A potential-based panel method has been developed for numerical computation of wave resistance on a hybrid hydrofoil. Hybrid hydrofoil is composed of a main body, two struts and two hydrofoils. The main body, which is assumed to be an axisymmetric body for the present analysis, is normally used to support displacement of a body with its buoyancy. Normal dipoles and the sources are distributed on the body(main body, struts, hydrofoils) and the sources are distributed on the free surface. Linearized free surface and the radiation conditions are satisfied using the fourth order finite difference operator and the semi-linear pressure Kutta condition is used for the numerical computation of the hydrofoils. Poisson type free surface condition has been used for the numerical computation and hyperboloidal panel method has been used for better numerical accuracy. To verify this numeric method, model tests are performed in circulation water channel. From the comparison of experimental results with numeric ones, the present method can be used as a useful tool for the design of high speed vessels.
A simplified method for determining the three mode(I, II, III) components of the strain energy release rate of free-edge delaminations in composite laminates is proposed. The interlaminar stresses are evaluated using the interface moment and the interface shear forces which are obtained from the equilibrium equations at the interface between the adjacent layers. Deformation of an edge-delaminated laminate is analysed by using a generalized quasi-three dimensional classical laminated plate theory. The analysis provides closed-form expression for the three components of the strain energy release rate. The analyses are performed for composite laminates subjected to uniaxial tension, with free-edge delaminations located symmetrically and asymmetrically with respect to the laminate midplane. The analysis results agreed with a finite element solution using the virtual crack closure technique.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to find an inclination slope of the screw thread that is favorable in distributing the stresses to alveolar bone by using three dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and methods: Three types modelling changed implant thread with fixed pitch of 0.8 mm is the single thread implant with $3.8^{\circ}$ inclination, double thread implant with $7.7^{\circ}$ inclination and the triple thread implant with $11.5^{\circ}$ inclination. And three types implant angulation is the $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ on alveolar bone. The 9 modelling fabricated for three dimensional finite element analysis that restored prosthesis crown. The crown center applied on 200 N vertical load and $15^{\circ}$ tilting load. Results: 1. The more tilting of implant angulation, the more Von-Mises stress and Max principal stress is increasing. 2. Von-Mises stress and Max principal stress is increasing when applied $15^{\circ}$ tilting load than vertical load on the bone. 3. When the number of thread increased, the amount of Von-Mises stress, Max principal stress was reduced since the generated stress was effectively distributed. 4. Since the maximum principal stress affects on the alveolar bone can influence deeply on the longevity of the implants. When comparing the magnitude of the maximum principal stress, the triple thread implant had a least amount of stress. This shows that the triple thread implant gave a best result. Conclusion: A triple thread implant to increase in the thread slope inclination and number of thread is more effective on the distribution of stress than the single and double thread implants especially, implant angulation is more tilting than $10^{\circ}$ on alveolar bone. Thus, effective combination of thread number and thread slope inclination can help prolonging the longevity of implant.
The brittle materials like rocks show complicated strain-softening behavior after the peak which is hard to model using the classical constitutive models based on the relation between strain and stress tensors. A kinematically constrained three-dimensional microplane constitutive model is developed for granite. The model is verified by fitting the experimented data of Westerly granite and Bonnet granite. The triaxial behavior of granite is well reproduced by the model as well as the uniaxial behavior. We studied the development of the fracture zone in granite during blasting impact using the model with the standard finite element method. All the results obtained from the microplane model developed are compared to those from the linear elasticity model which is commonly used in many researches and practices. It is found that the nonlinearity of rocks sigificantly affects the results of analysis.
Statement of the problem: Under anatomical limitations on maxillary posterior region, a poor crown-to root ratio acting on dental implants can result in undesirable stress in surrounding bone, which in turn can cause bone defects and eventual failure of implants. Purpose: The purpose is to compare stress distribution due to different crown-root ratio and effect of splinting between natural teeth and implants in maxillary molar area under different loads. Material and methods: Analysis of stress arising supporting bone of the natural teeth and the implant was made with 3-dimensional finite element method. The model simulated naturel teeth was made with 2nd premolar and 1st molar in the maxillary molar region (Model T). The model simulated implants placed on same positions with two parallel implants of Straumann Dental Implant cemented abutment (Model I). Each model was designed in different crown-root ratio (0.7:1, 1:1, 1.25:1) and set cement type gold crown to make it non-splinted or splinted. After that, 300 N force was loaded to each model in five ways (Load 1: middle of occlusal table, Load 2: middle of buccal cusp, Load 3: middle of lingual cusp, Load 4: horizontal load to buccal cusp of anterior abutment only, Load 5: horizontal load to middle of buccal cusp of each abutment), and stress distribution was analyzed. Results and conclusion: On all occasions, stress was concentrated at the cervical region of the implant. Under load 1, 2 and 3, stress was not increased even when crown-root ratio increases, but under load 4 and 5, when crown-root ratio increases, stress also increased. There was difference in stress values between natural teeth and implants when crown-root ratio gradually increases; In case of natural teeth, splinting decreased stress under vertical and horizontal loads. In case of implants, splinting decreased stress under vertical loads 1,2 and 3, but increased maximal stress under loads 2 and 3. Under horizontal loads, splinting decreased stress, however the effect of splinting decreased under load 5 than load 4. Furthermore, the stress was increased, when crown-root ratio is 1.25:1. Clinical implications: This limited finite element study suggests that the stress on supporting bone may be increased under non-axial loads and poor crown-root ratio. Under poor crown-root ratio, excessive stress was generated at the cervical region of the implant, and decreased splinting effect for stress distribution, which can be related to clinical failure.
In the present study, a method of quasi-three dimensional stability analysis is proposed for a systematic design of the GRS-RW(Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall) system based on the postulated three dimensional failure wedge. The proposed method could be applied to the analysis of the stability of both the straight-line and cove-shaped are. As with skew reinforcements. Maximum earth thrust expected to act on the rigid face wall is assumed to distribute along the depth, and wall displacements are predicted based on both the assumed compaction-induced earth pressures and one dimensional finite element method of analysis. For a verification of the procedure proposed in the present study, the predicted wall displacements are compared with chose obtained from the RMC tests in Canada and the FHWA tests in U.S.A. In these comparisons the wall displacements estimated by the methods of Christopher et at. and Chew & Mitchell are also included for further verification. Also, the predicted wall displacements for the convex-shaped zone reinforced with skew reinforcements are compared with those by $FLAC_{3D}$ program analyses. The assumed compaction-induced earth pressures evaluated on the basic of the proposed method of analysis are further compared with the measurements by the FHWA best wall. A parametric stduy is finally performed to investigate the effects of various design parameters for the stability of the GRS-RW system
In the present study, a method of the three-dimensional limit equilibrium stability analysis of shape of the potential failure wedge for the concave-shaped excavation corner is assumed on the basis of the results of the FLACSU program analysis. Estimation of the three-dimensional seepage forces expected to act on the failure wedge is made by solving the three-dimensional continuity equation of flow with appropriate boundary conditions. By using the proposed method of three-dimensional stability analysis of the concave-shaped excavation corner, a parametric study is performed to examine the reinforcement effect of skew soil nailing system, range of the efficient skew angles and seepage effect on the overall stability. Also examined is the effect of an existence of the right-angled excavation corner on three-dimensional deflection behaviors of the convex-shaped skew soil nailing walls. The results of analyses of the convexshaped excavation corner with skew soil nailing system is further included to illustrate the effects of various design parameters for typical patterns of skew nails reinforcement system.

In this work, the effect of composite couplings on hub loads of a hingeless rotor in forward flight is investigated. The hingeless composite rotor blade is idealized as a laminated thin-walled box-beam. The nonclassical effects such as transverse shear, torsional warping are considered in the structural formulation. The nonlinear differential equations of motion are obtained by applying Hamilton's principle. The blade response and hub loads are calculated using a finite element formulation in space and time. The aerodynamic forces acting on the blade are calculated by quasi-steady strip theory. The theory includes the effects of reversed flow and compressibility. The magnitude of elastic couplings obtained by MSC/NASTRAN is compared with the classical pitch-flap $({\delta}3)$ or $pitch-lag({\alpha}1)$ coupling. It is found that the elastic couplings have a substantial effect on the behavior of $N_b/rev$ hub loads. Nearly 10 to 40% of hub loads is reduced by appropriately tailoring the fiber orientation angles in the laminae of the composite blade.
We have calculated and analyzed the electromagnetic responses of buried conductive pipes due to a horizontal magnetic dipole source on the pound using a three-dimensional (3-D) finite element method to provide useful guidelines for designing electromagnetic pipe locator and for field operation of the system. For single buried pipe, the horizontal component and the horizontal difference of the vertical component of magnetic field show peaks above the pipe. When comparing the width of response curves of both cases around the peak, horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field shows much narrower peak, 2 times narrower at a half of maximum amplitude, than that of horizontal component of magnetic field. Accordingly, we can pinpoint the horizontal location of pipe on the ground more accurately by measuring the horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic fold. Moreover, it will have a merit in determining the depth of pipe, because the equation for depth estimation is defined just above the pipe. When there are two buried pipes separated by two meters with each other, the response of horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field has two separate peaks each of which is located above the pipe whereas horizontal magnetic field response has only one peak above the pipe just below the transmitter. Thus, when there exist more than a buried pipe, measuring the horizontal difference of vertical magnetic field can effectively detect not only the pipe under transmitter but also adjacent ones. The width of response curves also indicates higher resolving ability of horizontal difference of vertical component of magnetic field.
