustrations in the 27 middle school science textbooks developed under the 2009 Revised National Curriculum were analyzed in the aspect of gender-role stereotype, and the results were compared with those of the 2007 Revised National Curriculum. The results of the analyses revealed that male pupils in the illustrations appeared more frequently than female pupils at all grades, and that the gender gap of pupils appeared in the illustrations slightly increased in comparison with those of the precedent curriculum. Similar to those of the precedent curriculum, the gender gap in other activities were particularly large regardless of publishers. In the illustrations of adults, the frequencies of male outnumbered female, and highly gender biased compared with those of pupils to mean that gender bias in the illustrations of adults were not improved at all. While the ratio of female was high in house works, that of male was high in outdoor activities regardless of publishers. The gender gap in outdoor activities increased in comparison with that of the precedent curriculum. Most occupations illustrated were male-dominated, and the majority of scientists were portrayed as male.

Improvement of Students' Problem Finding and Hypothesis Generating Abilities: Gifted Science Education Program Utilizing Mendel's Law (문제발견 및 가설설정 능력 신장 과학영재교육프로그램 개발: 멘델의 과학적 사고과정 적용)

  • In the process of establishing the principle of genetics, Mendel discovered problems based on various observations. Mendel's scientific thinking ability can be effective if this ability is embedded in gifted science education programs. The study aims to develop a science gifted education program utilizing Mendel's scientific thinking ability shown in the principles of genetics and examine students' changes in scientific thinking ability before and after the program implementation. For the program development, first, the characteristics of Mendel's scientific thinking ability in the process of establishing the principle of genetics were investigated and extracted the major elements of inquiry. Second, the science gifted education programs was developed by applying the inquiry elements from the Mendel's Law. The program was implemented with 19 students of $7^{th}$, $8^{th}$ graders who attend the science gifted education center affiliated with university during July 2011. The Mendel's scientific thinking ability was classified into induction, deduction, and integration. The elements of inquiry extracted from the Mendel's scientific thinking include making observation, puzzling observation, proposing causal questions, generating hypothesis, drawing inference, designing experiment, gathering and analyzing data, drawing conclusions, and making generalization. With applying these elements, the program was developed with four phases: $1^{st}$ - problem finding; $2^{nd}$ - hypothesis generating; $3^{rs}$ - hypothesis testing and $4^{th}$ - problem solving. After implementation, students' changes in scientific thinking ability were measured. The findings from the study are as follows: First, students' abilities of problem finding is significantly (p<.05) increased. Second, students' abilities of hypothesis generating is significantly (pp<.05) increased.
