A Study on the Features of the Curriculum of Chosun-Sanhak in the 17th to 18th Century (17-18세기 조선산학의 교육과정적 특징 고찰)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the features of the curriculum of Chosun-Sanhak(朝鮮算學), the mathematics of Chosun Dynasty in the 17th to 18th century. The results of this study are as follows. First, the goal of education, teaching-learning method and assessment of Chosun-Sanhak in the 17th to 18th century had not changed since the 15th century. Second, the changes in the field of the organization of mathematical contents were observed. Chosun-Sanhak in that time was higher in the hierarchy than in the 15th to 16th century. The share of the equation and geometry had increased and various topics of mathematics had been studied as well. Third, in the field of the characteristics of mathematical contents, the influx of European mathematics and the uniqueness of Chosun-Sanhak had been observed. In conclusion, The 17th to 18th century was the time when Chosun-Sanhak had pursued the identity escaping from the effects of Chinese-Sanhak.

Approximate Approaches in Chinese and Chosun Mathematics (중국 및 조선 수학에서의 근사적 접근)

  • Approximation is a very useful approach in mathematics research. It was the same in traditional Chinese and Chosun mathematics. This study derived five characteristics from approximation approaches which were found in Chinese and Chosun mathematical books: improvement of approximate values, common and inevitable use of approximate values, recognition of approximate values and their reasons, comparison of their exactness, application of approximate principles. Through these characteristics, we can infer what Chinese and Chosun mathematicians recognized approximate values and how they manipulated them. They took approximate approaches by necessity or for the sake of convenience in mathematical study and its applications. Also, they tried to improve the degree of exactness of approximate values and use the inverse calculations to check them.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polymers with Azobenzene and Hexamethylene Groups in Main Chain (주사슬에 아조벤젠기와 헥사메틸렌기를 갖는 고분자의 합성 및 특성)

  • Polymers with various compositions of azobenzene and hexamethylene groups in the main chain were synthesized by a Schotten-Baumann reaction and their properties were investigated. The chemical structures and physical properties of the synthesized polymers were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarized optical microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. The polymers showed an inherent viscosity of 1.28-1.36 dl/g and were relatively insoluble in most organic solvents. The melt transition temperature increased rapidly with increasing number of azobenzene groups in the polymer. When the azobenzene monomer content was more than 50 mol%, no melting transition occurred below the decomposition temperature. Among the polymers with a melt transition temperature, the MP-A3C7 and MP-A5C5 polymers were liquid crystalline materials and exhibited a nematic phase with weak liquid crystallinity over a wide liquid crystal temperature range. This difference in the properties of the synthesized polymers is likely due to the changes in intermolecular forces resulting from the linearity and polarity of the trans-form of azobenzene.

A Study on the Structural Reinforcement for the Reduction of Transverse Vibration by Ship's Main Engine (선박 주기관에 의한 횡진동 저감을 위한 구조보강 연구)

  • Transverse vibrations of a ship's aft end and deckhouse are mainly induced by transverse exciting forces from the main engine. Resonance should be avoided in the initial design stages when there is a prediction of resonance between the main engine and transverse modes of the deckhouse. Estimates of frequencies for resonance avoidance are possible from the specifications of the main engine and propeller, but the inherent vibration frequency of the structure around the engine room is not easy to estimate due to the variation in the shape. Experience-oriented vibration design is also carried out, which results in many problems, such as process delay, over-injection of on-site personnel, and iterative performance of the design. For the flexible design of 8,600 TEU container vessels, this study addressed the resonance problem caused by the transverse vibration of the main engine when only the main engine was changed from 12 cylinders to 10 cylinders without modification of the hull structure layout. Efficient structural reinforcement design guidelines are presented for avoiding resonances with the main engine lateral vibration and the structure around the engine room. The guidelines are expected to be used as practical design guidelines at design sites.
