  • A program of launch vehicle performance analysis is composed for the education of the conceptual design of launch vehicles and the requirement analysis for the propulsion system design. The program is applied for the mission analysis of space launch vehicles based on KSLV-II with liquid rocket boosters. The 75-ton class liquid rocket engine is assumed for the boosters by referring the mass ratio of KSLV-II second stage. The launch performance analysis is carried out for KSLV-II with 2, 3 and 4 boosters by targeting the circular orbit of 700 km altitude. The trajectory is assumed as two-dimension considering the variation of the flight environment. Payload of advanced KSLV-II could be increased to maximum 3 tons, though it is limited by the thrust performance of the upper stage.

  • In order to analyze combustion characteristics of methane-oxygen diffusion flame in a model combustor, combustion experiments were carried out under various spray conditions of propellant scrutinizing combustion stability limit and flame shapes. As the propellant approached the theoretical equivalence ratio condition, a stable detached flame was observed even under high oxygen Reynolds number. And the length of the visible flame increased and the lift-off distance of the flame exhibited a tendency toward decrease. Due to the swirl effect of the propellant by the swirl-coaxial injector, a wide and short flame was produced. Thus, it may be appropriate to employ the swirl-coaxial injector in thrusters having a limited physical dimension.

  • In this study, a preliminary design code was developed for the initiation of HTPB/LOX hybrid rocket system. HTPB was assumed to have a constant regression rate. And initial input parameters; number of port, initial O/F ratio F/W ratio, and chamber pressure, were varied to analyze the effects on the performance and geometry of rocket system. The results showed a qualitatively good agreement with previous data. And it was revealed that there exists a number of design results that meet the mission requirements and that we could find an optimal design case if a proper constraint would be imposed. Thus, it is natural to account for the optimal algorithm during the design procedure and to consider more realistic and reliable formulations used for weight estimation of structural supports and accessories.

  • The optimal design and combustion analysis of the gas generator for Liquid Rocket Engine (LRE) were performed. A fuel-rich gas generator in open cycle turbopump system was designed for 101on1 in thrust with RP-1/LOx combination. The optimal design was done for maximizing specific impulse of main combustion chamber with constraints of combustion temperature and power matching in turbopump system. Results of optimal design show the dimension of length, diameter, and contraction ratio of gas generator. The configuration of the gas generator and the condition for performance which can maximize the objective function were determined and found to meet the design constraints. Also, the combustion analysis was conducted to evaluate the performance of designed chamber and injector of gas generator. And the effect of the turbulence ring was investigated on the mixing enhancement in the chamber.

  • In accordance with the revision of the US-Korea missile guidelines, restrictions on the use of solid propellants for space launch vehicles have been completely lifted. The solid propellant can be used as a solid propellant rocket like the KSR-1 (Korea Sounding Rocket-1), and can also be used as a thrust augmentation booster for liquid fuel launch vehicles. It is known that solid propellants have a lower risk of explosion than liquid propellants. but if an accident such as an explosion at the Alcantara Launch Center in Brazil occurs, it can lead to a large-scale personal accident. In order to prevent such large-scale accidents, it is necessary to review and reflect the minimum safety distance during use, storage and combustion test of solid propellants from the planning phase of the project. In this paper, the minimum safety distance for safe use of the solid propellant is presented by dividing it into storage facilities and combustion tests.

  • This paper addresses a newly proposed start-up method of the HAUSAT-2 momentum wheel. The HAUSAT-2 is a 25kg class nanosatellite which is stabilized to earth pointing by 3-axis active control method. A momentum wheel performs two functions. It provides a pitch-axis momentum bias while measuring satellite pitch and roll attitude. Pitch control is accomplished in the conventional way by driving a momentum wheel in response to pitch attitude errors. Precession control and nutation damping are provided by driving the pitch axis magnetic torquer. A momentum wheel is nominally spinning at a particular rate and changes speed. This simulation study investigates the feasibility and performance of a proposed strategy for starting-up the wheel. A proposed strategy to start-up the wheel shows that a pitch momentum wheel can be successfully started-up to its nominal speed from rest and be stabilized to nadir pointing.

  • Drones require altitude holding in order to achieve flight objectives. The altitude holding of the drone is to repeat the operation of raising or lowering the drone according to the altitude information being measured in real-time. When the drones are maintained altitude, the drone's altitude will continue to change due to external factors such as imbalance in thrust due to difference in motor speed or wind. Therefore, in order to maintain the altitude of drone, we have to exactly measure the continuously changing altitude of the drone. Generally, the acceleration sensor is used for measuring the height of the drones. In this method, there is a problem that the measured value due to the integration error accumulates, and the drone's vibration is recognized by the altitude change. To solve the difficulty of the altitude measurement, commercial drones and existing studies are used for altitude measurement together with acceleration sensors by adding other sensors. However, most of the additional sensors have a limitation on the measurement distance and when the sensors are used together, the calculation processing of the sensor values increases and the altitude measurement speed is delayed. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately measure the altitude of the drone without considering additional sensors or devices. In this paper, we propose a measurement algorithm that improves general altitude measurement method using acceleration sensor and show that accuracy of altitude holding and altitude measurement is improved as a result of applying this algorithm.

  • Underwater tracked vehicle is employed to perform underwater heavy works on saturated seafloor. When an underwater tracked vehicle travels on the seafloor, shearing action and ground settlement take place on the soil-track interface, which develops the soil thrust and soil resistance, respectively, and they restrict the tractive performance of an underwater tracked vehicle. Thus, unlike the paved road, underwater tracked vehicle performance does not solely rely on its engine thrust, but also on the soil-track interaction. This paper aimed at evaluating the tractive performance of an underwater tracked vehicle with respect to ground conditions (soil type, and relative density or consistency) and vehicle conditions (weight of vehicle, and geometry of track system), based on the soil-track interaction theory. The results showed that sandy ground and silty sandy ground generally provide sufficient tractions for an underwater tracked vehicle whereas tractive performance is very much restricted on clayey ground, especially for a heavy-weighted underwater tracked vehicle. Thus, it is concluded that an underwater tracked vehicle needs additional equipment to enhance the tractive performance on the clayey ground.

  • The use of cable tunnels for electric power transmission as well as their construction in difficult conditions such as in subsea terrains and large overburden areas has increased. So, in order to efficiently operate the small diameter shield TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), the estimation of advance rate and development of a design model is necessary. However, due to limited scope of survey and face mapping, it is very difficult to match the rock mass characteristics and TBM operational data in order to achieve their mutual relationships and to develop an advance rate model. Also, the working mechanism of previously utilized linear cutting machine is slightly different than the real excavation mechanism owing to the penetration of a number of disc cutters taking place at the same time in the rock mass in conjunction with rotation of the cutterhead. So, in order to suggest the advance rate and machine design models for small diameter TBMs, an EPB (Earth Pressure Balance) shield TBM having 3.54 m diameter cutterhead was manufactured and 19 cases of full-scale tunneling tests were performed each in 87.5 ㎥ volume of artificial rock mass. The relationships between advance rate and machine data were effectively analyzed by performing the tests in homogeneous rock mass with 70 MPa uniaxial compressive strength according to the TBM operational parameters such as thrust force and RPM of cutterhead. The utilization of the recorded penetration depth and torque values in the development of models is more accurate and realistic since they were derived through real excavation mechanism. The relationships between normal force on single disc cutter and penetration depth as well as between normal force and rolling force were suggested in this study. The prediction of advance rate and design of TBM can be performed in rock mass having 70 MPa strength using these relationships. An effort was made to improve the application of the developed model by applying the FPI (Field Penetration Index) concept which can overcome the limitation of 100% RQD (Rock Quality Designation) in artificial rock mass.
