  • The elevated water storage tanks highly crowded in the western region in Jeju island is an important landmark of Jeju island. This study examines the reasons that the elevated water storage tanks appeared in a high density. After examination, this study found that the elevated water storage tanks formed under the influences of climate, hydrogeologic structure, soil, topography and land use. In particular, the elevated water storage tanks in Jeju are closely related to the crapping system with which water has to be supplied using sprinkler due to well drained soil and hydrogeological characteristics. The results of this study show that elevated water storage tank landscape in the western region of Jeju island is an agricultural landscape particularly made in the course of farmers' adaptation to the natural environment of Jeju island.

  • Components and physiological activity of crops are strongly affected by the natural environments of the growth regions. In this study, we carried out soil analysis and determined the allicin, alliin, total pyruvate, total phenol and flavonoid, and reducing sugar contents of garlic from garlic-cultivating regions in the eastern and western portions of Jeju Province. Significantly higher contents of macronutrients were found in the soil and garlic from the eastern region of Jeju compared to western region, but micronutrients were higher in the western region than eastern region. In addition, the alliin and total phenolic contents were higher in the western region than in the eastern region. Also, allicin, total pyruvate, total flavonoid content, and ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the eastern region samples were higher than those of the western region in Jeju. This study promotes our understanding of the different components of garlic according to the cultivation regions of Jeju.

  • Agricultural activities of western Jeju island has suffered from saltwater intrusion seasonally. Objectives of this study are to prove the occurrence of saltwater intrusion in the coastal aquifer and to consider a management plan using MODFLOW-family code SEAWAT model. Model results show that the saltwater-freshwater interface intrudes inland only a few meters and that upconing phenomenon is rather the cause of the severe disaster of the agricultural water contamination. This study selected Gosan area as a representative site to estimate optimal groundwater development regulation against upconing by seasonal pumping for agriculture. The suggested optimal groundwater development estimation method considers the groundwater levels of representative monitoring wells for regulatory alarms.

  • This study evaluated the hydraulic factors contributing to the decreasing groundwater levels across Jeju island. Time-series data for groundwater level, precipitation, and groundwater usage and information on land use were acquired, and the correlations among them were analyzed to evaluate the causes of the decreasing groundwater. The effects of precipitation and groundwater usage on the fluctuations of groundwater level were quantified using response surface analysis and sensitivity analysis, and methods for groundwater quantity management by region were proposed. The results showed that the rate of groundwater decrease in the western region was larger than that in the eastern region. For the eastern region, the influence of precipitation was large and the rate of decrease in the groundwater level was relatively small. The geological formation of this part of the island and continuous seawater intrusion suggest that although the absolute amount of groundwater extracted for use was large, the decrease in the groundwater level was not seen to be great due to an increase in pressure by seawater intrusion. Overall, precipitation and groundwater usage had the greatest effect on the amount of groundwater in the western region, and thus their data would be most useful for informing groundwater management, whereas other factors (e.g., sea level and the location of the freshwater-seawater transition zone) must be considered when understanding Jeju's eastern region. As the characteristics of groundwater level fluctuations in the eastern and western regions are distinct, an optimal management plan for each region should be proposed to ensure the efficient management of groundwater quantity.

  • In this study, we tried to define the origin of fine-grained sediments in Southwestern Cheju Island Mud (SWCIM) using principal component analysis. We used relative clay mineral compositions using 138 marine surface sediments, 4 Huanghe sediments and 3 Changjiang river sediments by the semi-quantitative X-ray diffraction analysis. We made bioplot diagram using R program with principal component 1 and component 2 because they might contain more than 90% of all data. Although the distribution pattern of each clay minerals in SWCIM is so intricate, smectite and kaolinite contents are high in the west region, but illite and chlorite contents are rich in the east region. In the biplot, the east region of SWCIM distribute around Changjiang river, whereas west region of SWCIM disperse around Huanghe. Our results might reveal that west region of SWCIM is mainly originated by Huanghe, but east region of SWCIM by Changjiang River.

  • Significant differences in annual precipitates on Jeju island have been reported depending on the location. We collected soil samples from east and west areas of Jeju Island to identify yeasts by plating on yeast peptone dextrose plates and subsequent analysis for the polymerase chain reaction amplified D1/D2 region of 26S rDNA of colonies. As a result, 20 yeast strains of 12 species were isolated from 7 different sampling sites in east area and 13 yeast strains of 6 species from 5 different sampling sites in west area. Some differences in yeast flora were observed depending on the sample collection sites having different annual precipitates.
