  • In the present study, a 2-D chimera technique for overlapped bodies in relative motion is developed using unstructured triangular meshes. The solid boundary nodes located next to the intersecting point between bodies are merged to the intersecting point to assure accurate representation of the intersecting region. In order to assign proper value of flow variables at the nodes located out of the computational field, interpolation is conducted for non-active nodes. For validation, the motions of a NACA64A006 airfoil and a NACA0012 airfoil with a plane flap are computed and the results are compared with other simulations. The motion of a launching missile ejected from a NACA0012 airfoil is also simulated.

  • In this study, numerical simulation of airframes separating from a missile system has been preformed. For the time-accurate trajectory simulation, six D.O.F equations of motion of multiply connected bodies were derived and these equations have been coupled with the unstructured overset mesh technique for the treatment of independent mesh blocks moving with each body component. Applications were made for the simulation of the airframe separation at missile angles of attack of 0 and 5 degrees. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of unsteady time-accurate flow fields involving multiple bodies in relative motion.

  • In this paper an automated hole-finding method for overset grids is introduced which uses recursive octree-cell division. A graphic program which enables the user to do the hole-cutting with ease is also introduced. Using this program it was found that a proper combination of the level of octree division and vector calculation should be used for efficient and fast hole finding.

  • An unstructured parallel overset mesh method has been developed for the simulation of unsteady flows around multiple bodies in relative motion. For this purpose, an efficient and robust search method is proposed for the unstructured grid system. A new data-structure is also proposed to handle the variable number of data on parallel sub-domain boundary. The interpolation boundary is defined for data communication between grid systems. An interpolation method to retain second-order spatial accuracy and to treat the points inside the neighboring solid bodies are also suggested. A single store separating from the Eglin/Pylon configuration is calculated and the result is compared with experimental data for validation. Simulation of unsteady flows around multiple bodies in relative motion is also performed.

  • In this paper, helicopter aerodynamics is simulated in hovering and forwarding flighst. The governing equation is the unsteady Euler equation. To consider the blade motion and moving effects, an overset grid technique is applied in this simulation. At the boundary, the Riemann invariants condition is used for inflow and outflow. To validate this method, the result is compared with Caradonna-Tung's experimental data.

  • In aerospace structural design, the position of lightening hole is often required to be optimized from the initial design in order to avoid an excessive stress concentration. To remodel the updated configuration in optimization procedure, re-meshing procedure is conventionally adopted. However, this approach is time-consuming, and has limitations especially in handling hexahedral or quadrilateral meshes, which are preferred because of their good numerical performances. To attenuate these disadvantages, new optimization scheme is proposed by combining the MLS(Moving Least Squares) based overset method and the genetic algorithm in this work. To test the validity of the proposed optimization scheme, optimizations of positions of lightening holes in 2D structures have been carried out.

  • A numerical investigation of the stage separation behavior of two-body vehicle focusing on its flow characteristics were carried out. For this simulation, separation of a booster from vehicle was modeled by a chimera grid system and calculated by using commercial code, CFD-FASTRAN$^{TM}$. Consideration of a spring force, gravity and relative acceleration of a booster was the essential factor that simulates the realistic situation. In this study, It was validated that the booster separation time decreases with increase in flight mach number and angle of attack. In view of the results so far achieved, it was expected that the dynamics modeling and boundary condition set up applied in this study will be helpful in a estimation of a safe stage separation and event sequence of flight test.

  • Chimera grid methods have been widely used in Computational Fluid Dynamics due to its simplicity in constructing grid systems over complex bodies, and suitability for unsteady flow computations with bodies in relative motion. However, the interpolation procedure for ensuring the continuity of the solution over overlapped regions fails when the so-called orphan cells are present. We have adopted the MLS(Moving Least Squares) method to replace commonly used linear interpolations in order to alleviate the difficulty associated with the orphan cells. MLS is one of the interpolation methods used in mesh-less methods. A number of examples with MLS are presented to show the validity and the accuracy of the method.
