  • Short-term variations of phytoplankton community structure in the southeast coastal waters of Korea from July to September in 2006 were investigated with data set of phytoplankton, chemical and physical water properties, and meterological data. A total of 11 sampling sites of 4 different depths (surface, 5 m, 10 m, and bottom) were visited on July 11-14, July 24-26, August 7-10, August 21-24 and September 5-8. We identified 151 species in 63 genera of phytoplankton in which diatoms were the most diverse group composed of 92 species in 37 genera. Dinoflagellates were the second diverse group of 52 species in 22 genera. The other groups include 7 species in 4 genera including Raphidophytes, and Euglenophyta. After rainy season, excessive nutrients from adjacent streams to the stratified water column proliferates Chaetoceros group in July. But biomass of phytoplankton and nutrient concentrations were decreased during the period of a drought in August. However, Chaetoceros was the most dominant genera in all depths of the first, second, third and fifth cruises, except the 4th cruise on August 21-24 when dominant group were dinoflagellates including Gymnodinium spp. and Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The characteristic of phytoplankton community and environment condition during summer 2006 can be summarized as: 1) low concentration of nutrients caused by a long lasting drought in August 2) no summer outbreak of C. polykrikoides because the strength of offshore waters was weak than other years, and 3) Chaetoceros spp. was the dominant species despite short period appearance of dinoflagellates.

  • The distribution of water mass in Deukryang Bay was investigated using observational data obtained on July 12 (spring tide) and 19 (neap tide) in 1994. In characteristics of water mass at the bay the area is divided into three ones by a vertical attenuation coefficient k and a stratification parameter, log sub (10) (H/U super (3)), was H is depth, and U mean velocity in the bay. The contour of k=0.6 has a similar distribution to the isobath of 10m depth in spring tide, and of 5m depth in neap tide, respectively. This indicates that the water mass in the area between the isobath of 5m and 10m depth is changed by tidal periods. The stratification parameter corresponding to k=0.6 was 2.1~2.2. In the shallow water of 5m depth the characteristics of water mass was distributed in temperature of 25.5~31.$0^{\circ}C$ and salinity of 32.8~33.8PSU(Practical Salinity Unit), the temperature was high and the salinity distributed widely. In the deep water of 10m depth it was the temperature of 22.0~29.5$^{\circ}C$ and the salinity of 33.0~33.6PSU, the temperature was low and the salinity distributed narrowly. In the middle depth water of 5m to 10m depth, the temperature of 22.0~30.$0^{\circ}C$ and the salinity of 32.8~33.5PSU, its values showed the middle between the values of the deep area and the values of the shallow area.

  • Temperature and salinity were observed in Kugum Suro Channel in February, April, August and October 1993. Temperature ranged from $7.0^{\circ}C\;to\;25.0^{\circ}C$ throughout the year and its variation was about $18^{\circ}C$. The maximum temperature difference between surface and bottom was less than $0.75^{\circ}C$ for a year, which meant that the temperature stratification in Kugum Suro Channel was considerably week. Salinity had also a small variation range of less than $0.5\%_{\circ}$. Salinity varied from $34.0\%_{\circ}$ in April to $30.0\%_{\circ}$ in August and its fluctuation patterns were quite similar to the seasonal variations of the precipitation and the duration of sunshine observed at Kohung Weather station. Seasonal variation of sea water density in T-S diagram showed that the water mass in Kugum Suro Channel could be largely affected by regional atmospheric conditions. Temperature increased in ebb tide and decreased in flood tide, but salinity decreased in ebb tide and increased in flood tide for a day. The period of fluctuations in temperature and salinity measured for 25 hours was nearly coincident with the semi-diurnal tide which was predominant in that region. Stratification parameters computed in Kugum Suro Channel areas were less than $4.0J/m^3$ the year round, which indicated that vortical mixing from the bottom boundary caused by tidal current played an important role in deciding the stratification regime in Kugum Suro Channel. In estimating the equation which defines stratification and mixing effects in the observed areas, the tidal mixing term ranged from $4.7J/M^3\;to\;14.1J/m^3$ was greater than any other terms like solar radiation, river discharge and wind mixing.

  • In this study, chemical analysis and ecotoxicity tests of leachate from disposal site for foot-and-mouth disease carcasses (FMD leachate) were conducted to collect fundamental data that will be used to develop environmental risk assessment tools for FMD leachate. For chemical analysis, concentration of $Cl^-$, $NH{_4}{^+}-N$, Korea standard method indicators for detection of leachate released from animal carcasses burial site into groundwater and NRN (Ninhydrin-Reactive Nitrogens), a newly suggested screening test indicator to detect groundwater contamination by FMD leachate, were assessed. For ecotoxicity tests, luminescent bacteria (V. fischeri), micro-algae (P. subcapitata) and water flea (D. magna) were selected as test species. Correlation analysis between the concentration of $Cl^-$, $NH{_4}{^+}-N$, NRN and the toxicity to V. fischeri was performed to identify the better indicators to monitor FMD leachate contamination. From regression analysis, the concentration of the indicators in FMD leachate contaminated sample that induced halfmaximal toxic effect to V. fischeri was evaluated. Results obtained from this study can be applied to assess the risk by FMD leachate and to establish the guideline to manage risk in relation to FMD leachate.

  • Temporal and spatial variations of surface water temperature in Jinju Bay for the period of 2010~2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 17 stations in the south coast of Korea. Water temperature shows the maximum late in January and the minimum early in August. Seasonal variation of water temperatures at the north part of the bay is smaller than the middle and the south. In summer, the lowest and the highest of maximum water temperature are distributed around Jijok Channel which is located at the south of the bay. The fluctuations of water temperatures at Noryang and Daebang Channel are smaller than others because of vertical mixing caused by passage of strong tidal currents. Wind and strong currents affect on the stratification of the surface water layer near Daebang Channel. High temperatures come in frequently around the north area when eastward constant flows appear at neap tide as blowing westerly in the springtime at Noryang Channel. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at 7~20 day periods at Noryang Channel, 7~20 day and semidiurnal at the west coast of Changsun Island and Jijok Channel and 7~20 day and diurnal at the middle of the bay. Temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel shows high coherence and has leading phase with those at other stations in the bay. However, the phase of temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel falls behind that at Daebang Channel. Daebang Channel has an influence on the temperature fluctuation only at the west and middle part of the bay. Cross-correlation analyses for the temperature fluctuation show that Jinju Bay could be classified into six areas; Noryang Channel, the area of convergence and divergence at the north, Daebang Channel, the west coast of Changsun Island, the mixing area at the middle of the bay and the south inside of the bay, respectively.

  • Fifteen min-microtremor data sets were collected at 136 sites from a coastal area of Kunsan and 117 sites from an inland area of Jeonju located in SW Korea, and were analyzed for the HVSR (Horizontal to Vertical Spectral Ratio) of the sites. The microtremor spectra of the coastal area have stronger energy in the lower frequency range from 1-6 Hz than those of the coastal area. This result can be attributed to the effect of the waves and tides in the Keum river and the Yellow sea. Twenty four hours of measurement of the microtremor indicated that the microtremor spectrum correlates with the human activities, but the microtremor HVSR peak was observed consistently at the characteristic frequency for the site. The HVSR peaks were grouped into 4 types -"single peak", "double peak", "broad peak" or "no peak"- based on their shapes. More than 90% of the data sets exhibit peak frequencies ($F_0$) which can be easily identified. The distribution of $F_0$ reveals a close relationship with the topography and local geology of the areas, exhibiting high F0s in the hillside areas and low $F_0s$ in the reclaimed land area. While the amplitudes of microtremor HVSR peak frequencies are less than 4 in the downstream of the inland area, those of the recently reclaimed land in the coastal area are extremely high (more than 10). The results of this study indicate that detailed HVSR studies are essential for the earthquake hazard reduction of reclaimed lands.

  • In general, the power law and logarithmic profile are commonly used as flow vertical velocity profile model. However, since the parameters of profile vary with characteristics of coastal environment, it is necessary to estimate these values from measured data using regression analysis. In this paper, we estimated the power law exponent (n), friction velocity ($u^*$) and roughness length ($z_0$) of logarithmic profile by analyzing measured tidal current data that are averaged at a interval of 30 min. In the results of analysis, power law exponent (n) was estimated to be about 10.75 during flood and about 9.3 during ebb. Meanwhile, $u^*$ of logarithmic profile was estimated to be about 0.084 m/s, 0.105 m/s during flood and ebb, respectively. Also, $z_0$ was estimated to be 0.004 m and 0.006 m, respectively.

  • In this study we try to identify the three-dimensional mixing characteristics of Seomjin River discharges in Seomjin River Estuary and Gwangyang Bay using a seasonal field observation (CTD) during spring tide and a three-dimensional numerical model with EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code). The tidal elevation conditions of the four main tidal harmonic constituents on the open boundary and river discharges and thermal effluents at the specific boundary are considered. The calculated harmonic constants of tide and tidal current agreed well with those of observations at two stations for tide and two stations for tidal current. The model successfully reproduced well known the estuarine circulation in Seomjin River Estuary where tide and river discharges are dominant forcings. In the winter mean discharges case, tidal currents move Seomjin River discharges in Seomjin River mouth and in the summer mean discharges case, river flows move Seomjin River discharges near ae Seomjin River Estuary. A three-dimensional mixing characteristics of Seomjin River Estuary show well a three-dimensional estuarine circulation and thermal effluents effect to the seasonal variation of river discharges.
