In this paper, a procedure is presented to optimize ship propulsion systems considering the hull- propeller-engine interactions. The propeller diameter and expanded blade ratio are systematically varied to find out the optimum combinations of RPM and BHP at a given design speed by considering cavitation criteria, and then by comparing the fuel oil consumptions of each main engine candidates which can produce each combination of RPM and BHP, appropriate main engine with the lowest fuel oil consumption together with principal characteristics of the optimum propeller are selected.
The Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) introduced by the Marine Environment P rotection Committee(MEPC) in International Maritime Organization(IMO) has significantly assisted in regulating CO2 emissions. However, in adverse weather conditions, it can lead to accidents due to slow steaming of vessels and low engine propulsion power. In response to this issue, the MEPC presented guidelines for the minimum propulsion power of the main engine for maintaining the course of vessels in adverse weather conditions. However, the guidelines are only applicable for vessels with a deadweight of 20,000 tons, leaving out small and medium ships. This study evaluated vessels subject to the guidelines of minimum propulsion power and proposed revised guidelines. In addition, relevant cases of marine accidents were investigated with the aim of investigating the minimum propulsion power of main engine for medium and small ships not covered by the guidelines. In order to achieve this, engine propulsion power was analyzed according to the size of the affected vessels. The results obtained from this study could be used as a minimum power criterion that can be considered for ship building to reduce marine accidents in adverse weather for small and medium ships.

Transverse vibrations of a ship's aft end and deckhouse are mainly induced by transverse exciting forces from the main engine. Resonance should be avoided in the initial design stages when there is a prediction of resonance between the main engine and transverse modes of the deckhouse. Estimates of frequencies for resonance avoidance are possible from the specifications of the main engine and propeller, but the inherent vibration frequency of the structure around the engine room is not easy to estimate due to the variation in the shape. Experience-oriented vibration design is also carried out, which results in many problems, such as process delay, over-injection of on-site personnel, and iterative performance of the design. For the flexible design of 8,600 TEU container vessels, this study addressed the resonance problem caused by the transverse vibration of the main engine when only the main engine was changed from 12 cylinders to 10 cylinders without modification of the hull structure layout. Efficient structural reinforcement design guidelines are presented for avoiding resonances with the main engine lateral vibration and the structure around the engine room. The guidelines are expected to be used as practical design guidelines at design sites.

A mechanical actuator to generate adjustable force ants its active control algorithm to minimize ship structural vibration are developed. The algorithms comprise initial algorithm which determines optimal phase and force magnitude of the actuator using the variation of vibration response according to the phase difference between the main engine and the actuator, and regulating algorithm which performs continuous optimal control to track the change of the engine speed. This control system can be applied without any prior identification for the dynamic characteristics of the controlled structure. In the control experiments for the deckhouse structural vibration of a 300,000 DWT crude oil carrier and a 2,270 TEU container carrier, the developed system showed good performance to reduce the vibration levels to $1/2{\sim}1/6$ of the uncontrolled levels.

The need for education and training on engine-part maintenance is rising in order to prevent marine accidents occurring due to a surge in engine-part damages. However, practical training using actual equipment is difficult due to the size and location of the equipment. Therefore, the necessity of developing a training system for marine engines using virtual reality (VR) is intensifying. The purpose of this paper is to develop an optimized system for marine engine education and training using existing VR programs and equipment. To this end, we selected and modeled the marine engine and education target suitable for the class, and developed the system using VR development software. The developed VR education and training system is designed to experience content that is otherwise difficult to train or practice in the curriculum through virtual reality. In fact, fourth grade students from Maritime University were taught using marine engine VR educational equipment, and it confirmed that there was an educational effect on the class. In the future, the introduction of an education and training system using VR in the field of marine engines can improve their maintenance and repairing capacity, and aid in reducing marine accidents.need for education and training on engine part maintenance is increasing to prevent marine accidents.
