  • To clarify the community structure of phytoplankton in the Kyeonggi Bay, the community analysis were performed to investigate the relationship between the environmental factors and the phytoplankton communities. Low diversity with occurrence of few dominant species throughout the year, except summer, implies that ecological environment of this study area is very unstable due to incessant physical perturbation and large fluctuation of other environmental factors. According to the results of the cluster analysis this study area could be divided into river discharge, polluted and unpolluted area. Principal component analysis of overall phytoplankton community in this area clearly showed four seasonal succession patterns grouped into the spring type, the summer type, the late summer type, the late autumn-winter type. Summer communities composed of common phytoplankton are highly correlated with temperature and transparency. Winter communities composed of most tychopelagic plankton are positively correlated with suspended substances and nutrient, while negatively correlated with transparency.

  • For many coastal problems, such as wave transformation, tidal circulation, sediment transports and diffusion phenomena, we resort to numerical techniques. The representative numerical techniques are the method of finite differences and finite elements. The approximate algebraic equations, referred to as finite difference equations(FDEs), are subsequently solved at discrete grid points within the domain of interests. Therefore, a set of grid points within the domain, as well as the boundaries of the domain, must be specified. The generation of grids for FDEs, with uniform spacing, is very simple compared to that of finite elements. However, within a very complex domain, there are few grid generation tools we can use conveniently. Unfortunately, most of the commercial grid generation programs are developed only for finite element method. In this paper, grid generation method using digitizer, with uniform rectangular spacing, are introduced in detail. Didger and Surfer programs by Golden Software are necessary to produce comparatively accurate and simple depth data.

  • According to the development of internet with Web, WBI has greatly influence on the present educational society. However, it is difficutly to design the web of the dynamic motions of graphics or animation using general programming technique based on high or low level language. Recently, Mecromedia Company supported a tool that is called Authoware which is the leading visual rich-media authoring solution for creating Web and online learning applications, to solve the problem easily. In the paper, using the the Authoware we tried to develop a web page about tidal variations due to sea level change and intertidal zone variations using the Authorware 5.1. To do this, we used the ocean survey data of Iho beach and the tidal level data based on Tidal Tables of Cheju harbor. The results showed that the Authorware was very useful to construct the simulation of tidal phenomena on web. Therefore, the Authorware can be applied to the simulation related with animation and dynamic motions for the other WBI objective.

  • An experimental study is conducted to investigate the fluid flow and heat transfer around tubes arranged in line. All measurements are performed at Reynolds number 1.58*10$^{4}$ with varing tube spacings from the small pitch ratio(L/D=1.25) to the large pitch ratio(L/D=3.0). Mean static pressures and mean temperatures of the surface of tubes and mean velocities and turbulent intensities in tube banks are measured. The flow patterns and the characteristics of heat transfer are strongly influenced by the tube spacings. Especially, in the case of very small spacings(L/D=1.25), the flow between neighboring tubes becomes very stagnant and the heat transfer decreases. In the case of each tube spacing, the characteristics of heat transfer around the 3rd, the 4th and the 5th tubes are nearly similar to one another, because the flow around tubes becomes stable at the 3rd tubes. The local heat transfer has the peak value near the reattachment point which has the peak value of pressure, but the local heat transfer for the 2nd tube of L/D=1.25 without reattaching has the peak value at .theta.=75.deg.. For each pitch ratio, the mean heat transfer increases gradually toward the downstream tubes, because the oncoming flow through neighboring tubes comes closer to the forward and rear surfaces of the tube and the turbulent intensity becomes larger in the downstream direction.

  • Currently many vessels determine an overhead obstruction by a rule of thumb based on their draft for maritime navigation. Therefore they doesn't have a good overhead obstruction clearance because vertical position of vessels varies on time by tidal. As a result, it is occurred maritime accidents that the mainmast of vessels is bumped against overhead facilities. And disaster by global warming and rising sea levels have increased casualties. So we feel keenly the necessity of warning system for not an earthquake but disaster wave such a tsunami. This paper analyzes a precise GPS ephemeris for maritime precise positioning to solve these problems. The precise GPS ephemeris provided by International GNSS service gives a difficulty to real-time application because of its sample interval. This paper proposes an effective interpolation method for real-time application, and it analyzes an accuracy of precise GPS ephemeris through an interpolation method.

  • The satellite image acquired by RADARSAT SAR on August 15, 1996 reveals internal waves in north coastal waters of Cheju Island. It is indicated from the image data, the tidal elevation data, and the bottom topography data, the internal waves seem to be generated by interaction between shallow bottom and tidal currents travelling in the stratified water in the summer time during the tidal changeovers from ebb to flood. The internal waves generated in such condition show patterns of trains of solitons. Probable amplitude of observed solitons is calculated using estimation of the soliton wave length from SAR image data and K-dV equation. Detection of the internal waves is very significant not only to military strategist for underwater maneuvers such as operation of submarines, but also to physical and biological oceanographers. Temporal and spatial variation of the internal waves are needed to be measured by simultaneous in-situ field study together with SAR to examine the nature of these internal waves.

  • Because of the development of modern medical science and increased longevity of elderly due to better health care: we are facing a new growing generation of "silver" senior citizens. In near future we will see a slow increase in senior spare time activities in our society. In this study the types of the spare time activities are researched and analyzed. Over the age of 60 most seniors spend ample time watching television and sleeping. Amazingly, in the second age group, seniors aged forty to fifty, when shown to the wonders of internet and cyber technology tend to accept and desire it. It is expected be seen this trend will increase. Secondly, in the case that seniors in their forties and fifties are entering into the silver generation, we can expect more promising multimedia content developed for the elderly.

  • Tidal and wind-driven currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated using a three-dimensional numerical model developed by Kim et al. (1993). The simulations indicate that the flow patterns in the bay are predominated by the bathymetry, wind and river inflow, and the effects of wind on the flow pattern in the inner bay are much stronger than those in the entrance channel. Computed tidal currents coincide with the field measurements. The horizontal and vertical velocities of tidal and residual currents are strong in the entrance channel of the bay, whereas the velocities are relatively weak in the western and northern parts of the bay. Computed velocity fields show the expected phase difference between the velocities in the surface and those in the bottom layer, and these characteristics are more remarkable during the spring tide than the neap tide. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river inflow, and such phenomena are more remarkable during the neap tide than the spring tide.

  • After the heavy precipitation from April 1969 to September 1970, more than 1.359 10$\^$6/㎥ of fresh water was discharged through diversion channel of the Namgang Dam. The sands and muds in the northern Sachon Bay were moved and swept away by the strong southsard flow which was observed to be speedier than five knots. The shellfish culture facility as well as the oysters and bivalves were buried. In Sachon Bay, a southward surface ebb current of approximately one knot stratifies above the northward flow of approximately 0.5 knot, which seems to be similar to the salt wedge estuary. The stratified current is responsible for the breaking of the gill nets and other fishing gears. The salinity of sea water in Chinju Bay decreased remarkably and the abnormal low salinity water lower than 5 was distributed in Sachon Bay. The low salinity water front was observed in eastern Chinju Bay and the Samchonpo Channel, where the salinity was increased from 4.6 to approximately 30 within half a tidal cycle. These caused the oysters and bivalves die, and drove anchovies and octopus out to the sea and prevented them from approaching the bay. The decrease of salinity causes the decrease of density and osmotic pressure of sea water. Turbid water would prevent the sunlight from penetrate into deep layer.
