  • The valley forests at Songgyesa-Motbong-Wolhatan Area in Deogyusan National Park were studied to investigate forest structure in relation to aspect and altitude of the slope. Density, mean DBH, mean height and basal area of the tree and subtree layers in the north-facing slope were greater than those in the south-facing slope. The impotance percentage of Fraxinus mandshurica and Carpinus cordata increased with increasing elevation while those of Quercus serrata and Quercus aliena decreased. Species diversity of the north-facing slope was 1.362 and that of the south-facing slope was 1.242. There was a tendency that number of species and species diversity decreased with increasing elevation. The result of cluster analysis for the tree and sub-tree layer indicated that the studied forests were classified into broad-leaved tree species community at the low and middle elevation belts of the south-facing slope and the north-facing slope, Fraxinus mandshurica-Quercus mongolica community at the high elevation belts of the south-facing slope and the north-facing slope and Quercus mongolica community at the top area. There were significantly positive correlations in the importance percentages among Quercus serrata, Betuzo davurica and Tilia amurensis. Carpinus laxiflora was significantly correlated with Cornus controversa, Tilia amurensis and Lindera obtusiloba. There was significantly negative correlation between Fraxinus mandshurica and Pinus densiflora.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the user's effects on the avifauna in Kaya Mountain National Park. The survey was carried over 3 districts which were divided with main trail(valley), subtrail(valley), unused trail(ridge) by line transect method from April to October 1989. The observed birds were 29 species and 527 individuals. these consist of 20 species for residents, 7 species for summer visitor 1 species for winter visitor, 1 species for passage migrant. The average density of birds was 2.44 ea/ha, and main dominant species were Parus major minor, Garrulus gtandarius brandtii, Parus palustris hellmayri, Parus varius and Sitta europaea amurenis in order. The observed frequency of wild birds was 8.42 times/km in average. No. of species, no. of individuals, density, species diversity and observed frequency of summer were lower than spring in 3 survey routes. Therefore, from now, in Kaya Mountain National Park management, the enjoyment oriented activities will be regulated and control of trail use on main trail are necessary during breeding periods for wild birds protection, especially in summer. To investigate the use or not of artificial nests, 35 artificial nests were selected. The results of this survey showed that many wild birds prefered mixed nest in column shaped to wooden nests. The rightful installation and manegement for invitation and increase of wild birds was necessary.

  • A valley forest in Sangbuun area at Jirisan National Park was studied to investigate forest structure in relation to altitude and part of the slope. Forty-eight quadrats were set up in the valley forest along altitude of 726m to 1,090m and part of the slope, and vegetation analysis for the woody species in the tree and subtree layers were carried out. With increasing elevation belt, mean DBH, height and basal area of the trees in the tree layer increased while their density decreased. This trends may be caused by the disturbance which was relatively severe in the low elevation area. As elevation increased, the importance percentages of Fraxinus rhynchophylla, Quercus variabilis and Quercus mongolica increased while those of Styyax japonicus, Carpinus laxiflora and Pinus densiflora decreased. The importance percentages of Quercus variabilis and Pinus densiflora increased as going from lower part to upper part of the slope. However, the opposite trend was found for the importance percentages of Acer mono and Corlus heterophylla var. thunbergii. Number of species and species diversity decreased as increasing elevation and going from lower part to upper part of the slope. According to importance percentage and cluster analysis, the valley forest was classified into three forest communities of Quercus serrata-broad-leaved tree species community in lower part of the slope at low elevation belt, middle elevation belt and middle and upper parts of the slope at high elevation belt, Pinus dnsiflora-Quercus serrata community in middle and upper parts at low elevation belt, and Quercus mongolica-broad-leaved tree species community in lower part of the slope at high elevation belt and top area.

  • This study was performed in order to analyze influences the actual vegetation between the communities of Pinus densiflora and Quercus mongolica in southern Korea to the species composition of the seed bank in the top soil. The soil samples were collected from the studied plots and transported to the Experimental Glasshouse at Department of Landscape Architecture, Yeungnam University and examined the germinated species individual numbers with species composition and germinated individual numbers by species. The overall germination status was the highest in the herbaceous layers than the layers of tree, sub-tree and shrub, respectively. There were no significantly different between numbers of species and individuals and between actual vegetation and seed bank in the two communities. The woody species marked in the seed bank as a pioneer or edge species than in the two communities which are in the stage of mid or late successional species. Although the plant species in the herbaceous layers was highly influenced to the species composition of the seed bank, but no significantly different was showed within the same forest zone and latitudes of Korean peninsula. As the pioneer or edge species of the actual vegetation possibly will be higher the buried in the top soil layer and this phenomenon will influence overall species composition in the seed bank population.

  • This study was presented to effect of prescribed burning to the avian fauna and was conducted from March to October 2007 in Sihwa grassland, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Prescribed burning was conducted at Sihwa grassland of Songjeong-ri Mado-myeon, Hwaseong city from 28th February to 1 st March 2007. Thirty birds species were observed and sum of the maximum count was 181 individuals at the prescribed burning area for all survey time. Observed species was 24 species and sum of the maximum count was 154 individuals on the unburned area. Number of species and sum of the maximum count at the prescribed burning area was greater than unburned area. There is no differences in the dominant species between prescribed and unburned area. Average number of species, number of individuals, species diversity and species richness of the prescribed burning area were greater than unburned area in early stage (from March to June) after prescribed burning. Community indices in burned area during early season were different with unburned area by prediscribed burning. However, the indices had became similar between burned and unburned area as time goes by. Disturbance by prescribed burning created new habitat and feeding site temporarily for the avian species in grassland. We would suggest that prescribed burning is most effective method to maintain grassland ecosystem from the invading bush or tree and periodical prescribed burning is a good method to preserve and manage the grassland ecosystem.

  • Differences in characteristics of flora and environmental factors of geomorphology, hydrology, water quality and soil were investigated in the shoreline of total 35 reservoirs according to their usages of waterpower generation, agricultural water supply, residential and industrial water supply and flood control in Korea. The number of plant species, floral structure and characteristics of species traits in the shoreline of reservoirs were different according to their usage. From the results of stepwise regression analysis, the total number of vascular plant species was increased at the environment of the higher flood frequency at the median water level and the longer exposure duration of the shoreline. The results of principal coordinates analysis and cluster analysis showed that the shoreline flora was classified as the 3 types of 1) flood control and residential and industrial water supply, 2) agricultural water supply and 3) waterpower generation reservoirs. The water level fluctuation, flood frequency at the median water level, lake water quality index and exposure duration of the shoreline were selected as important environmental factors affected on the characteristics of shoreline flora. The species richness of total flora and hydrophytes, especially submerged macrophytes, were much higher in the reservoirs for the purpose of the waterpower generation in which mesotrophic water quality and stable water levels were maintained. Annual or biennial ruderals were established on the ephemeral drawdown zone of flood control, residential and industrial water supply reservoirs which have oligotrophic or mesotrophic water quality and wide range of water level fluctuation. The floating hydrophytes were differentially dominated in the littoral zones of the agricultural water supply reservoirs with a mesotrophic or eutrophic water quality and a medium water level fluctuation. In conclusion environmental factors related to water level fluctuation and water quality were different and then the floral characteristics of shoreline were distinguishable according to usage of Korean reservoirs.

  • Korean Plecopteran research was started in 1921, and it has advanced greatly during last 20 years. Among families the family Nemouridae and Chloroperlidae are composed of plentiful species. Since North Korean Plecopteran research was begun in 1938, it made good progress by foreigners not North Korean in the 1970's. Subsequently a few species has been added up recently, and among families the family Perlidae and Nemouridae contain most abundant species. Totally Korean Plecoptera consists of 43 species in 25 genera in 10 families, and North Korean 37 species in 26 genera in 10 families. Among them 13 species are common in both. And Korean names of Plecopteran species were mixed in Hangeul-type and Chinese-type, on the other hand in North Korean names there were some cases of Hangeul-type, but most of species have no Korean names. In Korea, particularly Ministry of Environment designated and controlled domestic biological resources as Korean Species that Require Approval when shipping abroad and Korean endemic species, which include 9 species and 11 species in Plecoptera respectively. Finally two genera and four species gained new Korean names as follows: genus Megaleuctra (Keun-Kkoma-Gang-Do-Rae-Sok), genus Haploperla (Han-Nok-Saek-Gang-Do-Rae-Sok), Nemoura brevicercia (Min-Gang-Do-Rae), Nemoura espera (Kkot-Min-Gang-Do-Rae), Amphinemura baei (Je-Ju-A-Ga-Mi-Min-GangDo-Rae) and Amphinemura rai (A-Ga-Mi-Min-Gang-Do-Rae).

  • The dynamics of phytoplankton communities were investigated for Upo wetland from march 2005 to December 2007 on monthly basis. During the investigation, totally 213 phytoplankton taxa which belonged to 86 genera of 35 families in 8 classes were observed. Chlorophyceae was the most diverse in the Upo wetland. Number of phytoplankton taxa was in the range 14${\sim}$50 for monthly investigation and the average number of taxa was 34${\pm}$10. Phytoplankton standing crops were the lowest value of 161 cells $mL^{-1}$ in August 2005 and the highest with 159,283 cells $mL^{-1}$ in August 2006. Especially during summer season in 2006, phytoplankton standing crops showed the highest value due to the waterbloom occurred by cyanobacteria. The number of the dominant taxa of Upo wetland were 13 and among them chlorophyceae and cyanophyceae dominated 8 times. In the view of seasonal changes of phytoplankton community, Upo wetland had high portion of cryptophyceae, dinophyceae and bacillariophyceae in the winter season and chlorophyceae and bacillariophyceae in the other season. However, in the summer season of 2006, cyanobacteria showed the highest portion. The diversity indices had range from 0.50 to 2.86 and showed the tendency of gradual decrease in each year.
