The connection type of steel moment frames in the country is mostly fabricated in factories so that it is fairly ductile due to good quality control. Based on references, the domestic connection satisfies the performance limit for steel intermediate moment frames specified by the AISC. However, the current KBC2009 building code specifies various systems for steel moment frames such as ordinary, intermediate, and special moment frames while the former KBC2005 only did so for a ductile moment frame. This induces the necessity of investigating which system is appropriate in the country when the domestic connection is applied. Therefore, this study was aimed at finding a proper design method by comparing the ductile moment frame in KBC2005 and the intermediate moment frames in KBC2009. The results showed that seismic design parameters for the ductile moment frames can be reasonable for satisfying the performance objective.

The objective of this research is to evaluate the seismic performance of steel intermediate moment frames(IMFs) with different heights. The seimic performance is conducted according to ATC-63. Three-, six, nine- and twelve-story IMFs are designed according to KBC 2009. The connection is modeled to have a drift capacity of 0.02rad, which is required for IMF connections. This study shows that the probability of collapse increases with an increase in the height of the frame. Nine- and twelve-story frames did not satisfy the requirement specified in ATC-63.

Recently, the concept of seismic design has changed from prescriptive to performance based design. For the performance based design with the specified target performance of the structure, it is necessary to execute the inelastic structural analysis to predict precisely the actual behavior of the structure. To address this issue, the seismic performance of the 5-story RC moment-resisting frames designed in accordance with KBC2009 is evaluated through push-over analysis and economic analysis is conducted focused on the direct construction costs. The results show that the ordinary and the intermediate moment-resisting frame are evaluated to meet the required performance design criteria and that the direct construction costs of the two frames are similar. However, although the special moment-resisting frame designed with strong column-weak girder philosophy satisfies the required performance design criteria, the direct construction cost is uneconomical compared with other frames. Therefore, although the intermediate moment-resisting frame of design category D is prohibited in IBC2012, the ordinary and the intermediate moment-resisting frame are estimated to be more reasonable than the special moment-resisting frame for the design of 5-story RC moment-resisting frame.
ACI 318 (1999) defines three types of moment frames: Ordinary Moment Resisting Concrete Frame (OMRCF), Intermediate Moment Resisting Concrete Frame (IMRCF), and Special Moment Resisting Concrete Frame (SMRCF). OMRCF is the most popular type of moment frame in mild seismic zones that requires the least detail and design requirements. This study focuses on the seismic performance of Ordinary Moment Resisting Concrete Frames (OMRCF) designed only for gravity loads. For this purpose a 3-story OMRCF was designed in compliance with the minimum design requirements in ACI 318 (1999). An one third 3 story specimen was made and tested. For scaled model, the similitude law of true replica was applied. The specimen was loaded with quasi-static reversed cyclic lateral loading. The overall behavior of OMRCF is quite stable without abrupt strength degradation. It is found that tested frame has the base shear strength larger than the design base shear for seismic zone 1, 2A and 2B calculated using UBC 1997.

In this study, the response modification factor for a RC IMRF is evaluated via pushover analysis, where 5-story structures were designed in accordance with KBC2009. The bending moment-curvature relationship for beams and columns was identified with a fiber model, and the bending moment-rotation relationship for beam-column joints was calculated using a simple and unified joint shear behavior model and the moment equilibrium relationship for the joint. The results of the pushover analysis showed that the strength of the structure was overestimated with negligence of the inelastic shear behavior of the beam-column joint, and that the average response modification factor for category C was 7.78 and the factor for category D was 3.64.

This study investigated the behavior of out-of-plane skewed moment connections that were designed as IMFs, as per the Korean standards. A total of 14 finite element models were constructed with the consideration of two types (single- and double-sided connections) and four levels of skew angle (0°, 10°, 20°, and 30°). The results indicated that the skewed connections considered in this study met the acceptance criteria for IMFs given by the codes. However, the load-carrying capacities of skewed connections were decreased as the skew angle increased. For the connection with a skew angle of 30°, the peak load was noted to be 13% less and the energy dissipation capacity could be 26% less than that of non-skewed connection. In addition, because of the skewed nature, the stress distribution in the skewed beam flange near the connection was asymmetric and the stresses were concentrated on the beam inner flange. Column twisting induced by the skewed configuration was very small and negligible in the beam and column combination considered in this study.
Moment frames have been widely used in building construction. In current design codes, concrete moment frames are classified into ordinary, intermediate, and special moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF, IMRCF, SMRCF)). The objective of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of columns in ordinary moment resisting concrete frames (OMRCF) and intermediate moment resisting concrete frames (IMRCF). For this purpose 3 story OMRCF and IMRCF buildings were designed and detailed in compliance to ACI 318 (2002) and KCI (1999). In this study the buildings were assumed to be located in seismic zone 1 classified by UBC (1997). This study considered the columns in the 1st story since these columns shall resist the largest axial and lateral forces during an earthquake. Eight 2/3 scale column specimens were made for representing the upper part and lower part of exterior and interior columns of the OMRCF and the IMRCF Quasi-static reversed cyclic loading was applied to each specimen with a constant or varying axial load. Test results show that seismic behaviors of columns are influenced by existence of lap splices, axial force levels, and lateral reinforcement at possible plastic hinging region. However, the effect of such variables strongly co-related to each other.

Domestic steel moment resisting frames were designed in accordance with the former KBC2005 and the current KBC2009, and then their seismic performance was evaluated in accordance with FEMA355F by utilizing nonlinear dynamic analysis. The results from the procedure in FEMA355F were different with those from the capacity spectrum method utilizing nonlinear static push-over analysis. In particular, the domestic steel moment resisting frames have a weak panel zone, so their behavior can be estimated more precisely by nonlinear dynamic analysis. The domestic steel moment resisting frames satisfied the performance goal if located at a site class $S_B$ or $S_C$, regardless of the story number and the response modification factor. However, if they are located at a site class $S_D$ or $S_E$, performance goal satisfaction cannot be guaranteed. No matter what standard is used for the design, KBC2005 or KBC2009, the domestic steel moment resisting frames may possess satisfactory seismic performance if the site condition is relatively good.

Steel intermediate moment frames (IMFs) have been generally used as seismic load resisting systems (SLRSs) of a building to provide resistances against strong ground shaking. However, most of low and mid-rise steel buildings in Korea were constructed during pre-seismic code era or before the introduction of well-organized current seismic codes. It has been recognized that the seismic performance of these steel IMFs is still questionable. In order to respond to such a question, this study quantitatively investigates the seismic capacities of steel IMFs. Prototype models are built according to the number of stories, the levels of elastic seismic design base shear and the ductilities of structural components. Also, the other prototype models employing hysteretic energy dissipating devices (HEDDs) are considered. The collapse mechanism and the seismic performance of the prototype models are then described based on the results obtained from nonlinear-static and incremental-dynamic analyses. The seismic performance of the prototype models is assessed from collapse margin ratio (CMR) and collapse probability. From the assessment, the prototype model representing new steel IMFs has enough seismic capacities while, the prototype models representing existing steel IMFs provide higher collapse probabilities. From the analytic results of the prototype models retrofitted with HEDDs, the HEDDs enhance the seismic performance and collapse capacity of the existing steel IMFs. This is due to the energy dissipating capacity of the HEDDs and the redistribution of plastic hinges.
Cyclic loading tests for the PC moment frame with plastic shear hinges were performed to evaluate the seismic performance. The plastic shear hinges consisted of two steel plates were installed at the mid-length of the beam to connect the PC frames. Three shear links are existed in each steel plate. The three shear links were designed using shear force corresponding to the shear capacity of 50%, 75%, and 100% of the beam shear capacity. The proposed connections showed an efficient energy dissipation capacity and good structural performance. As a result, it is reasonable to design the plastic shear hinges using design shear capacity less than 100% of the beam shear capacity.
