The subjects were 116 3rd and 6th grade Sunday school children and their parents in 13 churches in Seoul and Kyunggi Province. Data were analyzed by the sex, age and self-regulation of the children and emotional expressiveness of the parents using two-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results were that mothers showed higher levels of emotional expression than fathers. Positive emotional expression of fathers was related to the self-regulation of sons but not daughters. Positive emotional expression of mothers was related to the self-regulation of daughters but not sons.

  • This study examined the effects on preschooler's social competence of preschooler's emotional regulation strategies and maternal attitude toward child's emotional expressiveness. Subjects were 57 3-to 5-year-old preschoolers, their mothers and 3 teachers in their classes. Data were adapted from the Social Intelligence part of Project Spectrum and analyzed by Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis. Findings were that : (1) preschoolers' positive emotion regulation strategies significantly explained their social competence. (2) Older children showed higher social competence than younger children; the effect of children's age on social competence was more influential than emotional strategies or maternal attitudes. In conclusion, preschooler's emotion regulation strategies are an important factor as their social competence develops with age.

  • This study aims to investigate the differences in burnout, emotional labor strategies, affect intensity, and emotional clarity based on combinations of level of mindfulness and compassion. To achieve this, a total of 137 mental health professionals participated in this study, and they were classified into four groups based on their level of mindfulness and compassion using cluster analysis. Then, the differences among the groups were compared. The results of the multivariate analysis of covariance(MANCOVA) or multivariate analysis of variance(MANOVA) controlling for career experience, showed that the group with high levels of both mindfulness and compassion had the highest levels of positive affect intensity, emotional clarity for self and others, and genuine expression, while having the lowest levels of negative affect intensity, surface acting, and burnout. In comparison to the group with high levels of both mindfulness and compassion, the group with high or low level of either mindfulness or compassion had both positive and negative affect intensity at higher or lower levels. Additionally, they showed lower emotional clarity for self and others, and genuine expression. Conversely, they showed higher levels of surface acting and burnout. The group with low levels of both mindfulness and compassion experienced low levels of positive affect intensity and high levels of negative affect intensity. They also had the lowest levels of emotional clarity for self and others and genuine expression. In addition, they showed that the highest levels of surface acting, and burnout. Based on the results, the study discussed the balanced development of mindfulness and compassion to prevent burnout of professionals in the human service field, including mental health professionals. The implications and limitations of this study were further analyzed in the discussion section, including the direction for future research.

  • The present study tested a hypothesis that mood awareness and emotional expressivity would attenuate the association between academic stress and adjustment. In support of the hypothesis, the present research showed that emotional expressivity moderated the association between academic stress and adjustment among college students. That is, the association was attenuated by emotional expressivity when academic stress was high more than when academic stress was low. Curiously, we also identified an interesting diversion between two factors of mood awareness. Specifically, mood monitoring moderated the negative association between academic stress and adjustment, whereas mood labeling did not. That is, mood monitoring was particularly effective when academic stress was high, but mood labeling showed substantial benefits regardless of the level of academic stress. Overall, the present results suggest that mood awareness (in particular, mood labeling) and emotional expressivity serve as cognitive and behavioral protective factors that can buffer academic stress among college students.

  • The aim of this research was to verify the mediating effects of ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and distress tolerance on the relationship between harm avoidance and depression. A total of 403 university students completed TCI-RS(Temperament and Character Inventory-Revised Short version), AEQ-K(Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire-Korean), DTS (Distress Tolerance Scale) and CES-D(The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale). The results revealed that harm avoidance and ambivalence over emotional expressiveness were positively related with depression, and negatively related with distress tolerance. In addition, the relationship of harm avoidance and depression was successively mediated by ambivalence over emotional expressiveness and distress tolerance. That is, the motivation of emotional expression conflict may have an effect on depression and the distress tolerance would play an important role in therapeutic intervention of depression.

  • This study explored mediating effects of the maternal emotional expressiveness between maternal behavioral inhibition/behavioral activation system and children's emotional intelligence. subjects were 138 4- to 5-year-old preschoolers (92 boys, 46 girls) and their mothers. The maternal behavioral inhibition/behavioral activation system was measured by BIS/BAS(Behavioral Inhibition System/Behavioral Activation System, Carver & White, 1994), maternal emotional expressiveness was measured by the Self-Expressiveness in the Family Questionnaire (Halberstadt, 1995), and children's emotional intelligence was measured by the Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (Lee, 1998). Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis. Results were that maternal positive expressiveness mediated the effects of maternal BIS on children's self-understanding and maternal negative expressiveness mediated the effects of maternal BAS on children's self-regulation.

  • Previous studies on emotion have repeatedly suggested that alexithymia is an important predictor of depression. Therefore, this study examined whether the relationship between these two variables can be moderated by personality factors, focusing on the Big five personality traits. An online survey of 312 college students, including alexithymia, depression, and Big five personality traits (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, and Openness to Experience) was conducted. As the results, as expected, alexithymia predicted depression, which was in line with the existing research flow. In addition, moderation analysis revealed that agreeableness, emotional stability, and openness to experience moderated the relationship between alexithymia and depression, while extraversion and conscientiousness did not. This study has an important implication in that it discriminated which specific personality traits function as moderators in the process of increasing depression due to alexithymia.
