Recently a lot of researches have been conducted on the progressive collapse of structures which is the total collapse of structures initiated by localized damage. Most of the previous studies on the field of progressive collapse have followed deterministic approach without considering uncertainty involved in design variables, which results in unknown reliability of the analysis results. In this study the sensitivity analyses are carried out with design variables such as yield strength, live load, damping ratio, and elastic modulus on the vertical deflection of the joint from which a column is suddenly removed. The Monte Calro simulation, tornado diagram method, and the first order second moment method(FOSM) are applied for the sensitivity study. According to the nonlinear static analysis results, the vertical deflection is most affected by the variation of yield strength of beams. The nonlinear dynamic analyses show that the behaviour of model structures is highly sensitive to variation of the yield strength of beams and the structural damping ratio.

In this paper, the factors affecting the dynamic characteristics of a polyurethane spring restoring disk bearing are analysed to predict the dynamic behavior of the bearing. The prediction results and the test results are compared. The Young's modulus of the polyurethane spring, which varies according to strain of spring and the friction coefficient, of PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene), which varies according to the velocity and pressure of PTFE, are considered as the factors influencing the dynamic characteristics. W-PTFE virgin products are used and polyurethane springs are produced for the tests. The equation related to changing the friction coefficient and the modulus of elasticity are obtained through an inverse estimation of the test results. The estimation results, considering the factors affecting the dynamic characteristics, simulate the test results more appropriately than the estimation without the consideration of those factors.

Current seismic design philosophy for reinforced concrete (RC) structures on energy dissipation through large inelastic defomations. A nonlinear dynamic analysis which is used to represent this behavior is time consuming and expensive, particularly if the computations have to be repeated many times. Therefore, the selection of an efficient yet accurate alogorithm becomes important. The main objective of the present study is to propose a new technique herein called the prediction approach with siffness measure (PASM) method in the convetional direct integration methods, the triangular decomposition of matrix is required for solving equations of motion in every time step or every iteration. The PASM method uses a limited number of predetermined decomposed effective matrices obtained from stiffness states of the structure when it is deformed into the nonlinear range by statically applied cyclic loading. The method to be developed herein will reduce the overall numerical effort when compared to approaches which recompute the stiffness in each time step or iteration.

In the previous study, a simple but effective analysis procedure, named as an Improved Modal Pushover Analysis (IMPA) was proposed to estimates the seismic capacities of multi-span continuous bridge structures, on the basis of the modal pushover analysis which considers all the dynamic modes of a structure. Differently from other previous studies, IMPA maintains the simplicity of the capacity-demand curve method and also gives a better estimation of the maximum dynamic response of a structure. Nevertheless, its applicability has never been approved for multi-span continuous bridges with large differences in the length of their adjacent piers. This paper, accordingly, concentrates on a parametric study to verify the efficiency and limitation in application of IMPA through a correlation study between various analytical models including the Equivalent Single Degree Of Freedom (ESDOF) and Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) usually used in the seismic design of structures. Based on the obtained numerical results, this paper introduces a practical guidance and/or limitation for using IMPA to predict the seismic response of a bridge effectively.

Structural optimization design has been developed with finite element analysis using effective and fast computational technology. Especially topology optimization design has been recently often used since it yields an optimal topology as well as an optimal shape under satisfied constraints. In general in finite element analysis, it is assumed that the structural material properties such as Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio and the variable of applied loading are fixed with obvious values in structure. However practically these values may take uncertainties because of environmental effect or manufactural error of structures. Therefore static or dynamic analysis of the structures may make an error, then finally it may have an influence on qualify of optimal design. In this study, the topology optimization design of structure is carried out using so called the interval finite element method, and the analysis method Is proposed. The results are also validated by comparing with conventional topology optimization results of density distribution method and finite element analysis results. The present method can be used to predict the optimal topology of linear elastostatic structures with respect to structural uncertainty of behavior.

Unbond brace hysteretic dampers are generally used to prevent or decrease structural damage in building structures subjected to strong earthquake by its energy dissipating hysteretic behavior. In the study, a straightforward design procedure for unbond brace hysteretic dampers was developed. The required amount of equivalent damping to satisfy given performance acceptance criteria was obtained conveniently based on the capacity spectrum method without carrying out time-consuming nonlinear dynamic time history analysis. Then the size of the unbond braces is determined from the required equivalent damping. Parametric study has been performed for the design variables such as natural period, yield strength, the stiffness after the first yield stress of the unbond brace. The procedure was applied to 5-story and 10-story steel frames for verification of the proposed method. According to the earthquake time history analysis results, the maximum displacement of the model structure with unbond braces supplied in accordance with the proposed method corresponds well with the given target displacement.

A equivalent stiffness modeling has been performed for extracting the equivalent stiffness properties which are orthotropic elastic model from a large scale wind turbine rotor blade so that structure model can be constructed more simply for the three dimensional static aeroelastic analysis. In order to present the procedure of equivalent stiffness modeling, NREL 5MW class wind turbine rotor having the three stiffness information which are flapewise, edgewise and torsional stiffness was chosen. This method is based on applying unit moment at the tip of the blade as well as fixing all degree of freedom at the blade root and calculating the displacement from the load analysis to obtain the elastic modulus corresponding to equivalent stiffness referred to the NREL reports on blade divided into 5 sections respectively. In addition, one section was divided into 3 parts and the trend functions were used to make the equivalent stiffness model more correctly and quickly. Through the comparison of stiffness between the reference values and calculated values from equivalent stiffness model, the investigation of the accuracy on the stiffness values and the efficiency for constructing the model was conducted.

In this paper, cross-sectional stiffnesses, static stresses, and dynamic natural frequencies are analyzed to examine the structural performance of wind turbine composite blades. The material properties of composite materials are based on room-temperature and radiation curing processes. The cross-sectional stiffnesses of composite blades are calculated by applying a beam theory with solid-profile cross sections. The wind turbine blades are modeled with a finite element program, and static analyses are carried out to check the maximum displacement and stress of the blades. In addition, dynamic analyses are performed to predict the rotating natural frequencies of the composite blades including the effects of centrifugal force. By comparing these analysis results, mainly owing to the material properties of composite materials, an improvement in the structural performance of the blades according to the curing process is investigated.

In this study, transonic/supersonic nonlinear flutter analysis system of a complete aircraft including forced harmonic motion pf control surfaces has been effectively developed using the modified transonic small disturbance (TSD) equation. To consider the nonlinear effects, the coupled time marching method (CTM) combining computational structural dynamics (CFD) has been directly applied for aeroelastic computations. The grid system for a complex full aircraft configuration is effectively generated by the developed inhouse code. Intransonic and supersonic flight regimes, the characteristics of static and dynamic aeroelastic effect has been investigated for a complete aircraft model. Also, nonlinear flutter flight simulations for the forced harmonic motion of control surfaces are practically presented in detail.

The governing equation and force-displacement rotations of a beam-column element on elastic foundation we derived based on variational approach of total potential energy. An exact static and dynamic 4×4 element stiffness matrix of the beam-column element is established via a generalized lineal-eigenvalue problem by introducing 4 displacement parameters and a system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. The structure stiffness matrix is established by the conventional direct stiffness method. In addition the F. E. procedure is presented by using Hermitian polynomials as shape function and evaluating the corresponding elastic and geometric stiffness and the mass matrix. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the beam-column element using exact dynamic stiffness matrix, buckling loads and natural frequencies are calculated for the continuous beam structures and the results are compared with F E. solutions.
