  • Medical ultrasonic imaging is a useful imaging facility known to be most safe and easy. It enables physicians to observe the inside structures of the bodies, blood flow, and motions of internal organs. Some physical properties of biologic tissues can also be estimated from backscattered sounds. However, the ultrasonic pulses interrogating the living organisms leave their footprints in the returning signals during imaging. Some significant details are buried in the footprints and their overlaps from adjacent particles. These distortions also decrease the quality of the images. Many research efforts have been made to enhance the image quality and to recover the acoustic information in various ways. In this study, a new interrogation method based on the wavelet and subband filter bank is proposed. It adopts the subband wavelet filters satisfying the perfect-reconstruction (PR) conditions as the interrogating pulses to restore the details useful in tissue characterization and to enhance the image quality. The proposed method was applied to two types of simulations of ultrasonic imaging. The results showed its ability to restore the detailsin the simulated interrogation of biologic tissues, and verified the improved image quality in the simulated imaging of general ultrasonic phantom compared with the conventional method.

  • In this paper, a new method for the mixed image separation is presented using the independent component analysis, the innovation process, and the expectation-maximization. In general, the independent component analysis (ICA) is one of the widely used statistical signal processing schemes, which represents the information from observations as a set of random variables in the from of linear combinations of another statistically independent component variables. In various useful applications, ICA provides a more meaningful representation of the data than the principal component analysis through the transformation of the data to be quasi-orthogonal to each other. which can be utilized in linear projection.. However, it has been known that ICA does not establish good performance in source separation by itself. Thus, in order to overcome this limitation, there have been many techniques that are designed to reinforce the good properties of ICA, which improves the mixed image separation. Unfortunately, the innovation process still needs to be studied since it yields inconsistent innovation process that is attached to the ICA, the expectation and maximization process is added. The results presented in this paper show that the proposed improves the image separation as presented in experiments.

  • In the context of a dynamic trading environment, the ultimate goal of the financial forecasting system is to optimize a specific trading objective. This paper proposes a two-phase (extraction and filtering) stock trading system that aims at maximizing the rates of returns. Extraction of stocks is performed by searching specific time-series patterns described by a combination of values of technical indicators. In the filtering phase, several rules are applied to the extracted sets of stocks to select stocks to be actually traded. The filtering rules are automatically induced from past data. From a large database of daily stock prices, the values of technical indicators are calculated. They are used to make the extraction patterns, and the distributions of the discretization intervals of the values are calculated for both positive and negative data sets. We assumed that the values in the intervals of distinctive distribution may contribute to the prediction of future trend of stocks, so the rules for filtering stocks are automatically induced from the data in those intervals. We show the rates of returns when using our trading system outperform the market average. These results mean rule induction method using distributional differences is useful.

  • This study aimed to develop a Korean emotion vocabulary list that functions as an important tool in understanding human feelings. In doing so, the focus was on the careful extraction of most widely used feeling words, as well as categorization into groups of emotion(s) in relation to its meaning when used in real life. A total of 12 professionals (including Korean major graduate students) partook in the study. Using the Korean 'word frequency list' developed by Yonsei University and through various sorting processes, the study condensed the original 64,666 emotion words into a finalized 504 words. In the next step, a total of 80 social work students evaluated and classified each word for its meaning and into any of the following categories that seem most appropriate for inclusion: 'happiness', 'sadness', 'fear', 'anger', 'disgust', 'surprise', 'interest', 'boredom', 'pain', 'neutral', and 'other'. Findings showed that, of the 504 feeling words, 426 words expressed a single emotion, whereas 72 words reflected two emotions (i.e., same word indicating two distinct emotions), and 6 words showing three emotions. Of the 426 words that represent a single emotion, 'sadness' was predominant, followed by 'anger' and 'happiness'. Amongst 72 words that showed two emotions were mostly a combination of 'anger' and 'disgust', followed by 'sadness' and 'fear', and 'happiness' and 'interest'. The significance of the study is on the development of a most adaptive list of Korean feeling words that can be meticulously combined with other emotion signals such as facial expression in optimizing emotion recognition research, particularly in the Human-Computer Interface (HCI) area. The identification of feeling words that connote more than one emotion is also noteworthy.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify human physiological responses to emotional lighting system using LED (light emitting diode) flat lighting. Subjects were ten males in their twenties without medical history to eyes. Colors of LED lighting are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and colorless (white). They were stimulated by LED lighting for 5 minutes. We measured body temperature, heart rate variability (HRV) and electroencephalogram (EEG) before and after color stimulus. In case of EEG analysis, relative power ${\alpha}$ wave ratio decreased in the groups of colorless, red and orange color light. Also, sympathetic nerve was more activated than parasympathetic nerve and the body temperature was increased in the groups of colorless, red, orange, yellow color light. On the other hand, relative power ${\alpha}$ wave ratio increased and parasympathetic nerve was more activated than sympathetic nerve and the body temperature was decreased in the groups of green, blue and purple color light. The results imply that the LED color lighting system in the realistic experiment environment. In the future, studies with compounded both colors and modes according to situation or auditory as nature sound or olfactory as aroma will be required.

  • As the SoC designs complexity constantly increases, the simulation that uses their software models simply takes too much time. To solve this problem, FPGA-based logic emulators have been developed and commonly used in the industry. However, FPGA-based logic emulators are facing with the problems of which not only very low FPGA resource usage rate due to the very limited number of pins in FPGAs, but also the emulation speed getting slow drastically as the complexity of designs increases. In this paper, we proposed a new innovative emulation architecture and its software that has high FPGA resource usage rate and makes the emulation extremely fast. The proposed emulation system has merits to overcome the FPGA pin limitation by pipelined ring which transfers multiple logic signal through a single physical pin, and it also makes possible to use a high speed system clock through the intelligent ring topology. In this topology, not only all signal transfer channels among EPGAs are totally separated from user logic so that a high speed system clock can be used, but also the depth of combinational paths is kept swallow as much as possible. Both of these are contributed to achieve high speed emulation. For pipelined singnals transfer among FPGAs we adopt a few heuristic scheduling having low computation complexity. Experimental result with a 12 bit microcontroller has shown that high speed emulation possible even with these simple heuristic scheduling algorithms.

  • A distributed constraint satisfaction problem (distributed CSP) is a constraint satisfaction problem(CSP) in which variables and constraints are distributed among multiple automated agents. ACSP is a problem to find a consistent assignment of values to variables. Even though the definition of a CSP is very simple, a surprisingly wide variety of AI problems can be formalized as CSPs. Similarly, various application problems in DAI (Distributed AI) that are concerned with finding a consistent combination of agent actions can be formalized as distributed CAPs. In recent years, many new backtracking algorithms for solving distributed CSPs have been proposed. But most of all, they have common drawbacks that the algorithm assumes the priority of agents is static. In this thesis, we establish a basic algorithm for solving distributed CSPs called dynamic priority search algorithm that is more efficient than common backtracking algorithms in which the priority order is static. In this algorithm, agents act asynchronously and concurrently based on their local knowledge without any global control, and have a flexible organization, in which the hierarchical order is changed dynamically, while the completeness of the algorithm is guaranteed. And we showed that the dynamic priority search algorithm can solve various problems, such as the distributed 200-queens problem, the distributed graph-coloring problem that common backtracking algorithm fails to solve within a reasonable amount of time. The experimental results on example problems show that this algorithm is by far more efficient than the backtracking algorithm, in which the priority order is static. The priority order represents a hierarchy of agent authority, i.e., the priority of decision-making. Therefore, these results imply that a flexible agent organization, in which the hierarchical order is changed dynamically, actually performs better than an organization in which the hierarchical order is static and rigid. Furthermore, we describe that the agent can be available to hold multiple variables in the searching scheme.

  • Any significant inflow of fresh water due to flood or snow melting can rapidly reduce salinity at the bay. In such a case, the habitat environment in the sea near river mouth can be partly destroyed. Therefore, research to understand the salinity distribution quantitatively at the bay for the utilization of natural environment and for the inhabitant conservation must be very important. In this study, the investigation on the relationship between satellite image and turbidity is carried out first, and then the salinity distribution at the bay using the relationship between turbidity and salinity is derived. The main results are as follows. First the reappearance ability of RGB bands respectively of the satellite image is investigated, and then it was confirmed that the combination of band2 and band3 expressed best the movement characteristics of turbid water at the bay is chopped up into 4 small areas. Second the turbidity of river mouth is estimated using the travel time from the upward monitoring station to the river mouth. Finally the satellite image is converted into the salinity distribution by the correlation of salinity and turbidity. It is confirmed that the salinity distributions obtained from above three investigation methods are quite reasonable and clear.

  • In this study, methodology to determine optimal location of washlands based on economic analysis is presented. Install costs of washlands are calculated by construction cost and land compensatory cost and benefits of washlands are calculated from flood damage reduction and befit from using washland as wetland. Indirect approach for runoff-flood damage relationship is suggested and benefit-cost analysis is used for economic analysis. Economic analysis is added to existing models that used only flood reduction effect to determine optimal location of washlands. Suggested methodology is applied to 13 potential washlands in Anseong River basin to examine its applicability. Applied result of new methodology is compared with that of existing model. As the application results, it is possible to determine the optimal combinations of washlands can provide more economic benefit compared to existing studies. It is determined that considering economic analysis can be better option for decision making problem searching for optimal location of washlands.

  • A robust parameter set (ROPS) selection framework for an unsteady flow model was developed by combining Pareto optimums obtained by outcomes of model calibration using multi-site observations with the minimax regret approach (MRA). The multi-site calibration problem which is a multi-objective problem was solved by using an aggregation approach which aggregates the weighted criteria related to different sites into one measure, and then performs a large number of individual optimization runs with different weight combinations to obtain Pareto solutions. Roughness parameter structure which can describe the variation of Manning's n with discharges and sub-reaches was proposed and the related coefficients were optimized as model parameters. By applying the MRA which is a decision criterion, the Pareto solutions were ranked based on the obtained regrets related to each Pareto solution, and the top-rated one due to the lowest aggregated regrets of both calibration and validation was determined as the only ROPS. It was found that the determination of variable roughness and the corresponding standardized RMSEs at the two gauging stations varies considerably depending on the combinations of weights on the two sites. This method can provide the robust parameter set for the multi-site calibration problems in hydrologic and hydraulic models.
