  • Inherent strain method, a hybrid method of experimental and numerical, is known to be very efficient in predicting the plate deformation due to line heating. For the simulation of deformation using inherent strain method, it is important to determine the magnitude and the region of inherent strain properly. Because the phase of steel transforms differently depending on the actual speed of cooling following line heating, it should be also considered in determining the inherent strain. A heat transfer analysis method including the effects of impinging water jet, film boiling, and radiation is proposed to simulate the water cooling process widely used in shipyards. From the above simulation it is possible to obtain the actual speed of cooling and volume percentage of each phase in the inherent strain region of a line heated steel plate. Based on the material properties calculated from the volume percentage of each phase, it should be possible to predict the plate deformations due to line heating with better precision.

  • Viscous solutions of supersonic side jet nozzle and supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. For rapid and abrupt control of a missile in supersonic flight, side jet on a missile body is found to be a useful devise as evidenced by recent missile development at several nations. The magnitude of the side jet and the duration of it decide the level of control of such a missile system. The aerodynamic characteristics of the side jet devise itself are examined in terms of key parameters such as the side jet nozzle geometry, the chamber pressure and temperature. On the other hand, the jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the plate/nozzle distance increases, and the frequency of the wall pressure is estimated on the order of 10.0 KHz. Objectives of this paper are to show accurate simulation of nozzle flow itself and to demonstrate the jet flow structure when the jet interacts with a wall at a close range.

  • This paper presents numerical analysis and design optimization of various turbine blade cooling techniques with three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) analysis. The fluid flow and heat transfer have been performed using ANSYS-CFX 11.0. A fan-shaped hole for film-cooling has been carried out to improve film-cooling effectiveness with the radial basis neural network method. The injection angle of hole, lateral expansion angle of hole and ratio of length-to-diameter of the hole are chosen as design variables and spatially averaged film-cooling effectiveness is considered as an objective function which is to be maximized. The impingement jet cooling has been performed to investigate heat transfer characteristic with geometry variables. Distance between jet nozzle exit and impingement plate, inclination of nozzle and aspect ratio of nozzle hole are considered as geometry variables. The area averaged Nusselt number is evaluated each geometry variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered array pin-fins has been investigated to increase heat transfer performance ad to decrease friction loss using KRG modeling. Two non-dimensional variables, the ratio of the eight diameter of the pin-fins and ratio of the spacing between the pin-fins to diameter of the pin-fins selected as design variables. A rotating rectangular channel with staggered dimples on opposite walls are formulated numerically to enhance heat transfer performance. The ratio of the dimple depth and dimple diameter are selected as geometry variables.

  • To control the coating thickness of zinc in the process of continuous hot-dip galvanizing, it is known from early days that the gas wiping through an air knife system is the most effective because of the obtainable of uniformity of coating thickness, possibility of thin coating, working ability in high speed and simplicity of control. But, the gas wiping using in the galvanizing process brings about a problem of splashing from the strip edge for a certain high speed of coating. Also, it is known that the problem of splashing directly depends upon the galvanizing speed and nozzle stagnation pressure. In theses connections, in the present study, we proposed two kinds of air knife systems having the same expansion rate of nozzle, and the jet structures and coating thicknesses from a conventional and new proposed nozzles are compared. In numerical analysis, the governing equations consisted of two-dimensional time dependent Navier-Stokes equations, standard k-e turbulence model to solve turbulence stress and so on are employed. As a result, it is found that it had better to use the constant rate nozzle from the point view of the energy saving to obtain the same coating thickness. Also, to enhance the cutting ability at the strip, it is advisable to use an air knife with the constant expansion rate nozzle.

  • Industrial ejector system is a facility to transport, to compress or to pump out a low pressure secondary flow by using a high pressure primary flow. An advantage of the ejector system is in its geometrical simplicity, not having any moving part, compared with other fluid machinery. Most of the previous works have been performed experimentally and analytically. The obtained data. are too insufficient to improve our current understanding on the detailed flow field inside the ejector. In order to provide more comprehensive data on this ejector flow field, two-dimensional computations using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations were performed for a very wide range of operating pressure ratio of the supersonic ejector with a secondary throat. The current results showed that the supersonic ejector system has an optimum pressure ratio for the secondary flow total pressure to be minimized. The numerical results clearly revealed the shock system, shock/boundary layer interaction, and secondary flow entrainment inside the supersonic ejector.
