  • Cement has been used as a main material in the modern construction industry. However, it has been pointed out as a main cause of global warming due to carbon dioxide generated during manufactured. Recently, research that replacing cement substitute to industrial by-products such as Blast Furnace Slag which is by-producted in steelworks. When Blast Furnace Slag is used as a cement substitute, it shows a problem of lower initial strength, which is caused by glassy membrane on the particle surface. In this study, we used Electrolysis Alkaline Aqueous to improve the usability and problem of lower initial strength. As a result of the experiment, cement matrix using Blast Furnace Slag and Alkaline Aqueous showed initial strength and hydrate product were developed than that using general mixing water. Also, as a result of porosity analysis, It was confirmed that cement matrix using Alkaline Aqueous and Blast Furnace Slag has a tighter structure in internal porosity and porosity distribution than using general mixing water.

  • This study examined the manufacturing technology used for the flat iron axes excavated from Ulsan Hadae. Their microstructures were analyzed using metallurgical methods. In addition, a variety of manufacturing technologies were examined and compared using existing research materials on flat iron axes. As a result of analyzing ten flat iron axes, which were excavated in the order that they were laid out in a row in one of the wooden coffin tombs at Ulsan Hadae, Tomb No. 44, it was possible to classify the flat iron axe manufacturing technology and system into three types: 'pure iron - shape processing', 'pure iron - shape processing - carburizing', and 'pure iron - shape processing - carburizing - decarburizing.' All of the flat iron axes were produced by forging, and most of them were made by beating the pure iron into their shapes. In particular, a number of the flat iron axes were reinforced through a carburizing process after shaping the iron. This appears as steel products forming the basis of the steel industry at the time were commonly used as an intermediary material or currency. On the other hand, it was commonly found in all samples that the hardening was not performed after shaping or carburizing. Since the microstructure of the flat iron axes made of pure iron contained a large number of impure inclusions and the result of analyzing the components of the non-metal inclusions showed characteristics of slag which contains a mixture of glass phase and wustite, it is possible that low-temperature reduction was used in the refining process.

  • Based on the airborne measurement results over a coal fired power plant and steel work in Dangjin city, SO2 emission amounts of each site are estimated (top-down emission). Airborne measurements were carried out on May-June and October-November 2019. The estimated SO2 emission in 2019 for the power plant was 1502.1 kg/hr and that for the steel work was 2850.5 kg/hr, higher as much as a factor of 2.5 and 2.0, respectively, than the emission amounts provided by both facilities (bottom-up emission). The outcomes strongly illustrates that well designed airborne observations can serve a quantitative diagnostic tool for bottom-up emission estimates. Further research direction to improve the reliability of the top-down emission estimates is suggested.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the emissions characteristics of total particulate matter (TPM), fine dust (PM10, PM2.5), and gaseous pollutants (SOx, NOx) in iron and steel manufacturing facilities in order to investigate emissions factors suitable for domestic conditions. Methods: Total particulate matter (TPM), fine dust (PM10, PM2.5), and gas phase materials were investigated at the outlet of electric arc furnace facilities using a cyclone sampling machine and a gas analyzer. Results: The concentrations of TPM ranged from 1.64 to 3.14 mg/Sm3 and the average was 2.47 mg/Sm3. Particulate matter 10 (PM10) averaged 1.49 mg/Sm3 with a range of 0.92 to 1.99 mg/Sm3, and the resulting ratio of PM10 to TPM was around 60 percent. PM2.5/PM10 ranged from 33.7 to 47.9% and averaged 41.6%. Sulfur oxides (SOx) were not detected, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) averaged 6.8 ppm in the range of 5.50 to 8.67 ppm. TPM emission coefficients per product output were in the range of 0.60 to 1.26 g/kg, 0.13 to 0.79 g/kg for PM10 and 0.12 to 0.36 g/kg for PM2.5, and showed many differences from the emissions coefficients previously announced. An emissions coefficient for NOx is not currently included in the domestic notices, but the results were calculated to be 0.42 g/kg per product output. Conclusions: Investigation and research on emissions coefficients that can reflect the characteristics of various facilities in Korea should be conducted continuously, and the determination and application of unique emissions coefficients that are more suitable for domestic conditions are needed.

  • Residents in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, in which large-scale emissions facilities such as coal-fired power plants and steel mills are concentrated, are very much concerned about their health despite the local government's aggressive efforts to improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gases. To understand the impact of coal-fired power plants and external factors on local air pollution, the origins of local pollutants were investigated using stable carbon isotopes that are generally used as tracers of the provenance of fine or ultrafine dust. The origins of the pollutants were analyzed with the data library, built using the seasonally measured data for the two separate locations selected considering the distance from the coal-fired power plant and the analysis of previous studies, and with the back trajectory analysis. As a result of analyzing stable isotope ratios, the tendency of high concentration was found in the order of winter > spring > fall > summer. According to the data matching with the library, the mobile pollutants and open-air incineration had a relatively higher impact on the local air pollution. It is believed that this study, as a pilot study, should focus on securing the reliability of the study results through continuous monitoring and data accumulation.

  • The study performed long-term performacne evaluation on the hot mix asphalt using the steel slag aggregates and Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP). The laboratory comparative evaluation was conducted between conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) which is entitled WC-2 and HMA containing steel slag and RAP which is entitled ES WC-2(R). Dynamic stability test, dynamic modulus test, and fatigue crack test were conducted during the comparative evaluation process. The dynamic stability test result showed that ES WC-2(R) was 140% higher than WC-2. It is noted that ES WC-2(R) showed no inflection point whereas WC-2 showed inflection point during the dynamic stability test which implies ES WC-2(R) has the higher moisture susceptability than WC-2. The dynamic modulus of ES WC-2(R) were 342.3%, 486.7%, and 350.0% higher than WC-2 at medium temperature of 21℃, low temperature of -10℃, and high temperature of 38℃ respectively. The test result showed that rutting resistance of ES WC-2(R) is higher than WC-2 at all temperature spectrum. The fatigue resistance of ES WC-2(R) were 31.7%, 325.3%, 899.9% higher at low stress level, medium stress level, and high stress level, respectively. The test result showed that ES WC-2(R) is higher than WC-2 at all stress levels. Based on the laboratory comparative evaluation, The in-situ scale Accelerated Pavement Test (APT) was conducted comparing WC-2 and WC-2(R). APT found that the rutting resistance of WC-2(R) was 45% higher than WC-2.

  • A study on the Joseon Dynasty's furnace walls, excavated from south Korea, was conducted to identify the correlations and differences of the furnace walls found in Jeolla and Gyeongsang regions. Three ruins in the Jeolla region and two in the Gyeongsang region were selected for the analysis. The results showed a layer change depending on the degree of plasticity and difference in the number of layers and particle phase. Furthermore, although the temperature to be subjected to heat was divided into 1300℃ and 1100℃, it was not a phenomenon that appeared according to the region. Additionally, analysis result of major components revealed that the TiO2 content of most samples does not exceed 1wt%, This means that the furnace did not smelt iron sand or smelted it into low-titanium sand. This study indicated a slight similarity between the furnace walls found in the two regions, and the correlation was determined based on the nature of the ruins, raw materials of the metals ores, and composition of the raw materials constituting the furnace walls.

  • Atmospheric pollutant emissions, mainly exhaust gas emissions from vessels, and the resultant social costs of pollution in the Korean harbor cities of Incheon, Mokpo, Gwangyang, Busan and Ulsan, are examined in this study, and the need for an emissions reduction plan is highlighted. Busan had several vessels entering its port, while Mokpo had few vessels, yet the vessels emission contribution was high in both the cities. Ulsan had world-class heavy-chemical industries, Gwangyang had steel mills and Incheon had a manufacturing industry and more vessels entering its port than Mokpo, yet the emission contribution was low in these cities. By calculating exhaust gas emissions from the vessels, it was found that CO2 was the highest, followed by NOx and SOx. By vessel type, Busan, Ulsan, and Incheon had more oil tank vessels, Gwangyang had more cargo vessels, and Mokpo had more ferries. As a result of social cost, Busan paid the highest, while the highest emission was PM. The use of low-sulfur oil can directly reduce PM and, SOx emissions and indirectly reduce NOx emissions. However, in order to reduce high CO2 emissions, only low-sulfur oil will not help. Therefore, the study suggested the need for reduction plan that use of fossil fuels, by using alternative maritime power (AMP).

  • Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GBFS) is produced in the manufacture process of pig-iron and shows a similar particle formation to that of natural sea sand and also shows light weight, high shear strength, well permeability, and especially has a latent hydraulic property by which GBFS is solidified with time. Therefore, when GBFS is used as a backfill material of quay or retaining walls, the increase of shear strength induced by the hardening is presumed to reduce the earth pressure and consequently the construction cost of harbor structures decreases. In this study, using the model sand box (50 cm$\times$50 cm$\times$100 cm), the model wall tests were carried out on GBFS and Toyoura standard sand, in which the resultant earth pressure, a wall friction and the earth pressure distribution at the movable wall surface were measured. In the tests, the relative density was set as Dr=25, 55 and 70% and the wall was rotated at the bottom to the active earth pressure side and followed by the passive side. The maximum horizontal displacement at the top of the wall was set as ${\pm}2mm$. By these model test results, it is clarified that the resultant earth pressure obtained by using GBFS is smaller than that of Toyoura sand, especially in the active-earth pressure.

  • In this study, students' thoughts were searched according to the types of experiments related to the "law of definite proportions" in 9th grade science textbooks. The most common four types of experiments in textbooks were selected and analyzed for this study. It was found that the experiments needed various preconceptions and complex inferring process by students. But most of the students could not catch the concept understanding desired from the experiments. They just perceived simple observation from their senses. These phenomena were common regardless of types of experiments. These means that the level of preconceptions and inferring process for the interpretation of the experimental data did not match with students' level of thoughts. The goals of the experiments in science textbooks are to increase students' inquiry ability, and to acquire science concepts by themselves from the experiment results. But if the contents of experiments are not suitable to students' understanding level, the educational effects of the performance of these experiments were not positive. Therefore, these experiments need contents revisions for students to acquire the concept related to the "law of definite proportions" by themselves.
