  • In landscape design by public institutions, although the costs and species of landscape trees stipulated by the Korean Public Procurement Service(PPS) are generally adhered to, the PPS regulations about planting trees with well-developed rootlets are almost entirely neglected. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of buried container modules, which are a new technology and product in landscape production that is able to reduce the defect rate while complying with regulations. To this end, this study measured rootlet density, rootlet development length, rootlet survival rate on excavation, and impairments of tree growth for 3 months after root pruning, and compared these variables for the container modules with those for trees that underwent root pruning in bare ground, and those that were cultivated in a container above ground. The results were as follows: First, the rootlet density was 88% for the trees in container modules, which was very high. Trees that underwent standard root pruning in bare ground had a somewhat lower density of 64%. Meanwhile, the trees that were cultivated in pots above ground died, invalidating measurement. Second, in terms of rootlet development and rootlet survival rate, the trees in container modules showed a mean length of 10.4cm, and 100% survival rate, indicating that there was no rootlet damage caused by excavation. For the trees that only underwent root pruning in bare ground, the mean length was 25.6cm and the rootlet survival rate was only half that of the trees in container modules, at 56%, demonstrating considerable damage. Rootlet development did not occur at all in the trees grown in pots. Third, the trees in container modules and those that underwent root pruning in bare ground did not show any deaths during the root pruning process, or any impairments such as stunted leaf growth. Conversely, the trees grown in pots nearly all died, and severe impairments of tree growth were observed. As shown by the results above, when we evaluated the performance of buried container modules, they showed the most outstanding performance of the three models tested in this study. The container modules prevent defects by stimulating early rooting in environments that with poor conditions for growth, or in trees that are not suited to the summer environment Therefore, it is expected that they would be an optimal means by which to enable compliance with rules such as the regulation presented by the PPS.

  • Trees, cultivated in containers, are appropriate in soil deformation such as road sites with cutting and filling. This study tested the effectiveness of trees produced in containers for early rootage in street tree transplantation. For the study, Korean Mountain Ashes(Sorbus alnifolia) were used for experimental groups. The groups were categorized into three categories: trees cultivated in containers with mulching treatment(group A), trees cultivated outdoors with mulching treatment (group B), and trees cultivated in containers with weeding treatment(group C). Each group consisted of ten trees of the same size and transplanted to the experimental site. In order to compare each group's rootage, the study was carried out with the chlorophyll fluorescence method by the analysis of photochemical reaction. As a result of the study, group B had the lowest the maximum fluorescence amount(P). The amount of fluorescence increased by OJ transition of the process, and appeared to reduce the photosystem II electron transport efficiency. In photosystem II, electron transfer energy flux through photosystem I(RE1o/RC, RE1o/CS) was also reduced by more than 20% in group B. These results may imply that transplantation of container-cultivated trees with mulching treatment provides the most rapid rootage among the groups. The weeding treatment is also more effective than mulching treatment for rapid rootage of street trees.

  • Forty different apartment houses were subjected to assess the status of indoor - landscaping plants found at each apartment house in Seoul for the year of 1986 and 7989. 1. Comparing with those of 1986, 46% increase in total indoor plant species and 68% increase in the number of them were observed. The most abundant sort found in 1786 was oriental orchid, African violet, Scindapsus, cacti, and Clivia, and in 1989, first with oriental orchid, cacti, Chlorophytum, Clivia and Dracaena, in that order. 2. Foliage ornamental plants were mast popularly found in both years of 1986 and 1989 when considered for horticultural classification of plants. 3. Average plant height ranged between 15 to 30 cm in the year of i986, whereas 31 to 80 cm in 1987, indicaling that the size of plants has greatly increased. 4. Kind of planters or containers was most frequently shown to be made of plastic material in both years, and the porcelain ones have significantly been increased to use recently. 5. Most indoor plants placed at the rooms were on the floor in those years, yet the use of planting shelves became particularly manifesting in the year of 1989. 6. Fittonia and cacti were the most frequently used plant materials for installing terrariums at apartment rooms In the year of 1986, whereas Adiantum and Maranta were so in 1989, indicating that the growers choose much adaptable species in apartment environments. Most of the plants grown to landscaping the indoors was apartment verandas in those years. 8. Average number of indoor plants possessed at each apartment houses surveyed for the year of 1986 was 16 different ones, whereas 27 each In 1789, shoving a noteworthy increase in the number. 9. There have been apparent increase and improvement inhabitant's indoor - plant interest in the years to pass and probably to come.
