Dredging is inevitably necessary for the management of water infrastructure such as waterways and polluted bottom sediment. Dredged material management options may be offshore dumping, wetland creation, beach nourishment and various other engineering uses depending on the given circumstances at the time of dredging. Among those options, wetland creation and beach nourishment are the preferred ones in Korea considering significant loss of wetland and beach erosion due to various development projects along the coastal region. In order to use dredged material beneficially, however, dredged material needs to be assessed its suitability with respect to its engineering purpose and environmental criteria. In this paper, we demonstrate that environmental risk of dredged material to be introduced into the marine environment can be easily assessed using biomarkers with relative low cost. Biomarkers can also compliment pollutant contents analysis that may not be specific to their impact on biological response. Biomarker information may be used to assist decision making process in selecting suitable treatment or beneficial use options for dredged materials.
Since sediment in a stable state is disturbed during the process from sediment in a natural state to dredged soil, the turbidity of water is not good. When the dredged soil settles again, the volume change in the sediment occurs. Coagulant and flocculant are added for turbidity mitigation of the water and faster settling process of suspended solid, and the amount of the substances affects the characteristics of the dredged soil. This study is to investigate the characteristics of the dredged soil depending on the amount of three chemical products added to the wet dredged soil and the dry dredged soil through measuring the suspended solids (SS), volume change and sedimentation velocity. The experimental measurements show that the SS decreased, the volume change rate increased, and the sedimentation velocity increased, as the chemical amount increased. In addition, it was found that the dry dredged soil reacted even with little quantity of the chemicals because derelict and microorganism are removed due to the drying process at $100{\pm}5^{\circ}C$.

An amphibious scrubbing/suction dredging machine with cylindrical rotating brush, housing, and turbidity barrier was newly-developed to remove both sediments with about 10 cm thickness and periphyton attached on various structures in urban water-circulating systems through the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes. Based on the field application and long-term monitoring, the increase in both suspended solids (SS) and turbidity of water during the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes was negligible (p>0.05). In some cases, the turbidity of water initially increased, however, the turbidity was stabilized within 20 minutes from the start of dredging processes. The concentration changes in TN and TP of water were not statistically different (p>0.05) before and after the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes, indicating that benthic nutrients released from sediments were not significantly diffused, and were not supposed to cause significant water pollution. Also, water treatment facilities along with an amphibious scrubbing/suction dredging machine could be more effective since the removal of contaminant loadings through the scrubbing, suction, and dredging processes was much greater than that through simple coagulation/precipitation processes. Finally, GPS-based realtime tracking and operation program have been developed and applied in various urban water-circulating systems, and development of driver cooperative autonomous driving system is in progress to eliminate the need for manual driving of an amphibious scrubbing/suction dredging machine.
In this paper, model experiments in the laboratory were carried out to predict the effluent concentrations of suspended solid in containment of dumping dredged soils and test results were compared with results estimated by the currently used design method. Model tests of simulating dumping the dredged soils with a pump dredger in field were performed with changing the influent concentration and the length of containment and effluent concentration of suspended solid with time were measured during tests. As results of comparing test results about effluent concentration with those estimated from the design method by US Army COE(1987), they were confirmed to be in relatively good agreements.

There is a volume change between the sediments and the dredged materials because the dredged materials is fully disturbed by the dredger and settled in the basin from the stabilized condition. The volume of the dredged materials is also affected by the coagulants and flocculants (hereafter C & F) which was used to speed up the settling of the suspended solids. In this study, the volume change of the dredged materials is analysed in detail due to the injection amount of the C & F. The dredged materials were sampled in the lagoon located in the East coastal zone, and the volume change of the samples is quantitatively analysed by the laboratory test due to the change of the clay content and the amount of the C & F. The optimal amounts of the C & F is determined by showing the minimal volume change due to C & F injection. From the experimental results, the volume of the dredged materials is increased 1.68 times on an average and the volume change rate is slightly increased, i.e., negligible, as the clay content increase in the case of the C & F injection.
Most of the dredged sand generated from the sewage pipe maintenance project and the government's four-river project are disposed depending on abandonment and filling-up. This is caused by the lack of related recycling technology using dredged sand appropriately and high absorption rate and micro-particles of dredged sand producted from existing sand production system. Thus, this study carried out a quality assessment for the dredged sand produced through the optimum washing and sorting system supplementing problems of existing dredged sand production system as a part of research to examine performance of removing micro-particles and foreign substances. As a result of the assessment, the dredged sand produced through the cleaning and sorting system showed a wide quality improvement effect in absorption rate, 0.08 mm sieve pass amount, clay lump volume and organic impurity content, and it turned out to satisfy both the quality standards of this study, KS F 2573(recycled aggregate for concrete) and KS F 2526(aggregate for concrete) so it could be confirmed that it would be able to be used as an aggregate for concrete in the future.

In order to predict the long-term effects of pollutants in sediment on the water quality and the improvement of water quality according to dredging operation, models applied to decide the location and the propriety of dredging were developed. At first, the area was divided into several segments and the developed model was applied to simulate the behaviors of contaminants in an aquatic environment by using estimated parameters. And then through the sensitivity analysis between parameters, the optimum values were determined. The long-term modelling in the area A forecasted that PCBs concentration in the hot spot was decreased from $3.1\;{\mu}g/L$ to $2.4\;{\mu}g/L$ in 30 years. Contaminants in sediment as a source of water pollution did not reduce remarkably in the long run. Therefore it is difficult to expect the improvement of water qualities without the fundamental isolation of contaminants from sediment. It is considered that the selective dredging in the spot improves the water quality consequently.
Dredging and disposal is a conventional method to remove contaminated sediments. However, there are some problems in dredging and disposal, such as disturbance of contaminated sediments, disposal site determination, and high construction cost. Recently, in-situ capping which overcomes the problems of dredging and disposal is widely applied to isolate local contaminated sites. Numerical studies, which have been conducted to simulate contaminant transport during in-situ capping, have been concerned mainly with diffusive transport. However, contaminated sediments experience large strain consolidation induced by self-weight because of initially high moisture content of sediments, and contaminant transport results from advection and diffusion. Previous studies focus on contaminant transport during consolidation, but have neglected consolidation effect on long-term contaminant transport in sediments. This study presents numerical simulation results of consolidation effect on long-term contaminant transport in sediments.
