  • This study was carried out to investigate the flower yield and quality of Lilium Oriental Hybrids as affected by planting date. In cut flower production experiments, effect of planting date and bulb source was studied in rain shelter houses with 30% shading. Four planting dates compared were May 15, June 5, June 25, and July 15. Bulbs used for cut flower production were either imported or produced domestically. The greatest cut flower yield and quality were obtained from bulbs planted either on May 15 or June 25. Bulbs planted on July 15 produced cut flowers of very poor quality and yield, due to high temperatures during the planting time. Therefore, for planting in July, means other than 30% shading have to be adapted to lower temperature during early growth stage. Although plants from imported bulbs had better growth and cut flower yield as compared to domestic bulbs, there was no significant difference.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the growth characteristics of perilla according to the materials of the seedbed for the development of seedling plug technology suitable for the mechanical transplantation of perilla. Perilla (Perilla frutescens var. japonica Hara) cultivars Deulsaem and Sodam were used in this experiment. The composition ratios of 170 products from 16 companies published in the 'Korean Association of Seedbed Media' homepage were compared according to usage and type, and 11 products that corresponded to the average were selected. The seedbed was classified according to the seedbed for paddy rice as light-weight, semi-weight, and weight, and based on the seedbed for horticulture, as light-weight and ultra-light. The seedlings were placed in 72-cell (semi-automatic), 128-cell (automatic) and 220-cell (automatic) plug trays. We selected 2 light-weight seedbeds of paddy rice and 2 light-weight seedbeds of horticultural products with the highest plant growth. We analyzed plant height and mat formation of the perilla roots. Results showed that the perilla height and mat formation were the best in light-weight seedbeds of paddy rice (product R1). Therefore, light-weight seedbeds of rice (product R1) were suitable for perilla plant transplantation. The estimated major components were vermiculite 41.0%, cocopeat 31.0%, peat moss 5.7%, and red-yellow soil 20.0%. The mechanical transplantation of perilla significantly boosts plant growth and reduces sowing and thinning efforts. However, continuous evaluation of newly introduced, commercial seedbeds is needed.

  • To find out the most effective method of treatments for the induction of sprouting of dormant seed potato pieces for the fall crop production of Irish cobbler, this experiment was carried out with sprout inducing bed and field performance trial. In GA treatments, about 10 days were required to sprout and resulted uniform and thin 3-4 sprouts per tuber piece, but sprouts were slender and rooting was not observed. In Ethrel treatments, 20-25 days were required, and sprouts were inferior than that of GA treatment in uniformity of sprouting, and percentage of rotten pieces and of healthy sprouted tuber pieces, but number of sprouts per tuber pieces was low, being 1-2, and sprouts were short, thick, and healthy, and showed good rooting. In GA and Ethrel mixture treatments, 1-2 more days were required to sprout than GA treatments, but sprouts were relatively healthy, and other sprouting pattern were like that of GA treatments. In Ethylene chlorohydrin and 6-Benzyl-adenine treatments, sprouting was like that of Ethrel treatments, but much more days were required than Ethrel treatments and tendency of severe rotting was observed. Optimum treating methods of promising chemicals found to be 1-2 and 2-5 ppm GA solution, 500 and 1000-2000 ppm Ethrel solution, and 1-2+250-500 and 5+250-500 ppm GA and Ethrel mixture solution for 60 min. treatment of tuber piece and whole-tuber, respectively. Induction of sprouting in dry and hot time resulted severer rotting of tuber pieces during the induction of sprouting and with the advancement of dormancy, being delayed in date of treatment, tendency of promotion of sprouting and rooting was observed. When sprouted tuber piece was transplanted at the same date, yields were in order of Ethrel, GA and Ethrel mixture, and GA treatment, indicating the correlation between yield and healthiness of sprout and rooting status of sprouted tuber piece. In all treatments, earlier transplanting resulted higher yields.

  • This experiment was carried out to clarity the effect of summer softening cultivation on bud yield of Aralia continentalis Kita. Bulbous plant harvested on March 25 and stored in low temperature storage room($0-2^{\circ}C$) were transplanted in May, June, July and August. The bulbous plants were grown under black PE film and 50%(T-2250) silver shading nets. The results obtained are summerized as fallows. Harvesting time in Jul. and Aug. transplanting was 15days and was speeling 5days in May transplanting. The accumulative temperature of whole growth period was about $400^{\circ}C$. But yield of soft stems in June transplanting was 6.64(ton/ha), which was more than others. High temperature induced low-quality of soft stem in transplanting in July. Net income was 18000(1000won/ha) in transplanting in May or June.

  • Effect of seedling type and early transplanting of summer grown seedling on the growth and yield of tomato was investigated to minimize problems caused by legginess of seedling in summer. Grafted seedling, 20 days seedling (young seedling), 40 days seedling, and rooted cutting were raised from July 20 to Sept. 7 and young seedling was transplanted 20 days earlier than other seedling types. Young seedling growth was weaker than other seedling types and fresh weight was only 1/10 of 40 days seedling. Growth of young seedling at 20 days after transplanting was better than other seedling types and fresh weight was 3 times higher than 40 days seedling. Creased stem did not appear and trusses developed faster in young seedling. Total yield and commercial yield were highest in young seedling as 8,535 kg/10a, and 7,575 kg/10a. There is no significant difference among seedling types in fruit quality. This result shows that early transplanting of summer grown seedling is more effective to attain stable growth and yield in tomato.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of crown diameter on plant growth after planting and fruit yield. All nursery plants were classified into three classes: A, > 9 mm; B, 8~9 mm; C, < 8 mm. The A-class nursery plant plot showed better root and plant growth after planting compared to the B-class and C-class nursery plants. The A-class nursery plant plot was 10 days faster in first flowering time then those of the B-class and the C-class. Also, the A-class nursery plant plot was 2~3 days faster in the mean flowering time. The accumulative yield of the A-class nursery plant plot was 481 g per plant, that of the B-class was 445 g, and the C 422 g, which the nursery plant plot of A-class yielded more 8.1% and 13.9% respectively than B-class plot and C-class plot per plant. In early yield of to February; A-class nursery plant plot showed 23.3% higher yield than B-class nursery plant plot, and 39.1% higher the C-class nursery plant.
