The study on the archaeological bronze artifacts in Korea has prompted much research through the analysis to determine the production technology. However, research on the smelting technology is not enough. This is associated with the lack of copper smelting and refining remains and literatures were not found. Copper smelting technology was probably developed independently, but also can not ignore the effect of the another country. Thus, many studies compared to estimate the country's copper smelting technology. In this study, smelting technology was provided and compared through the literature and smelting sites study of the domestic and foreign.
It is to review the current status of magnesium smelting. Raw materials for magnesium source, worldwide production and producers of metallic magnesium, Korean magnesium markets and some important extraction technologies were reviewed. The magnesium extraction technologies were described according to the two major reduction methods: the fused salt electrolysis and the thermal reduction method. Also, the research on the extraction of magnesium from magnesite which has been being carried out at KIGAM was briefly introduced with discussing the related topics on the recycling of the chlorine and the hydrogen chloride gas used in the process.
In order to review the technological modulus of the recycling of urban mine resources and non-ferrous smelting process in Korea, key point of recycling process, physical separation, non-ferrous smelting process, unit operation for the recycling technology, recycling process of LS-Nikko Copper and Korea Zinc were studied. Finally, metal recycling processes of the typical non-ferrous smelters in Japan such sa DOWA Holdings and JX Holdings were compared with those of LS-Nikko Copper and Korea Zinc.
Presently, most of gold is smelted from gold concentrates and anode slimes. Anode slimes are by-products of nonferrous smelters such as lead and copper. In addition, gold is recovered from waste dental and medical materials, waste gold coating solution, and waste printed circuit boards (waste PCBs). The smelting method of gold from gold concentrates and various wastes containing high concentration of gold is largely divided into chlorination, cyanidation, and amalgamation methods. For the anode slimes, electrolysis method is usually used, which largely consists of roasting, high temperature melting and electrolysis processes. Also, various wastes containing low concentration of gold are mainly treated by pyrometallursical processes. In the paper, current status on gold smelting technology is reviewed, and a novel process for gold smelting which is researched in the recent is briefly introduced.
This study is about the applicability of copper slag as the ground improvement material. By the geo-technical characteristics of the copper slag and by the effect of consolidation and under drainage condition, it is proved that the copper slag can be used for ground improvement material as substitution for sand. As a result of laboratory tests, it was shown that the permeability of the copper slag was similar to that of sands under the vertical drainage condition. In addition, the copper slag showed higher critical hydraulic gradient than that of sand under up-ward vertical flow state. The copper slag has potential safety against piping and it has internal stability of particles. The conclusion is that the copper slag is suitable for drainage and filter material.

This study examines the properties of high-fluidity concrete after adding copper slag as a mineral admixture. For this purpose, the replacement ratio of cement to copper slag was varied to 0, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%. A slump flow test, reach time slump flow of 500 mm, and a U-Box and O-lot test were conducted on the fresh concrete. The compressive strength of the hardened concrete was determined at 3, 7, 14 and 28 days. According to the test results, the workability, compaction, and compressive strength of the high-fluidity concrete increased when replacing 30% of the cement with copper slag. These parameters decreased for all material ages with more than 30% copper slag, which was the optimal mixture ratio.

It is estimated that over 2 million tons of non-ferrous wastes are generated after refining. Up to now, most researches were focused on extracting precious metals and there were very few research on the utilization of the slag byproduct. In this study, we studied to evaluate whether copper slag could be used as aggregates in concrete. Fresh mortar were evaluated on the particle size and replacement ratio of the copper slag with river-sand. Experimental results indicated that flow, air content and drying shrinkage of concrete varied with particle size, which confirmed that proper classification of copper slag is very important. And, setting time and unit weight of the concrete increased with replacement ratio. When particle size of the slag was similar to the river-sand, concrete with copper slag showed slump, air content, setting time, drying shrinkage and unit weight became larger compared to the concrete using river-sand only. Therefore, it is believed that proper classification and replacement ratio should be optimized for the effective use of slag in concrete.

This study was conducted to build up the inventories of Pb isotopic compositions of major Pb pollution sources in South Korea. Since non-ferrous metal smelters are one of major anthropogenic sources, two smelters for zinc, each one of smelter for lead and copper were selected for the study. The Pb concentrations and isotopic compositions of metal ores, wastewater, sludge, metal rod and produced sulfuric acid were analysed to understand the Pb isotopic patterns in environment. The isotopic ratio, $^{206}Pb/^{207}Pb$, of zinc ores from zinc smelter were in the range of 1.179~1.198 and the ratio of waste, flue gas and products samples were 1.105~1.147. This results implied that the isotopic patterns of output samples showed mixing patterns between two distinct metal ore soerces. In 2011, major importing countries of zinc ore were Australia, Peru and Mexico. Thus Pb isotopic patterns from zinc smelter is originated from the mixing patterns between less radiogenic Australian ores and more radiogenic South America's ores. Lead smelters also showed the same mixing patterns with those of zinc smelters. However copper smelter showed same Pb isotopic patterns with more radiogenic South America's ores.
Bayer process is based on the extraction of aluminium trihydroxide from bauxite. The process is operated with the several criteria such as primary crystal size, particle size distribution and yield etc.. In this study basing on the previous results, an investigation on the effect of chemical grade and smelting grade aluminium trihydroxide precipitation condition were undertaken. As a result, particle size was 42∼44${\mu}$m form chemical grade product and 74∼77${\mu}$m for smelting grade product. The yield and solubility by acid of chemical grade product was higher than smelting grade product. The attrition index of smelting grade product was lower than that of other commercial product because primary crystal size of the smelting grade product was small.
