An Analysis on the San-Sul-Kwa Textbook under the Rule of Japanese Imperialism(1909~1945) (일제강점기 산술과 분석)

  • The aims of the study were to analyze the San-Sul-Kwa textbook under the rule of Japanese Imperialism(1909~1945). It was analyzed that the contents of San-Sul-Kwa were selected for the purpose of national interests of Japanese as a ruling country through four times of amendment of education and many kinds of drill and practice in terms of number and operations were emphasized toward entire grades. However, some parts of textbook over the period seem to have had significant affects on mathematics education of Korea since the period.

Triangles in Chosun Mathematics (조선 산학의 삼각형)

  • This study investigates a mathematical subject, 'triangles' in mathematics books of Chosun Dynasty, in special Muk Sa Jib San Bub(默思集算法), Gu Il Jib(九一集), San Hak Ib Mun(算學入門), Ju Hae Su Yong(籌解需用), and San Sul Gwan Gyun(算術管見). It is likely that they apt to avoid manipulating general triangles except the right triangles and the isosceles triangles etc. Our investigation says that the progress of triangle-related contents in Chosun mathematics can fall into three stages: measurement of the triangle-shaped fields, transition from the object of measurement to the object of geometrical study, and examination of definition, properties and validation influenced by western mathematics.

중국 및 조선시대 산학서에 나타난 원주율과 원의 넓이에 대한 고찰

  • This paper aims to investigate how Chinese and Korean evaluate $\pi$ and measure tile area of circle by reviewing the problems in the old mathematical books. The books are Gu-Jang-San-Sul(The nine chapters on tile mathematical art) for China and Gu-Il-Jib for Chosun Dynasty. The result shows that our ancestors used the different values of ${\pi}$ in relation to the accuracy and the various methods for measuring the area of circle.

  • HPM(History and Pedagogy of Mathematics) become an important issue to us now. Study on old Korean mathematics books were made recently. We study mathematics books in Kyujanggak in this article. Horng Wann-Sheng 洪萬生, an math. historian and a member of editorial board of Historia Mathematica, visited Kyujanggak, the royal library of Joseon Dynasty. After his visit, he published a paper, "The first visit to mathematics books in Kyujanggak 奎章閣收藏算書初訪"(2008 Kyujanggak 32, p. 283-293). In his paper, he also raised several research problems on the history of Korean mathematics. In this paper, we analyze his paper "The first visit to mathematics books in Kyujanggak" and give some answers to those raised problems on Korean mathematics. Also we correct some misunderstanding of Horng on some facts. Especially, we make it clear that the author of SinJungSanSul(New Arithmetics 新訂算術) was not Lee Sang-Seol(李相卨), whom Horng considered as the author, but Lee Gyo-Seung(李敎承) through the correct translation of its preface and an article about its copyright lawsuit. And we added some pathways how Chinese mathematics books were imported by Joseon. We introduce the case of Hong Dae-Yong(洪大容) in detail.

Educational policy and curriculums of Korean school mathematics in the late 19th and early 20th century (식민지 수학교육 정책과 19세기 말과 20세기 전반 한국수학 교육과정 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine obstacles to progress for 20th century Korean mathematics. In 1945, shortly after Korea was liberated from Japan, there were no Korean mathematics Ph.D. holders, less than ten bachelor degree holders, and only one person with a master's degree in mathematics. We investigate the reasons for this. Korea has to overcome such an unforgiving condition and rebuild quality education programs in higher mathematics over the last several decades. These debilitating circumstances in higher mathematics were considerable obstacles in developing a higher level of mathematical research for the mainstream of 20th century world mathematics. We study policy and curriculums of Korean school mathematics in the late 19th and early 20th century, with some educational and socio-political background.

Diversity of Problem Solving Methods about a Problem of Area from the History of Mathematics by High Achieving Elementary School Students (수학사의 한 넓이 문제에 대한 초등 수학 우수아의 풀이 다양성 탐색)

  • This study investigates how high achievers solve a given mathematical problem. The problem, which comes from 'SanHakIbMun', a Korean mathematics book from eighteenth century, is not used in regular courses of study. It requires students to determine the area of a gnomon given four dimensions(4,14,4,22). The subjects are 84 sixth grade elementary school students who, at the recommendation of his/her school principal, participated in the mathematics competition held by J university. The methods used by these students can be classified into two approaches: numerical and decomposing-reconstructing, which are subdivided into three and six methods respectively. Of special note are a method which assumes algebraic feature, and some methods which appear in the history of eastern mathematics. Based on the result, we may observe a great variance in methods used, despite the fact that nearly half of the subject group used the numerical approach.

  • The administrative service in Chosun Dynasty relating to mathematics was carried out by the middle class(中人) mathematicians selected by the official selection examination(取才). They belong to HoJo(戶曹) department and their ranks are GyeSa(計士), ByulJe(別提), HunDo(訓導 = mathematics teacher), and GyoSu(敎授 = mathematics professor). We call them SanWon(算員). HunDo and GyoSu played very important role although their ranks are low, for they educate SanWon and manage the official selection examination. Using JuHakSeonSaengAn(籌學先生案, List of mathematics teachers) and JuHakIpGyukAn(籌學入格案, List of successful candidates in the official selection examination for mathematics), we investigate HunDo and GyoSu in Chosun Dynasty.

A Comparative Study of Contents between Ju-Seo-Gwan-Gyeon and Gu-Jang-San-Sul (「주서관견(籌書管見)」과 「구장산술(九章算術)」의 내용 비교)

  • Ju-Seo-Gwan-Gyeon is a mathematical book of Chosun dynasty in the early 18th century. This study is to analyze and compare the contents between Ju-Seo-Gwan-Gyeon and Gu-Jang-San-Sul. From this study, we are able to see the contents of Ju-Seo-Gwan-Gyeon that has been unknown in detail so far. In this comparative study, the following facts are found. First, many problems in Ju-Seo-Gwan-Gyeon are similar to the Gu-Jang-San-Sul on the contents and frame. Most of them are same type. But some of problems in Ju-Seo-Gwan-Gyeon have been developed. Second, there are distinct differences of description type. And Ju-Seo-Gwan-Gyeon was influenced by Gu-Jang-San-Sul but also other mathematical books. We expect that the results provide basic information for mathematics history in Korea.

A Textual Bibliographic Analysis on the block books 《Xiangming Suanfa》 published in the Joseon Dynasty (조선(朝鮮) 간본(刊本) 《상명산법(詳明算法)》의 원문서지적(原文書誌的) 분석(分析))

  • 《Xiangming Suanfa》 is a mathematics text published in 1373. The preface and postscript of the block books 《Xiangming Suanfa》 in the Joseon Dynasty were published as they had been in the original text from China. It can be considered to be based on 《Xiangming Suanfa》 was published in Mingjingtang. The five different block books which is published in Korea, possessed in Yonsei University Library, Sanghuh Memorial Library of Konkuk University and the National Library of Korea, were compared. Through recension-correction of the text, this thesis is intended to help researchers in utilizing the research by providing fine print.

  • This article explores what is the genuine Koreanness in Korean arithmetic by examining what kind of influence the Chinese arithmetic had on the Korean arithmetic and how the Korean arithmetic scholars had accepted and utilized it. Because the main stream of Korean culture before the end of Chosun dynasty was located under the umbrella of the Chinese philosophy, technique, and culture, it is necessary to make researches on the historical documents and materials in order to establish the milestone in the Korean arithmetic history for the Korean arithmetic scholars. For this research, the arithmetic books published in between the sixteenth century and the end of Chosun dynasty are mainly consulted and discussed, dealing with the bibliographical introduction in the arithmetic Part in Re Outline History of the Korean Science & Technology written by Prof. Yong-Woon Kim.
