  • To investigate the usefulness of AASHTO joint opening equation, joint movement of Korea Highway Test Road was monitored and analyzed. The monitored section included Lean, Rubble, BB3 subbase. Demac gauges were installed at each joint in the monitored section, and joint movements with temperature changes were monitored. The measured joint movements with temperature change were then analyzed based on ER (Effective Ratio). The effect of subbase, which was considered as 'C' value in AASHTO equation, was not shown in the observed joint movement. To study the effcet of sealing on joint opening two unsealed sections were included in the monitored section, and no effects of sealing on joint movement were observed.

  • It is known that the long-term behavior and performance of jointed concrete pavement due to slab curling are affected by the environmental factors such as temperature, moisture, and so on. However, any relationships between the curling and its factors have not been defined clearly yet because of insufficient detailed investigation. The temperature, relative humidity, strain, vertical displacement of a concrete slab, and horizontal movement of its transverse joints were investigated by various sensors and devices instrumented in the slab of a concrete pavement section constructed for this study. The constraint of the curling by joint stiffness was investigated in addition to effect of the temperature and moisture on the early aged concrete slab by analyzing the field data measured for approximately 4days from concrete placement. The curling of the concrete slab showed 24hour cycles mainly because of the temperature effect, and the upward curling gradually increased because of the long-term effect of drying shrinkage of the concrete. The magnitude and variation of the curling were significantly affected by the joint stiffness which is comprised of aggregate interlocking and other factors. The effect of the variation of the seasonal joint stiffness varying with the temperature and long-term drying shrinkage on the slab curling will be investigated as a further study.

  • The objective of the present study is to evaluate the shear transfer capacity of transverse reinforcement at the concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. The transverse reinforcing bars were classified into two groups: V-type for the arrangement perpendicular to the interface and X-type for inclined-crossing arrangement. The transverse reinforcement ratio at the interface varied from 0.0045 to 0.0135 for V-type and 0.0064 to 0.0045 for X-type. The mechanism analysis proposed for monolithic concrete interface, derived based on the upper-bound theorem of concrete plasticity, was modified to evaluate the shear friction capacity of concrete interfaces with smooth construction joint. Test results showed that the specimens with X-type reinforcement had lower amount of relative slippage at the interface and higher shear friction capacity than the companion specimens with V-type reinforcement. This observation was independent of the unit weight of concrete. The mean and standard deviation of the ratios between the experimental shear friction strength of smooth construction joints and predictions obtained from the proposed model are 1.07 and 0.14, respectively.

  • In this research, the early-age movements of joint at JPCP(Jointed Plain Concrete Pavement) were measured by field tests. The field tests were carried out for 5 days just after concrete placement, for 1 day after 52 and 72 days on Chung-Ang Expressway construction site in Dan-yang on the 28th and 29th of May 2001. The joint movements were measured by demec gauge and clip gauge. The results of regression analysis for the data measured during early 5 days showed that the joints of No.4, No.5, No.6, No.10, No.13, and No.15 could be considered as a moving joint. From data analysis on july 20, the joints of No.2, No.9, and No.10 showed the significant correlations from the minus value of coefficient of regression. As a result of regression data on August 8, joint movements occurred at all joints. Joint freezing and closure could be judged from the regression analysis using joint opening and total temperature measured at field tests.

  • A spalling model for jointed connote pavements(JCP) was developed using the data of distresses, climates, and materials at the sections of long-term pavement performance(LTPP) investigation. The total of forty-four spatting distress data was collected at twenty-two JCP LTPP sections in 1999 and in 2004. In addition, the data of climates, geometric shapes of the slabs, and material properties was also collected at those times. Factors significantly influencing the spalling distress were found by a sensitivity analysis for the data. Consequently, a spatting model was developed by a multi-regression analysis for the factors. The model showed reasonable trend of the spatting development comparing to other foreign models.

  • The installation of joint is to prevent random cracking due to drying shrinkage stress of concrete slab. However contraction joint spacing is empirically implemented into slab constructions without detail calculation based on quantitative criteria. In this study, shrinkage strain of concrete due to concrete shrinkage stress was measured to suggest joint spacing based on the study results. The test environmental conditions were applied temperature of $15^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity of 60%. The design compressive strength used was 30 MPa and 40 MPa, which are currently used in concrete slab designs. The drying shrinkage test result was applied to drying shrinkage models (ACI 209R, CEB MC 90, B3, GL 2000 and Sakata). The results showed that the most appropriate model was ACI 209R model. Based on the research findings, quantitative contraction joint spacing locations were calculated.

  • Deflections of jointed concrete pavements at test road are monitored during 48 hours. And methods of calibration with respect to curling deflections are suggested. Relations between deflection ratio of center to joint at test time and deflection ratio of center at test time to center at reference time are described by regression. From deflections at test time, deflections transformed to reference time which gives minimum deflections in a day are estimated through regression curves and concluded to propose as a alternative method of curling calibration with more data accumulation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the causes that induce the T-shape cracks at the joints in the jointed concrete pavements(JCPs). The finite element models of JCP including dowel bars were developed and the stress distribution in the slab was investigated under environmental loads. To investigate the effect of dowel bars on the transverse stresses at the joints that induce the T-shape cracks, the slab curling behavior was analyzed with and without dowel bars. In addition, the stress concentration was investigated when the dowel bar was not installed at the mid-depth of the slab. The results of this study showed that the transverse stresses were not affected by the dowel bars if the dowel bars were installed at the mid-depth of the slab. However, if the dowel bars were not installed at the mid-depth, the transverse stresses were concentrated at the dowel bar locations when the slab curled. The stress concentration was dependent on the contact characteristics between the dowel bar and concrete, and was significantly large when the dowel bar not installed at the mid-depth was located far from the edge of the slab. Therefore, to mitigate T-shape cracking in JCP, dowel bars should be very carefully installed and leveled at the proper locations.
