While new evidence on international spillover effects has been widely discussed around the globe, the MENA (Middle East and North African) region has received little attention concerning international transmission of stock market movements. In this paper, we discuss international spillover effects between the major developed markets (US, Japan and Germany) and the emerging markets in the MENA region (Turkey and Egypt). While GARCH-type models have mainly been used to investigate international stock market spillovers in much of previous studies, we develop new testing strategies based on discrete wavelet decomposition. The basic finding is that price as well as volatility spillover effects exist from the developed stock markets to the MENA counterparts, although evidence for price spillover to the Egyptian market is rather weak. As for the interdependence of the major MENA stock markets, no spillover effects are found between these markets, while the two MENA markets are somewhat related with each other.

The purpose of this study is to examine the trends of import and export of Korea by each continent and to find ways to increase export to Korea in the future. Each continent selected Asia, Europe, North America, Central and South America, and the Middle East. The analysis period was 220 months from January 2000 to April 2018, and data were collected from the KCS. Regression analysis showed that the coefficient was higher in Asia, Europe, North America, Middle East and Latin America. The markets of each continent moved independently of each other and were statistically significant at t statistic and p-value(${\leq}0.01$). As a result of this study, Asia and North America have been major export markets in Korea. Europe, the Middle East and Central and South America are emerging as new markets in Korea. In order to increase Korea's exports in the future, there is a need for continued interest in Asian markets including China & Southeast Asia.

Owing to the excavation of Goseong Munam-ri site, there has much advance in study of chronology of the early Neolithic Age flat-bottom potteries distributed in the mid-eastern part of Korean Peninsular. Relics such as stone tools, clay products, ornaments as well as potteries from Goseong Munam-ri site reflect cultural relation with Boisman culture in Duman river basin area and with the southern part of Korean Peninsular. Common features can be found in some potteries, arrowheads, scrapers, and sinkers from Boisman culture and Goseong Munam-ri site. There are much more common features in pottery and earring-making techniques observed in Goseong Munam-ri site and the southern part of the peninsular. Thus it may be possible to analogize migration or spread of people from the mid-eastern part to the southern part of Korean Peninsular.

Kala-azar는 우리나라에는 분포하지 않는 것으로 인정되고 있으나 과거 중국에서 감염되어 국내에서 관찰된 보고가 있는 질병이다. 최근에 중동 지방에서 감염되어 귀국하고 발병하였다고 생각되는 예를 보고한다. 서울에 주소를 둔 26세의 한국인 남자가 1년간 사우디 아라비아에서 건설기능공으로 근무하고 1981년 9월 귀국하여 약 8개월 후인 1982년 5월 경부터 심한 피로감, 전신쇠약, 복부의 수물등을 느끼기 시작하였다. 환자가 국립서울병원을 거쳐 서울대학교병원에 1982년 9월 17일 입원할 당시에는 간과 비장이 모두 14cm정도 만져질 만큼 부어있었고, 심한 체중 감소(4개월간 14kg의 감소), 적혈구, 백혈구, 혈소판등 모든 혈구의 감소등이 관찰되었다. 간생검을 통해 amastigote가 관찰되고 이는 투사전자현미경을 통해서 전형적인 amastigote형으로 확인되었다. 환자는 국외에서 구한 약제인 sodium antimony gluconate(Pentostam )와 각종 보조요법에 의해 치료를 받았다. 퇴원 직전에 시행한 간생검에서 괴사된 간 조직이 섬유화로 대치된 것이 확인되었고 충체는 관찰되지 않았다. 이 Kala-azar 에는 1952년 만주에 유입되어 보고된 3예 이후로는 처음 관찰된 것으로 중동에서 유입된 것으로는 첫번째 보고례이다. 최근 급격히 늘어난 해외 인력진출을 감안하면 해당 지역의 열대 풍토병에 대한 다각적인 대책이 절실히 요청된다.

최근 국제원유시장의 구조는 원유시장이 성립된 이래 가장 복잡하고 이해하기 어렵다고 볼 수 있다. 세계적으로 연료수급균형을 둘러싸고 예측할 수 없는 수 많은 변화 요인과 관련, 업계가 적절히 대응할 수 있는데 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 가운데, 세계최대의 상품거래소중의 하나인 NYMEX(뉴욕상품거래소)가 지난 10월 23일 인터컨티넨탈 호텔에서 NYMEX중동원유세미나를 가졌다. 이 세미나는 내년초 중동산 원유인 오만ㆍ두바이의 신규상장을 앞두고 원유선물거래 및 옵션거래제도를 알리기 위해 대한석유협회에서 후원하고 NYMEX가 주최하는 것으로 업계, 협회 및 기타 관련기관에서 약 80여명이 참가했다. 다음은 이 세미나에 앞서 22일 석유협회에 내방한 NYMEX의 John Howlet 마케팅부장과의 인터뷰 내용을 정리한 것이다. <편집자 주>

지금까지 인류의 생활을 영위하기 위해 사용되어온 에너지 자원은 주로 화석연료가 대부분이었다. 대부분의 화석연료는 석유와 석탄으로 구성되어 있으며 그 중에서 석유는 인류의 생활에 없어서는 안될 매우 중요한 에너지 자원이 되었고 여러 방면에서 사용되고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 석유 매장량은 중동지방에 집중되어 있고 매장량이 한정되어 있다. 특히 석유는 국제 정세에 의해 중동지방으로부터의 원유공급이 불확실해질 수 있고 각 지역으로 석유공급을 할 때 관련되는 비용이 높은 문제점을 가지고 있다.(중략)
