The effect of consumers' needs for uniqueness and pursuit of clothing benefit on bespoke suit purchase intention amongst 20~30-year-old males (20~30대 남성 소비자의 독특성 욕구와 의복추구혜택이 비스포크 정장 구매 의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Modern men are much more interested in their appearance than ever before, as well as showing an increased need for uniqueness in order to construct their own sphere and pursue differentiation from others. Besides, changes in life style and the aesthetic sense are causing men to pursue various kinds of clothing benefits so that they want a suit with characteristics beyond the stereotyped design and style. They have started to be actively engaged in clothing purchases, forming a driving force for the growth of the male suit market. Hence, this study has significance in that it offers data conducive to consumers' custom suit purchase by reviewing data on the present condition of the custom suit market and bespoke suits. In addition, it aims to give a summary on the theoretical bases of preceding studies, including the need for uniqueness, pursuit of clothing benefit and concern for the appearance of male consumers, as well as examining the factors that influence on their bespoke suit purchase intentions. Accordingly, this work intends to construct a basic environment for consumers to approach the custom suit market easily and pave the way for male suit markets through offering marketing data and information that is helpful for custom suit-related markets.

A Study on Men's Suit Purchasing Behavior (Part I) -Focusing on Men in Their 20's∼40's- (남성 정장 구매행동에 관한 연구 (제1보) -20∼40대 남성을 중심으로-)

  • This study was attempted to examine male consumers'suit purchasing Behavior of subdivided groups according to apparel shopping orientation in men's suit purchasing and to suggest basic information applicable to marketing. The sample was taken from 705 men who were aged twenties through forties living in and suburbs. A total of 655 questionnaires were used in the final statistical analysis using factor analysis, reliability test, ANOVA, Duncan test, and X$^2$-test. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The dimensions of apparel shopping orientation were composed of economical, brand/store loyalty, fashion consciousness and convenience shopping orientation. 2. The dimensions of apparel store attributes were composed of atmosphere and service, convenient shopping, fashion and sale promotion, price, quality and reputation. 3. Three groups were classified after group analysis of four factors in male consumers'apparel shopping orientation: group focusing on convenience (47.2%), group focusing enjoyment of shopping(31.0%), and group focusing economic aspects(21.8%). Additionally differences of the three groups were examined according to importance of store attributes, use of information sources, purchasing Behavior, clothing evaluation criteria and demographic variables.

Analysis of Attires and Decorative Features in Formal Context -Emphasis on Formal Attires of Bride and Bridegroom′s Mothers in Families′Wedding photographs- (여성 한복의 형태 및 장식의 변화 분석 -결혼사진에 나타난 신랑, 신부 어머니 복식을 중심으로-)

  • The purposes of the study were to analyze the changes in formal attires and decorative features of middle age Korean women during the last half of 20th century and to find out any significant differences in formal attires according to periods. The study was a documentary research, and data were collected from 344 family wedding photographs by convenient sampling. The statistics used were content analysis, frequency and a time series analysis, and the results were as follows : 1. Four schematic clusters of formal attires were categorized according to skirt(chima) length and width, jacket(jogori) length, motifs and decorative features; simple classic, decorative classic, fashionable, and extravagant fashionable. Simple classic attires were popular until 1960s, the decorative classics were appeared from late 1960s to 1970s, fashionable attires were introduced from the late 1970s and the attires became more luxurious and extravagant until 2000. 2. Color symbolism in couples mothers'attires according to the couples gender - pink or red for the bride's mother and blue or green for groom's mother - was introduced from the late 1970s, and reached the maximum level by the early 1980s but slowly disappeared after the late 1980s. 3. The complete fashion cycle did not exist in the formal attires'change, however, since the Period of data were ranged from 1943 to 2000, the 57 years period may not long enough to measure a complete fashion cycle.

남성의 재킷, 와이셔츠, 넥타이 색의 이미지 지각과 선호도 연구

  • 본 연구의 목적은 재킷, 와이셔츠, 넥타이 색과 지각자의 성별에 따른 남성 정장착용자의 이미지 지각의 차이를 밝히고, 성별 및 연령에 따른 남성 의복의 색 선호도의 차이를 조사하는 데 있었다. 연구방법은 준실험방법이며, 피험자간(between-subjects) 실험설계를 사용하였다. 2$\times$2$\times$2$\times$2의 요인설계로서 지각자의 성별(2), 재킷 색(2), 와이셔츠 색(2), 넥타이 색(2)을 독립변인으로 사용하였다. 재킷 색은 진남색과 회색을 택하였고, 와이셔츠 색은 흰색과 파란색이었으며 넥타이 색은 빨강과 파랑이었다. 이미지 지각을 측정하는 문항은 6개 차원의 7점 양극 형용사 쌍으로 구성된 의미미분척도였으며, 그 차원은 능력, 품위, 활동성, 선호평가, 남성성, 현시성이었다. 피험자는 서울 시내에 거주하는 20, 30대 남녀 각각 132명씩 총 264명이었다. 자료분석은 SPSS 프로그램을 사용하였으며, 통계 분석방법은 Cronbach의 $\alpha$-신뢰도 계수 산출, t-검증, 사원변량분석, 이원변량분석, 일원변량분석과 Duncan의 다중범위검증을 실시하였다.

A Study on Human Sensitivity in Design of Men's suit (신사복 디자인의 감성에 관한 연구)

  • 신사복 정장은 일상의 관습으로 착용되는 가장 중요한 항목으로서, 사무직, 관리 직, 전문직 등의 정신노동자들에 게 폭넓게 수용되는 매우 중요한 의복항목이 다. 따라서 소비자의 감성에 부합되는 신사복 개발을 위해 신사복 디자인에 대한 감성연구가 필요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 신사복 상의 디자인 개발을 위해서 소비자의 감성에 적합한 신사복 상의를 적절하게 표현해 줄 수 있는 감성 어휘를 추출하고 그 인자를 분석하였다. 요인분석 결과,7개 의 요인과 67개 의 감성 어휘 가 채택되었다. 선택된 감성어휘는 인자별로 대별하여 7개의 요인으로 묶어서 대표적인 요인명을 붙인 결과, 요인 1은 품위성 요인. 요인 2는 매력성 요인. 요인 3은 실용성 요인, 요인 4는 체형성 요인. 요인 5는 외관성 요인. 요인 6은 남성미 요인. 요인 7은 활동성 요인이라고 하였다.

주5일 근무제 도입에 따른 의생활 변화에 관한 예측

  • 이와 같은 변화를 종합하여 보자면, 패션의 전반적인 흐름인 캐주얼 웨어와 스포티룩의 확산과 아울러 이러한 흐름이 더욱 세분화된다는 것으로 요약할 수 있겠다. 즉 같은 캐주얼웨어 안에서도 travel wear, town casual, outdoor wear등으로 나누어 질 것이고 또한 스포츠 웨어도 일반적인 체육활동을 위한 의복뿐만 아니라, 특정한 스포츠에 가장 적합한 전문 스포츠웨어가 개발될 것으로 예측된다. 그와 아울러, 정장은 더욱 격식과 품위를 강조하는 쪽으로 진행될 것으로 예상된다. 이러한 변화는 우리 사회의 의생활이 다양화되고 세분화되며, 서구의 TPO(time, place, occasion) 개념에 충실한 상황으로 전개되는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 그러나, 이 모든 예측은 주5일 근무제의 도입에 따라 많은 국민들이 여가활동을 증가할 것이라는 가정을 기반으로 하고 있으며, 따라서 새로운 제도 아래서 오히려 근무나 공부시간을 늘어나는 등의 예상치 못한 변화가 일어나는 경우에는 이런 변화가 일어나기는 어려울 것이다.

The Expected Values of Appearance Management of 20s-30s and 40s-50s Male Consumers on their Men's Suit Buying Behaviors (2030대와 4050대 남성소비자들의 외모관리 기대가치가 남성정장 구매행동에 미치는 영향)

  • This study compares the expected values of appearance management for the suit buying behavior of men in two age groups: (20s-30s and 40s-50s) to investigate the effect of male consumers' expected values in regards to appearance management on the purchase behavior of men's suits between two generations. A survey was carried out with male consumers between the ages of 20 and 50; a total of 135 responses were analyzed by descriptive analysis, factor analysis, a reliability test, an independent samples t-test, MANOVA, ANOVA, and regression analysis. The results of this study were as follows: 1) From a result of the factor analysis on male consumers' expected value of appearance management and the information sources and purchase evaluative criteria for buying men's suits, each of three variance assessments clearly showed factorial structures. 2) There were significant differences between those in their 20s-30s and those in their 40s-50s in terms of male consumers' expected values of appearance management, their information sources, and their purchase evaluative criteria when buying men's suits. 3) As a result of looking at the differences in the effects of expected values of appearance management on men's suit buying behavior according to age (generation), the younger generation in this study showed that men's suit purchasing tendency was affected by the managing appearance factor for internal reasons such as enjoyment and self-satisfaction. On the other hand, the assessment of the older generation revealed that appearance management for external reasons such as showing social power, good human relationships, and conformity influenced their suit purchase behaviors.

A Study on Apparel Product Design Elements according to Image Preference -Applied to Quality Function Deployment Focused on Middle Aged and Aged Women's Formal Wear- (추구의복이미지에 따른 의류제품 디자인 설계품질에 관한 연구 -QFD를 이용한 중.노년층 여성 정장을 중심으로-)

  • The subjects of ttis study were middle-aged women in their 40s$\sim$50s and older women aged 60 and over who were living in Seoul and Kyonggi-do, Korea. Through studying the participants' responses to the questions regarding the attributes of image preference in terms of the levels of satisfaction and importance, the target consumers' demand has been studied. And, they are applied to a QFD Matrix, to find out the relationship between the attributes of product quality and the guidelines of clothing design. For this study, clothing image preference is categorized as three types: fashionable and urbane image, elegant and formal image, comfortable and active image. It has also been found that middle-aged and older women think the clothing that projects fashionable and urbane image needs more improvement that those for other images. To review demands for the clothing image preference attribute of formal suits for middle-aged and older women, the priority of these attributes through QFD Matrix that shows the relationship between the attributes and dress elements emphasized by designers has been examined. In reflecting clothing image preference by consumers for their formal two-piece suits, the most important design elements related to material in order of importance were material type, style, thickness and texture, and those related to color were the number of colors used and coloring type.

A Study on the Scale Development of Clothing Consumption Value for Male Consumers -Focused on the Purchase Behavior in Fashion Multi-brand Store and Tailor Shop- (남성 소비자의 의복 소비가치 척도 개발 연구 -의류편집매장, 맞춤정장매장 구매행동을 중심으로-)

  • This study develops scales to measure clothing consumption values for Korean male consumers. This study conducted qualitative and quantitative research to explore a new clothing consumption value among males as well as investigate empirically the measurement of clothing consumption values. In-depth interviews and focus group interviews were collected for qualitative research on 20 Korean men in their 20s-40s who had experience with 2 types of stores in Korean men's fashion. An analysis of qualitative data based on grounded theory approaches identified 6 factors and 15 items. For the empirical research, the questionnaire which consist of 9 factors and 46 items were developed by the results of grounded theory approaches and prior studies. Final measurement scales were based on 651 data used in exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). All subjects were in their 20s-40s. The result from CFA suggested 4 factors and 18 items with showing acceptable construct validity and discriminant validity. Therefore, this study confirmed that clothing consumption value for Korean male consumer consist of ostentatious and brand value, epistemic and possession value, conditional value, and reasonable value. These constructs will provide critical insight in understanding and segmenting Korean male consumers.

The Effect of Clothing Cues and Perceiver's Self-Monitoring on Perception of Occupational Suitability- (남성정장의 의복단서와 관찰자의 자기모니터링이 직업적합성 지각에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate(1) the effects of clothing cues of 20s young man in business suits on the perception of occupational suitability in an office setting and (2) the effect of Perceiver's self-monitoring and sex on the perception of occupational suitability formed by the function of clothing cues. The experimental design of this study was between-subjects 23 factorial design. The experimental materials developed for the study were a set of stimuli and a response scale. The stimuli consisted of 8 color photographs of a young man wearing business suits which were manipulated at two levels for each of three clothing cues (suit color, suit style, necktie color). Each one of eight sub-samples included 14 subjects from 2 perceiver groups by sex. The questionaires used to measure perceivers' responses to the stimuli were constructed in 12 five-point likert scale representing occupational suitability and self-Monitoring was measured by the self-Monitoring Scale by Gangestad adn Snyder. The subjects consisted of 224 male and female college students in Seoul. The data was processed by ANOVA and MCA(Multiple Classification Analysis). The result were as follows: (1) The Clothing cues of young man in business suits(suit color, suit style) partially influenced the occupational suitability. (2) The perception of occupational suitability formed by the clothing cues of a young man in business suits was partially influenced by the perceiver's self-monitoring and sex. Female high self-monitoring group were more affected by the clothing cues than any other groups.
