  • The goal of this study is to explore categories and components of science literacy and investigate the trend in the importance of each category of science literacy required for Koreans living in a future society in 2050 through survey analyses with the public. This study, as a preliminarily research, is a part of a larger project called 'developing science for all Koreans,' which investigates science literacy for all Koreans. According the survey result, the definition of science literacy should include scientific thinking and working methods, application of science, etc. in addition to existing science knowledge. We also suggested science literacy including knowledge and competencies, as well as organization of science subjects in 2050 future school education, and analyzed trends in the importance of science literacy domains. Based on the results, we suggested the scientific method, science knowledge, and science application as domains of science literacy. Discussed in the conclusion are implications and directions for developing 'science for all Koreans' living in a future society in 2050.

  • Recent research has shown that students' interest in learning physics is not a simple one. In this study the dimensions of students' interest in learning physics have been identified. These are the topic being taught, the activity in which the students are involved, and the motive of the students for learning physics. A Likert-style pilot questionnaire was constructed for identifying these dimensions and given to 13 year-old 162 students. A factor analysis of the results indicates that there are meaningful sub-dimensions in interest. In other words, while there were no specific sub-dimensions in topic dimension, motive dimension could be divided into intrinsic motive and extrinsic motive, and activity dimension could also be divided into receptive, experiential, high cognitive, and interactive activity.

  • This study explores an initial framework for online product categorization by examining the relationships among Internet motivations, buying tendencies, and online purchase intentions for product categories. A total of 217 usable questionnaires were obtained from respondents in a southwestern state in the United States. A path model using a correlation matrix with maximum likelihood was estimated using LISREL 8.53. Findings indicated that Internet motivations consisted of four factors: Diversion, Economic, Information, and Social motivations. In addition, online products were classified into three categories based on purchase intentions: Sensory, Cognitive, and Search products. Estimated path model showed that diversion and economic motivations affected impulse buying tendency, whereas economic, information and social motivations influenced planned buying tendency in the online context. Also, the buying tendencies were significantly related to online purchase intentions for the product categories. Purchase intentions for sensory products were more strongly affected by impulse buying tendency, whereas purchase intentions for cognitive and search products were more strongly affected by planned buying tendency. Theoretical and managerial implications were discussed for devising an appropriate e-market strategy for specific product categories.

  • Algorithms for estimating breeding values on several categorical data by using latent variables with threshold conception were developed and showed. Thresholds on each categorical trait were estimated by Newton’s method via gradients and Hessian matrix. This algorithm was developed by way of expansion of bivariate analysis provided by Quaas(2001). Breeding values on latent variables of categorical traits and observations on linear traits were estimated by preconditioned conjugate gradient(PCG) method, which was known having a property of fast convergence. Example was shown by simulated data with two linear traits and a categorical trait with four categories(CE=calving ease) and a dichotomous trait(SB=Still Birth) in threshold animal mixed model(TAMM). Breeding value estimates in TAMM were compared to those in linear animal mixed model (LAMM). As results, correlation estimates of breeding values to parameters were 0.91${\sim}$0.92 on CE and 0.87${\sim}$0.89 on SB in TAMM and 0.72~0.84 on CE and 0.59~0.70 on SB in LAMM. As conclusion, PCG method for estimating breeding values on several categorical traits with linear traits were feasible in TAMM.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the pressure treatment characteristics of yellow poplar skin timber with ACQ-2, CUAZ-3, and CuHDO-1. The effect of moisture content (MC) on treatability was investigated, and fixation characteristics of copper-based preservatives were also evaluated. Sapwood of yellow poplar, which was dried below 50 percent MC, was fully penetrated with preservatives, and minimum requirement of preservative retention for the hazard class H3 was achieved. Through measuring retention gradient in yellow poplar sapwood, it was confirmed that minimum requirement of preservative retention for the hazard class H3 was achieved in the assay zone from the surface to 15 mm-depth when the specimens were dried below 30 percent MC. Yellow poplar heartwood did not meet the minimum requirement of penetration and retention for the hazard class H3 over the range of pretreatment MCs tested. The fixation rate of copper was much faster under drying condition compared with nondrying condition; more than 90% of copper were fixed in 3 weeks at $21^{\circ}C$ under drying conditions.

  • Traditional Pearson chi-squared test is not appropriate for the data collected by the complex sample design. When one uses the traditional Pearson chi-squared test to the complex sample categorical data, it may give wrong test results, and the error may occur not only due to the biased variance estimators but also due to the biased point estimators of cell proportions. In this study, the design based consistent Wald test statistics was derived for k-population homogeneity test, and the traditional Pearson chi-squared test statistics was partitioned into three parts according to the causes of error; the error due to the bias of variance estimator, the error due to the bias of cell proportion estimator, and the unseparated error due to the both bias of variance estimator and bias of cell proportion estimator. An analysis was conducted for empirical results of the relative size of each error component to the Pearson chi-squared test statistics. The second year data from the fourth Korean national health and nutrition examination survey (KNHANES, IV-2) was used for the analysis. The empirical results show that the relative size of error from the bias of variance estimator was relatively larger than the size of error from the bias of cell proportion estimator, but its degrees were different variable by variable.

  • Data Science is emerging as a closely related field of study to Library and Information Science (LIS), and as an interdisciplinary subject combining LIS, statistics and computer science in an attempt to understand the value of data by applying what LIS has been doing for collecting, storing, organizing, analyzing, and utilizing information. To investigate which subject fields other than LIS, statistics, and computer science are related to Data Science, this study retrieved 667 materials from Web of Science Core Collection, extracted terms representing Web of Science Categories, examined subject fields that are studying Data Science using descriptive analysis, analyzed the intellectual structure of the field by co-word analysis and network analysis, and visualized the results as a Pathfinder network with clustering created with the PNNC clustering algorithm. The result of this study might help to understand the intellectual structure of the Data Science field, and may be helpful to give an idea for developing relatively new curriculum.

  • This study aimed to analyze research trends of 'digital divide' in Library and Information Science. To this end, we coded research subjects with 11 subcategories, and research objectives with 4 subcategories, and research methods with 4 subcategories, and constructed keyword networks to which a pathfinder algorithm was applied. As a result of the analysis, 79.5% of studies are on the disabled, multicultural families, and the elderly among information vulnerable groups, and it was found to be concentrated in specific groups. In addition, digital divide related studies have been actively conducted for the purpose of resolving information vulnerabilities such as people with disabilities. We also found that these studies focused on verifying the effectiveness by designing and applying treatments such as informatization education, information utilization, and reading programs. Lastly, the most frequently used research method in the digital divide was found to use case studies or questionnaires simultaneously with literature research.

  • An angular dependence experiment was made and a performance test of the Teledyne dosimetry system was done in accordance with the ANSI N13.11-1992. The angular dependence experiment was performed with $^{137}Cs$ and low energy X-ray beam. Teledyne dosimetry system performed well at the $0^{\circ}$ angle of incidence for all dosimeters in both vertical and horizontal irradiations. It would have easily passed the 0.5 tolerance limit. But the dosimetry system was not performed well at the ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ angle of incidence for low energy X-ray beam. The accuracy for $^{137}Cs$ beam at all angles of incidence was within the 0.5 tolerance limit. Therefore performance of the dosimetry system could be considered acceptable in case that the dosimeter is irradiated to $^{137}Cs$ beam. However, it could not be acceptable for the dosimeter irradiated to low energy X-ray, especially at more than ${\pm}40^{\circ}$
