  • Named entity recognition is a process which extracts named entities in sentences and determines categories of the named entities. Previous studies on named entity recognition have primarily been used for supervised learning. For supervised learning, a large training corpus manually annotated with named entity categories is needed, and it is a time-consuming and labor-intensive job to manually construct a large training corpus. We propose a semi-supervised learning method to minimize the cost needed for training corpus construction and to rapidly enhance the performance of named entity recognition. The proposed method uses distance supervision for the construction of the initial training corpus. It can then effectively remove noise sentences in the initial training corpus through the use of an active bagging method, an ensemble method of bagging and active learning. In the experiments, the proposed method improved the F1-score of named entity recognition from 67.36% to 76.42% after active bagging for 15 times.

  • Potholes that occur on paved roads can have fatal consequences for vehicles traveling at high speeds and may even lead to fatalities. While manual detection of potholes using human labor is commonly used to prevent pothole-related accidents, it is economically and temporally inefficient due to the exposure of workers on the road and the difficulty in predicting potholes in certain categories. Therefore, completely preventing potholes is nearly impossible, and even preventing their formation is limited due to the influence of ground conditions closely related to road environments. Additionally, labeling work guided by experts is required for dataset construction. Thus, in this paper, we utilized the Mean Teacher technique, one of the semi-supervised learning-based knowledge distillation methods, to achieve robust performance in pothole image classification even with limited labeled data. We demonstrated this using performance metrics and GradCAM, showing that when using semi-supervised learning, 15 pre-trained CNN models achieved an average accuracy of 90.41%, with a minimum of 2% and a maximum of 9% performance difference compared to supervised learning.

  • Accurate segmentation of the kidney tumor is necessary to identify shape, location and safety margin of tumor in abdominal CT images for surgical planning before renal partial nephrectomy. However, kidney tumor segmentation is challenging task due to the various sizes and locations of the tumor for each patient and signal intensity similarity to surrounding organs such as intestine and spleen. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised learning-based mean teacher network that utilizes both labeled and unlabeled data using a kidney local guided map including kidney local information to segment small-sized kidney tumors occurring at various locations in the kidney, and analyze the performance according to the kidney tumor size. As a result of the study, the proposed method showed an F1-score of 75.24% by considering local information of the kidney using a kidney local guide map to locate the tumor existing around the kidney. In particular, under-segmentation of small-sized tumors which are difficult to segment was improved, and showed a 13.9%p higher F1-score even though it used a smaller amount of labeled data than nnU-Net.

  • Purpose To develop and validate a deep learning-based screening tool for the early diagnosis of scoliosis using chest radiographs with a semi-supervised generative adversarial network (GAN). Materials and Methods Using a semi-supervised learning framework with a GAN, a screening tool for diagnosing scoliosis was developed and validated through the chest PA radiographs of patients at two different tertiary hospitals. Our proposed method used training GAN with mild to severe scoliosis only in a semi-supervised manner, as an upstream task to learn scoliosis representations and a downstream task to perform simple classification for differentiating between normal and scoliosis states sensitively. Results The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, negative predictive value (NPV), positive predictive value, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.856, 0.950, 0.579, 0.985, and 0.285, respectively. Conclusion Our deep learning-based artificial intelligence software in a semi-supervised manner achieved excellent performance in diagnosing scoliosis using the chest PA radiographs of young individuals; thus, it could be used as a screening tool with high NPV and sensitivity and reduce the burden on radiologists for diagnosing scoliosis through health screening chest radiographs.

  • GPR data is used for underground exploration. The data gathered are interpreted by experts based on experience as the underground facilities often reflect GPR. In addition, GPR data are different in the noise and characteristics of the data depending on the equipment, environment, etc. This often results in insufficient data with accurate labels. Generally, a large amount of training data have to be obtained to apply CNN models that exhibit high performance in image classification problems. However, due to the characteristics of GPR data, it makes difficult to obtain sufficient data. Finally, this makes neural networks unable to learn based on general supervised learning methods. This paper proposes an image classification method considering data characteristics to ensure that the accuracy of each label is similar. The proposed method is based on semi-supervised learning, and the image is classified using clustering techniques after extracting the feature values of the image from the neural network. This method can be utilized not only when the amount of the labeled data is insufficient, but also when labels that depend on the data are not highly reliable.

  • Road surface damage detection is essential for a comfortable driving environment and the prevention of safety accidents. Road management institutes are using automated technology-based inspection equipment and systems. As one of these automation technologies, a sensor to detect road surface damage plays an important role. For this purpose, several studies on sensors using deep learning have been conducted in recent years. Road images and label images are needed to develop such deep learning algorithms. On the other hand, considerable time and labor will be needed to secure label images. In this paper, the adversarial learning method, one of the semi-supervised learning techniques, was proposed to solve this problem. For its implementation, a lightweight deep neural network model was trained using 5,327 road images and 1,327 label images. After experimenting with 400 road images, a model with a mean intersection over a union of 80.54% and an F1 score of 77.85% was developed. Through this, a technology that can improve recognition performance by adding only road images was developed to learning without label images and is expected to be used as a technology for road surface management in the future.

  • With miniaturization of semiconductor, the manufacturing process become more complex, and undetected small changes in the state of the equipment have unexpectedly changed the process results. Fault detection classification (FDC) system that conducts more active data analysis is feasible to achieve more precise manufacturing process control with advanced machine learning method. However, applying machine learning, especially in supervised learning criteria, requires an arduous data labeling process for the construction of machine learning data. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised learning to minimize the data labeling work for the data preprocessing. We employed equipment status variable identification (SVID) data and optical emission spectroscopy data (OES) in silicon etch with SF6/O2/Ar gas mixture, and the result shows as high as 95.2% of labeling accuracy with the suggested semi-supervised learning algorithm.

  • Intelligent tutoring system enables users to effectively learn by utilizing various artificial intelligence techniques. For instance, it can recommend a proper curriculum or learning method to individual users based on their learning history. To do this effectively, user's characteristics need to be analyzed and classified based on various aspects such as interest, learning ability, and personality. Even though data labeled by the characteristics are required for more accurate classification, it is not easy to acquire enough amount of labeled data due to the labeling cost. On the other hand, unlabeled data should not need labeling process to make a large number of unlabeled data be collected and utilized. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised learning method based on feedback variational auto-encoder(FVAE), which uses both labeled data and unlabeled data. FVAE is a variation of variational auto-encoder(VAE), where a multi-layer perceptron is added for giving feedback. Using unlabeled data, we train FVAE and fetch the encoder of FVAE. And then, we extract features from labeled data by using the encoder and train classifiers with the extracted features. In the experiments, we proved that FVAE-based semi-supervised learning was superior to VAE-based method in terms with accuracy and F1 score.

  • Video Object Segmentation (VOS) task requires an amount of labeled sequence data, which limits the performance of the current VOS methods trained with public datasets. In this paper, we propose two effective data augmentation schemes for VOS. The first augmentation method is to swap the background segment to the background from another image, and the other method is to play the sequence in reverse. The two augmentation schemes for VOS enable the current VOS methods to robustly predict the segmentation labels and improve the performance of VOS.

  • 3D human pose estimation models can be classified into a multi-view model and a single-view model. In general, the multi-view model shows superior pose estimation performance compared to the single-view model. In the case of the single-view model, the improvement of the 3D pose estimation performance requires a large amount of training data. However, it is not easy to obtain annotations for training 3D pose estimation models. To address this problem, we propose a method to generate pseudo ground-truths of multi-view human pose data from a multi-view model and exploit the resultant pseudo ground-truths to train a single-view model. In addition, we propose a multi-view consistency loss function that considers the consistency of poses estimated from multi-view images, showing that the proposed loss helps the effective training of single-view models. Experiments using Human3.6M and MPI-INF-3DHP datasets show that the proposed method is effective for training single-view 3D human pose estimation models.
