  • We investigated in the existential forms of heavy metals and their distribution in plant and soil surrounding ruined mine in Daduk area. The content of heavy metals in soils was more plentiful in A soil than that in another soil, excepting only Mn. The content of Mn in soils was greater in B soil than those in another soils. The content of each heavy metals, according to existential form, had different patterns on the comparision of each elements ; organic-form on Cd and As, Carbonate-form Cu, Pb and Mn and Residual-form on Fe and Zn. The popularity ration of M. senensis and J. decipiens were about 65% and 72%, respectively, and which means that these plants had resistances to heavy metals. The contents of heavy metals absorbed in root was higher than those of stem except Mn, In M. sinensis, the contents of Zn in root was similar to that of stem. To study the heavy metal contents in water, the highest content of heavy metal, mainly Fe, Mn and Zn, were calculated in extracting water.

  • Wasted${\cdot}$rested mine areas give lots of effect on around-environmental changes after mining development. Leaching water at reclaimed land has been eluted from the solid components through physical, chemical, biological procedures by waters percolated through reclaimed site. The element analysis of waste tungsten ore tailing, leaching water analysis and removal of heavy metal by zeolite were performed to investigate the influent of acid rain on the released contents of H. M. The heavy metal contents in leaching water were determined to be As $1.21\;{\sim}\;1.54\;ppm$, Pb $0.11\;{\sim}\;0.15\;ppm$ and $SO_4\;^{2-}$ was $302\;{\sim}\;378ppm$. As deionized water and simulated acid rain (pH 3,4) were percolated through columns packed tungsten ore tailing, the amount of Mn, Na, Ca which were dissolved by pH4 solution was higher than those by distilled water. However, W and Mo were eluted easily by high pH solution. The change of heavy metal concentration by column experiment packed zeolite was effective a little because heavy metals were adsorved much more by zeolite.

  • The present study was carried out to assess dietary exposure and risk for the infant population by lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) exposure through modified milk powder and formulas. Analysis of heavy metals was performed using a microwave device and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, the method for which was fully validated. Various samples (n=204), including modified milk powder, modified milk, follow-up modified milk powder, infant formula and follow- up formula, were collected from retail outlets and markets across Korea. The mean contents of heavy metals were Pb 0.0004 (modified milk)-0.010 (infant formula) mg/kg, Cd 0.002 (modified milk)-0.007 (follow-up formula) mg/kg, and As 0.004(modified milk)-0.040 (infant formula) mg/kg, respectively. For risk assessment, daily intakes of heavy metals through maximum intake of modified milk powder and formulas were calculated and compared with reference doses established by JECFA and WHO. The dietary exposures of heavy metals were $0.78-1.04{\mu}g$ Pb/d, $0.65-0.87{\mu}g$ Cd/d, and $2.25-3.00{\mu}g$ As/d, corresponding to 2.0-4.5%, 7.1-16.0%, and 0.4-0.9% of reference doses, respectively. Therefore, the level of overall dietary exposure to heavy metals for Korean infant through food intake was below 20% of the reference dose, indicating a low risk to infant consumers.

  • In order to clarify ecological survival strategy of Rumex crispus community dominating under contaminated area of lower region of Kumho riverside including Chimsangyo (CS), Paldalgyo (PD), Talseochon (TS) and Kumhogyo (KH), we analyzed the content of heavy metals and inorganic matter and vegetative growth. R. crispus showed rapid formation of community by high growth rate, high T/R ratio and showed maximum T/R ratio at the contaminated area Talseochon. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents in R. crispus showed high value in shoot than that of root. T/R ratio of nitrogen and phosphorus showed 3.1∼3.6 and 1.5∼4.5 for the early growth stage, and 6.7∼17.3 and 3.9∼8.3 for the late one, respectively. The absorbed heavy metals by riot were translocated to shoot, the heavy metal content in shoot higher than those in root of Cu, Zn, Fe, and Pb for 3.6, 1.7, 1.5 and 4.8 times, respectively. Distribution ratio of the heavy metals in each organ showed 61∼85% and 15∼39% for shoot and root, respectively. R. crispus accumulated heavy metals in the order of Fe>Zn>Cu>Pb in shoot, and showed maximum values of Cu, Zn, Fe and Pb for 89.7, 376.6, 2946.1 and 13.2 ㎍/g dw, respectively at Talseochon in April. A physiological and morphological characteristics of R. crispus showed thickened leaf, increased water content above 80% and rapid growth of shoot. R. crispus showed ecological adaptation to the contaminated area by transportation of heavy metals and inorganic matter to shoot, and by accumulation of Ca ion in root.

  • The analysis of heavy metals associated with both PM2.5 and PM10 fraction of aerosols was made from a northeast region of Seoul during the spring period of 2001. The mean concentrations of fine (PM2.5), coarse (PM10-PM2.5), and PM10 fraction were observed as 49.3${\pm}$29.2, 50.5${\pm}$35.0, and 95.5${\pm}$46.1 ${\mu}g$/m$^3$, respectively during this study period. According to the results of enrichment factor (EF) analysis between different particle fractions, major elements (including Fe, Ca, Na, and K) were found to exhibit EF values of less than 10. However, heavy metal components (like Zn and Pb) showed very high EF values. Comparison of fine/coarse (F/C) concentration ratio showed that Zn, Cr, Pb, and Ni have higher ratio values than others. The metallic composition of particles was also compared on both absolute and relative terms. The results of our analysis showed an evidence that the increase in the total metallic contents is prominent during the spring period due mostly to the Asian Dust event.

  • This work carried out to analyze the physicochemical properties and investigate the assessment of heavy metal contamination of stream sediments of the Yudeung and the Gab streams in the Daejeon area. The pH of stream sediments of the Yudeung stream shows the range of weak acid and weak alkaline. Most of stream sediments contain about 80% sand grain and have low water and cation retention capacity. Hence the stream sediments are not suitable fur various plans to grow up. The analysis of heavy metals in the stream sediments shows that the concentration of Pb, Cr and Cd increases from upstream to down stream. It is likely that the trend has a relationship with the water. Contamination of stream water. The authors recommend that clay materials be replenished in the stream sediments to increase the self-purification capacity and to make the suitable condition for growing up of various plants, and that water quality of the stream which can Influence into the contamination of stream sediments be monitored.

  • The purpose of this study is the evaluation of adsorption capacity of casts for heavy metals comparing with the activated carbon. The casts was obtained from vermicomposting of the mixed organic sludges which were generated from the treatment facilities for leather wastewater and cattle wastewater. The physico-chemical characteristics of cast was investigated. Also, the batch adsorption experiments of cast and activated carbon for heavy metals were carried out, and the results were analyzed by Freundlich isotherm. The buffering capacity to the acidic wastewater was founded in the cast, and the cation exchange capacity of cast impling adsorption capacity for soluble substances was evaluated as about 55me/100g. Those were implied that the cast have a large potential as a good adsorbent for soluble pollutants in wastewater. From the results of batch experiments, the removal efficiencies of tested various heavy metals including Pb, Cu, Cd, and Cr were very high value as 89-98% for the activated car-bon, and 80~95% for the casts except for Zn. The adsorption equilibriums for the two materials were achieved within 90 minutes. The order of preferable metals in the adsorption was found to be Pb>Cu>Cd>Cr>Zn on the cast and to be Pb>Cd>Cu>Cr>Zn on the activated carbon, respectively. From the above results, it might be con-cluded that cast is effectively available as a good adsorbent to treating the heavy metal bearing wastewater.

이러한 결과는 현장에서 접촉수의 pH가 강산이나 강염기라 하여도, 고화체의 buffering 효과에 의해 시간이 지남에 따라 수용액의 pH가 낮아져 고화체로부터의 중금속 용출은 매우 감소할 것임을 의미한다.ss of an active application defined using the model.
