  • An aircraft component can only be mounted on an aircraft if it has been certified to have a structural robustness under flight load conditions. Among the major components of the aircraft, a pylon is a structure that connects external equipment such as an engine, and external attachments with the main wing of an aircraft and transmits the loads acting on it to the main structure of the aircraft. In civil aircraft, when there is an incident of fire in the engine area, the pylon prevents the fire from spreading to the wings. This study presents the results of structural static tests performed to verify the structural robustness of a fuel pylon used to mount external fuel tank in an aircraft. In the main text, we present the test set-up diagram consisting of test fixture, hydraulic pressure unit, load control system, and data acquisition equipment used in the structure static test of the fuel pylon. In addition, we introduce the software that controls the load actuator, and provide a test profile for each test load condition. As a result of the structural static test, it was found that the load actuator was properly controlled within the allowable error range in each test, and the reliability of the numerical analysis was verified by comparing the numerical analysis results and the strain obtained from the structural test at the main positions of the test specimen. In conclusion, it was proved that the fuel pylon covered in this study has sufficient structural strength for the required load conditions through structural static tests.

  • This study deals with the prediction of crack propagation in concrete mortar subjected to static and dynamic load. Total 54 CLWL-DCB(Crack-line-loaded-double-cantilever beam) concrete mortar specimens were tested to measure crack growth using ASTM 561-80. Main variables were sand to cement ratio and water to cement ratio. The resulting load(P)-COD(Crack Opening Displacement; $2V_1$) curves and COD-CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement; $2V_2$) curves were analyzed to calculate effective crack length and physical crack length by way of ASTM 561-80 proposed. Replica crack length were also obtained directly during the test. The differences in crack propagation between under static load and under dynamic load were investigated.

  • In this study, static loading tests were performed on H-beam specimens to assess the static behavior of H-beam prestressed with multi-stepwise thermal prestressing method (TPSM). The amount of induced thermal prestress and connection type were differentiated among the 400-mm-high and 6,000-mm-long H-beam specimens to evaluate their effect on the behavior of the beams. From the experimental results, it between the H-beam and the cover-plate increased in yielding load by 13~18%, whereas stiffness increased by 27~34%. In case of specimens with both bolting and welding connection, yie lding load increased by 18~29% and stiffness increased by 43~51%. Multi-stepwise initial stress distribution was also observed from the prestressed specimens, verifying the effectiveness of the multi-stepwise TPSM. By application of the multi-stepwise TPSM, a significant increase in yielding load and stiffness can be achieved, hence increasing sectional and prestressing efficiencies.

  • The present study investigates the influences of vehicle induced loads on the thermal buckling behavior of straight and curved continuous welded rail (CWR) tracks. Quasi-static loads model is assumed to determine the uplift region, which occurs due to the vertical track deflection induced by wheel loads of vehicle. The lateral loads of vehicle induced by weight, the speed, the superelevation and curvature of track, and other dynamic vehicle track interaction, are included in the ratio of lateral to vertical vehicle load. Parametric numerical analyses are perfomed to calculate the upper and lower critical buckling temperatures of CWR tracks, and the comparison between the results of this work and the previous results without vehicle is also included.

  • Damage detection methods using structural tests can be divided into two methods, i.e., static and dynamic. The static methods which use the stiffness properties of the structure are simpler than the dynamic methods. However, static approaches are very sensitive to the displacement measurement noises and modeling errors. The dynamic methods also have limitations in acquiring the natural frequencies and mode shapes of the high frequencies. In this study, a method for the structural damage assessment using sensitivity matrices is developed, in which the drawbacks of the static and dynamic methods can be compensated. Based on the measurement data for the static displacements and dynamic modal properties, the damage locations and the degree of damage are determined using the presented sensitivity matrix method. The efficiency of the proposed method has been examined through numerical simulation studies on truss type structures.

  • The alignment of the prosthetics is very important in an amputee's gait. In the present study. a static prosthesis-alignment device was developed. It consisted of a force plate with four load cells, a laser beam controlled by a step motor, and a control part programmed by PCBASIC. Using the static prosthesis-alignment device, we measured the distance between the load line and various joints of 24 normal volunteers in three standing postures. such as neutral, forward leaning, and backward leaning. Only neutral postures were evaluated on four trans-tibial amputees. The load line for the normal person's neutral position located anterior to the ankle, the knee, and the greater trochanter, but posterior to the shoulder joint. Forward and backward leaning of the normal person resulted in a significant anterior and posterior movements of the load line, respectively. The load line for the amputated side of the trans-tibial amputee also located anterior to the ankle, the extremity prostheses, providing a good relative locations of the load line with respect to various joints.

  • This paper investigates the effect of 3-dimensional FE models to evaluation results of jointed concrete pavements which is back-calculated by AREA method. Sensitivity of 3-dimensional FE models developed to simulate the behavior of real jointed concrete pavement are analyzed after compared with 2-dimensional FE models using ILLISLAB. In comparison with 2-dimensional models, influence of concrete contraction under loading plate and base layer on surface deflections is more than that of loading configuration. Deflections at 3-dimensional model between linear and nonlinear temperature distribution under same temperature difference are similar, but noticeable differences are investigated in low elastic modulus of foundations. Dynamic deflections under loading plate are larger than static deflections in high elastic modulus of foundation, but smaller in low elastic modulus. Lower dynamic modulus of subgrade reactions are backcalculated by dynamic deflections than by static deflections. But reverse trend is investigated in the backcalculated elastic modulus of concrete which describes trends of the field backcalculation values calculated from AREA method.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate static elastoplastic behaviour and estimate ultimate resistance capacity of a high-rise apartment shear wall system subjected to a vertical distribution of lateral loading along the height. A typical 25-story two unit plan apartment is selected as a representive model. For the analysis, the pushover analysis is adopted to estimate initial elastic stiffness, post-yielding stiffness and story shear yield resistance level on each story of the structure through three-dimensional nonlinear analysis program-CANNY. In the result of elastoplastic analysis, it is observed that the yield strength of building structures is 1.6 times larger than required lateral design strength.

  • As concrete structures are getting larger, higher, longer, and specialized, it is more required to develop steel fiber concrete and apply to the real world. In this research, it is aimed to have fatigue strength examined, varying the steel fiber content by 0%, 0.75%, 1.00%, 1.25%, by experimental study of Two-spans Beam with Steel Fibrous with repeated loads. The ultimate load and the initial load of flexural cracking were measured by static test. In addition, the load versus strain relation, load versus strain relation, load versus deflection relation, crack pattern and fracture mode by increasing weight was observed. On the other hand, the crack propagation and the modes of fracture according to cycle number and the relation of cycle loading to deflection relation and strain relation was observed by fatigue test. As the result of fatigue test, Two-spans Beam without Steel Fibrous was failed at 60~70% of the static ultimate strength and it could be concluded that fatigue strength to two million cycle was around 67.2% by S-N curve. On the other hand, that with Steel Fibrous was failed at 65~85% of the static ultimate strength and it could be concluded fatigue strength to two million cycle around 71.7%.
