Use of concrete has undoubtedly become widespread in construction. Sensors are used to add functional characteristics to concrete. Self-diagnosing, smart concrete is also being developed. Development of these functional materials and structures will play an important role in protecting buildings and structures against external factors brought about by unusual weather among others. In this study, the innovative measurement system is presented where material damages and internal stress can simply be detected against the compressive and bending force of the structure using light-emitting diode and the resistance property of electric fuse.
Paleostress was interpreted by analyzing the healed microcracks and the secondary fluid inclusions in quartz of the Jurassic granites distributed in the southwestern Ogcheon Folded Belt, South Korea. The most dominant direction of healed microcracks in the study area was oriented $N30^{\circ}W$, and $N70^{\circ}W$ direction was also recognized. The formation temperatures of fluid inclusions were ranged $380-550^{\circ}C$ and the age of healed microcrack formations might have been approximately 166-200 Ma. Comparing the paleostress orientation obtained from the direction of healed microcracks to the formation age of healed microcracks estimated from the secondary fluid inclusions, it is considered that granitic rock body in study area was subject to a maximum horizontal principal stress along the NNW-SSE and WNW-ESE directions in the early Jurassic to middle Jurassic.

The fatigue crack growth model is derived and the retardation model is proposed. The fatigue crack growth model considers the residual plastic stretch on the crack surface which results from the plastic deformation at the tip of fatigue crack. The fatigue crack growth rate is calculated by using the cumulative fatigue damage and plastic strain energy in the material elements at the crack tip. This model gives the crack growth rate in reasonable agreement with test data for aluminum alloy AL6061-T651 and 17-4PH casting steel. The fatigue crack growth retardation model is based on the residual plastic stretch produced from a tensile overload which reduced the plastic strain range of the following load cycles. A strip-yield model of a crack tip plasticity is used for the calculation of a plastic zone size. The proposed retardation model characterized the observed features and delayed retardation of the fatigue crack growth under tensile overload.
In this paper, fatigue tests were carried out at stress test levels of 461 MPa, 441 MPa, and 431 MPa by using smooth specimen of$2_{1/4}$ Cr-1 Mo steel with the stress ratio(R) of 0.05. The initiation, growth and coalescense process of the major cracks and sub-cracks among the fatigue cracks on the smooth specimen are investigated and measured under each stress level at a constant cycle ratio by the replica technique with optical microscope. Some of the important results are as follows: In spite of the difference of stress levels, the major crack data gather into a small band in the curve of surface crack length and crack depth against cycle ratio N/Nf. The sub-crack data, however, deviate from the band of the major crack. The growth rates, da/dN, of major and sub-crack plotted against the stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K$, have the tendency to be compressed on a relatively small band. But it is more effective to predict fatigue life through major cracks. The propagation behavior of surface microcracks on the smooth specimens coincides with that of the specimen having an artificial small surface defect or through crack.
Rock fracturing technique through fluid injection into the wellbore has been widely used to extract geothermal heat and to enhance oil and gas production. Single fracture formation is ideal for the production. However, it is very difficult to form single fracture formation. Instead, the formation of segmented fracture is a common phenomenon. Therefore, design parameters are expected to be different from those of single fracture because of mechanical interaction between segmented fractures. In this paper, design parameters such as length, aperture, and net pressure are evaluated by using model of segmented fracture in which numerical technique is incorporated to consider mechanical interaction between segments. Results show that the existence of fracture segmentation affects design parameters in fracturing treatment in rock by fluid injection.

The experimental and numerical investigations on the failure characteristics of the secondary bonded composite single-lap joints were performed. The initiations and growths of cracks were observed using CCD camera and acoustic emission sensor during the tension tests of the joint specimens. The structural behaviors of the specimens were predicted by the geometric nonlinear two-dimensional finite element analysis. The three types of observed initial cracks were included in each finite element models and the strain energy release rates of each specimen models were calculated by VCCT(Virtual Crack Closure Technique) technique. The tension tests showed that the initial cracks occurred in the 60∼90% of final failure loads and the major failure modes of the specimens were adhesive failure and the delamination between the 1st and 2nd ply of laminate. The specimens with the thicker bondline had earlier crack initiation loads but higher crack propagation resistance and eventually better loading capability. The delaminations were mostly observed in the thicker bondline specimens. The mode I values of calculated strain energy release rates were higher than the mode II values in the all specimen models considering the three types of initial cracks. The mode I and total strain energy release rates were calculated as higher values in the order of initial crack in the edge interface, comer interface and delamination between the plies of laminate.

Various methods have been used to reinforce the cementitious material such as mortar and concrete that have weak tensile strength. Major reinforcing method is to mix matrix with fibers which have strong tensile strength. Recently, micro-fiber reinforced mortar has been studied which removes coarse aggregate and uses micro-fiber with small diameter in order to homogenize the matrix properties and maximize the performance of fiber. Performance of micro-fiber reinforced mortar showing multiple cracking behavior is hardly represented only by the flexural toughness. Therefore, This paper reports the cracking behavior as well as mechanical behavior for various mixtures which have different fiber type and mixture proportions to find the proper parameter representing the cracking characteristic. Correlations between flexural toughness and various cracking characteristics such as cracking area, width and number are explored. As a result, it is found that flexural toughness, volume of fiber and number of cracks are suitable for representing the characteristics of micro-fiber reinforced mortar.
