  • Data from beam-based bond tests for FRP bars in the literature were collected and regression analyses were conducted for the data of splitting failure. Average bond strengths obtained from splice tests were found to be lower and more affected by C/$d_b$ values than average bond strengths from anchorage tests, indicating needs of new design equation for the splice length of FRP bars based on the data of splice tests only. In addition, the variation of bond strengths was greater than that of tensile strengths of FRP bars and, therefore, a new safety factor should be involved for the design equation. Five percent fractile coefficients were used to develop the design equations based on the assumption that load and resistance factors for FRP reinforced concrete structures are same to the factors for steel reinforced concrete structures. The proposed design equations give economical and reliable lengths for development and splice of FRP bars. The proposed equation for splice provides shorter lengths than the ACI 440 equation in case of C/$d_b$ of 3.0 or greater. Because FRP bars are expected to be used in slabs and walls exposed to weather with thick cover and large spacing between bars, the proposed equation gives optimal splice lengths.

  • The objective of this study was to propose a development length equation for bottom and top GFRP bars. Including the bottom and top GRPP bars, a total of 104 modified pullout tests were completed. The test variables were embedment length (15, 30, 45db), net cover thickness (0.5~2.0db), different GFRP bar types, and bar diameters (10, 13, 16mm). The average bond stresses were determined based on the modified pullout test results. Two variable linear regression analyses were performed on the results of the average bond stresses. Utilizing the 5% fractile concept, a conservative development length design equation was derived. The design equation of the development length for bottom and top GFRP bars was proposed and the design equation derived in this study was compared to the ACI 440.1R-06 committee equation.

  • GFRP rebar with ribs resemble those of deformed steel rebar was developed in 2005. It was reported that ribs of the GFRP rebar were sheared off due to the lower shear strength of polymer. In this study, the basic development length of the GFRP rebar was investigated through pull-out tests, models specified in ACI440.1R-03 and -06, and empirical model derived by Cosenza et al. (2002). As a results of pull-out tests, the critical embeddment length, which is defined as the length when failure mode is changed from pull-out to bar fracture, was 20 times of bar diameter for GFRP rebar and was 15 times for steel rebar. It is believed that the basic development of the GFRP rebar is 21 times of bar diameter, which is determined from the application of average bond strength into the model equation specified in ACI440.1R-03. Compared to the model equation in ACI440.1R-06, that in ACI440.1R-03 is recommendable for design purpose. The Cosenza et al.'s model underestimates the basic development length of the GFRP rebar.

  • The design of anchorage zone in a post-tensioned member has been started from the evaluation of the ultimate resisting capacity as well as the maximum bursting stress developed, and a lot of design codes including AASHTO and PTI describe their design equations to determine the bearing strength of concrete at the anchorage zone. However, these equations usually give conservative results because their derivation is based on the simple anchorage with a wide bearing plate in the surface without any additional consideration for the load transfer mechanism through transverse ribs on the anchorage. To assess the influence of geometric parameters related to the transverse ribs on the resisting capacity of anchorage block, experiments and analysis are conducted. After verifying the validity of numerical model conducted through correlation studies between experimental and analytical results, parametric studies with changes in the transverse ribs are followed and design recommendations for the anchorage block are suggested from the numerical results obtained.

  • Ultra-High-Performance Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (SUPER Concrete) exhibits improved compressive and tensile strengths far superior to those of conventional concrete. These characteristics can significantly reduce the cross sectional area of the member and the anchorage strength of a headed bar is expected to be improved. In this study, the anchorage strengths of headed bars with $4d_b$ or $6d_b$ embedment length were evaluated by simulated exterior beam-column joint tests where the headed bars were used as beam bars and the joints were cast of 120 or 180 MPa SUPER Concrete. In all specimens, the actual yield strengths of the headed bars over 600 MPa were developed. Some headed bars were fractured due to the high anchorage capacity in SUPER Concrete. Therefore, the headed bar with only $4d_b$ embedment length in 120 MPa SUPER Concrete can develop a yield strength of 600 MPa which is the highest design yield strength permitted by the KCI design code. The previous model derived from tests with normal concrete and the current design code underestimate the anchorage capacity of the headed bar anchored in SUPER Concrete. Because the previous model and the current design code do not consider the effects of the high tensile strength of SUPER Concrete. From a regression analysis assuming that the anchorage strength is proportional to $(f_{ck})^{\alpha}$, the model for predicting anchorage strength of headed bars in SUPER Concrete is developed. The average and coefficient of variation of the test-to-prediction values are 1.01 and 5%, respectively.

  • Bearing stress near anchor plates is usually very high due to prestressing force in anchorage zone of concrete structure used post-tensioned prestressed method. In order to effective utilization of cross section and crack control, appropriate size of anchorage plates should be used to prevent crack initiation and failure of concrete structures eventually. This study aims to suggest equation for effective area of bearing plate of rectangle type and circular type by Highway Bridge Design Specification and PTI etc. A shape factor according to bearing plate shape is suggested based on numerical analysis, and it can be used suitability for design of special anchorage plate dimension.

  • In RC structure, sufficient anchorage of reinforcement is necessary for the member to produce the full strength. Generally, conventional standard hook is used for the reinforcement's anchorage. However, the use of standard hook results in steel congestion, making fabrication and construction difficult. Mechanical anchor offers a potential solution to these problems and may also ease fabrication, construction and concrete placement. In this paper, the required characteristics and the design considerations of mechanical anchor were studied. Also, the mechanical anchor was designed according to the requirements. To investigate the pull-out behavior and properness of mechanical anchorage, pull-out tests were performed. The parameters of tests were embedment length, diameter of reinforcement, concrete compressive strength, and spacing of reinforcements. The strengths of mechanical anchor were consistent with the predictions by CCD method. The slip between mechanical anchor and concrete could be controlled under 0.2mm. Therefore, the mechanical anchor with adequate embedment could be used for reinforcement's anchorage. However, it was observed that the strength of mechanical anchors with short spacing of reinforcements was greatly reduced. To apply the mechanical anchor in practice (e.g. anchorage of the beams reinforcements in beam-column joint), other effects that affect the mechanical anchor mechanism, such as confinement effect of adjacent member from frame action or effects of shear reinforcement, should be considered.

  • An experimental study has been carried out to examine development length effects for high strength headed deformed bars. Current design codes limit the specified yield strength of headed bars to 400 MPa. Such the limit is due to the lack of experimental studies on headed bars made of high strength materials. Thus a test program was planed with headed bars with the yield strength of 600 MPa. The threaded head type with head shapes of round plate and circular cone was selected in this study. The experimental variables were development length, number of bars, and head shape. Specimens were classified into L-type and S-type depending on the development length. The development length of L-type was computed according to the design code without considering the limit. S-type specimens had shorter development lengths than the L-type. Further classification was made depending on the shape of heads. A-types have the head shape of round plate and B-types have the shape of circular cone. Three L-type specimens were fabricated with the variable of number of bars (1, 2, and 3). Four specimens for each of SA and SB types were made with development lengths of 50%, 45%, 40%, and 35% compared with L-type. Pullout tests was carried out with 11 specimens. The test results were compared with computed strengths with the design code equations (Appendix II). Based the current studies, it can be said that high strength headed deformed bars used in this study be able to provide such strengths computed with the current design code without considering the yield strength limit.

  • The development length equations of the GFRP rebars are suggested based on the pullout tests performed in this study. A total of 48 pullout and modified pullout tests were completed. Test variables included embedment length (L=10, 15, 20, and $30d_b$), vertical and horizontal installation of the rebars, height of the rebars (H=100 and 300 mm), and cover thickness $(C=2{\sim}5d_b)$. D13 GFRP rebars domestically developed were used in the experimental program. The average of the bond strength of all vertically installed GFRP rebars was 6.39 MPa with a 5% fractile of 4.63 MPa. A basic development length equation was derived that resulted in an equation equivalent to the one proposed in the ACI 440.1R-03. Careful reevaluation of the bond strength using the modified pullout test indicated that a modification of the design equation was necessary so that the basic development length increases by 11%. The top bar effect of the horizontally installed rebars as well as the effect of the cover thickness were determined and included in the set of suggested equations. Since the current equations were derived from testing rebars embedded in relatively low strength concrete $(f_{ck}=20{\sim}24MPa)$, they result in conservative development lengths when applied to bars embedded in higher strength concretes.
