The influence of bus stops near signalized intersections is one of the important factors which cannot be negligible in the analysis of the capacity of signalized intersections. Absence of consideration of bus bay can reduce capacity and increase the time that the stop of buses block other traveling vehicles. This influence is reflected by the bus blockage adjustment factor in KHCM, but the factor does not consider the course of each bus passing the intersection. Particularly, left turn buses have more influence on the capacity than the other buses and require the minimum length of the road for lane changes. All the existing criteria can apply only to arterial roads on which mostly traffic flows are continuous. And the criteria. which can determine the optimum location and the minimum distance between a signalized intersection and a bus bay, is not prepared and the related study is insufficient. Therefore, a theoretical formula is derived in this study being based on the theories which are avaliable to apply to the situation of signalized intersections.

This study proposed a method to determine the number and location of bus information terminals (BIT), which is a device to provide passengers with bus arrival time at bus stops in a Bus Information System (BIS). In low-density area, it is not efficient to survey bus demands such as the number of passengers at all bus stops due to time and cost. This kind of a survey would, however, competently cover all bus stops if performed inside the bus. The number of riding-on and -off passengers is observed for every bus stop, and this data collection is repeated over all day. Data obtained from the survey are aggregated each bus stop. This study defines Utility Index (UI), an aggregate each bus stop. Bus stops are ranked according to UI and determined for a BIT within budget limitation. As a case study, a bus line in Jeju island, Korea, was dealt with. This case showed that the more aggregate the better data quality. This study is expected to contribute to solving a location problem of BITs in a BIS.
The national standards for the installation of pedestrian crosswalks prohibits installation of crosswalks within 200 meters of nearby overpasses, underpasses, or crosswalks. In case the exceptional installation is required, the feasibility study is to be thoroughly conducted by the local police agency. However, it is an undeniable fact that the specific installation standards for optimal types and locations of crosswalks are not yet to be established. This paper examines the development of traffic accident prediction model applicable to different types and locations of bus stops(type A and type B) at mid-block intersections. Furthermore, it develops the poisson regression model which sets the "number of traffic accidents" and "traffic accident severity" as dependent variables, while using "traffic volumes", "pedestrian traffic volumes" and "the distance between crosswalks and bus stops" as independent variables. According to the traffic accident prediction model applicable to the type A bus stop location, the traffic accident severity increases relative to the number of traffic volumes, the number of pedestrian traffic volumes, and the distance between crosswalks and bus stops. In case of the type B bus stop model, the further the bus stop is from crosswalks, the number of traffic accidents decreases while it increases when traffic volumes and pedestrian traffic volumes increase. Therefore, it is reasonable to state that the bus stop design which minimizes the traffic accidents is the type C design, which is the one in combination of type A and type B, and the optimal distance is found to be 65 meters. In case of the type A design and the type B design, the optimal distances are found to be within range 60~70meters.

Currently, the only established criteria is on the location of bus stops on principal roads where uninterrupted flow mainly occurs. There are no clear guidelines on any method to locating bus stops considering the characteristics of bus operation and pedestrians. If the location or exterior of a bus stop is inappropriate, road users including bus drivers and pedestrians will be caused serious dangerous and inconvenience. In this study, the research below was performed in order to propose rational criteria for the location of bus stops integrated with or separated from speed-change lanes at signalized intersections considering smooth traffic flow and the characteristics of bus operation and pedestrians as well as traffic safety : First, the appropriate length of each of the near-side and far-side bus stops was calculated by categorizing bus stops to be constructed into those integrated with speed-change lanes and those separated from speed-change lanes. Secondly, the appropriate length of each of the bus stops divided into near-side bus stops and far-side bus stops and integrated with or separated from speed-change lanes was selected by considering the characteristics of pedestrians. Thirdly, whether the construction locations of bus stops were appropriate or not was determined based on the appropriate length of bus stops integrated with or separated from speed-change lanes, which was calculated and selected by considering traffic flow and the characteristics of pedestrians and considering traffic safety. The method for locating bus stops considering traffic flow, the characteristics of pedestrians, and traffic safety will be able to help suggestion criteria of bus stop and the location of safe and pleasant bus stops.

This study explores passengers' travel characteristics at six bus stops on the Seoul Ring Expressway using smart traffic card data. Based on the characteristics, political strategies to improve bus facilities on expressway are suggested. Firstly, among them two bus stops of Guri and Uiwang-Cheonggye have higher transfer rate of passengers, 37.56% and 36.9% of the total intercity (red) bus passengers on the expressway, respectively. Secondly, Uiwang-Cheonggye bus stop has the highest transfer rate, and Guri bus stop has also higher transfer rate and the highest on-and-off passengers. It implies that both bus stops need to be prioritized for improving bus stop facility, access roads, and connection facility between the bi-directional stops. Thirdly, Guri (down) bus stop has relatively longer waiting time for transfer, thus shorter bus headways running the bus stop should be considered. Lastly, most passengers using both stops come to and from Bundang-gu in Geongnam City. Overall, the results of this study would be helpful for transport planners to develop effective bus route policies and bus operation.
The Seoul metropolitan government introduced the bus information systems, bus rapid transit to increase travel speed and punctuality but still suffer from insufficiency. This paper delivers a study verifying the external factors at near the bus stops. The dependent variable was set to the standard deviation of (1) travel time and (2) travel time to and from the bus stop in this study. The independent variables were set to (1) the number of routes, (2) traffic volume by bus type, (3) the number of bus bays, (4) the possibility of passing, (5) the distance to crosswalks and intersections, and (5) the presence of residential road. The results showed that the most significant factors included the link section speed, number of bus bay, distance to crosswalk, and the possibility of passing.

Smart cards are currently used in about 150 locales, including the metropolitan ares, and are utilized as a policy base for various public areas, including public transportation, bus fares, and public transportation requirements. However, excluding the metropolitan area and some metropolitan areas, there are many areas where the existing BIS data was unable to match station information on the data and Smart cards itself are not available on the bus stop information by the line. The purpose of this research was to produce bus stop information generated by the bus stop based on the bus route, and the actual stop information generated by the model presented in the study was derived by matching the actual station information.
This study had been carried out based on the users' behavioral pattern in order to survey characteristics of bus station, a public facility. As a detailed analysis, quantification theory type 3 was performed based on 50 number of samples installed at each local governments as targets in order to evaluate bus station attributes and to survey its characteristics. As a result of this experiment, it was revealed that installation pattern of bus station would differ depending on characteristics of four axis of migrating population density, functionality and simplicity, metropolitan city of densely populated companies, local city with strong locality, the front of school with dense migrating population, secluded rural village, specific place like museum, rural area with dense migrating population. Therefore, in this study, detailed items were suggested comprehensively so that the design considering local environment and users' characteristics, in addition to modeling features of bus stations suitable for local characteristics, could be progressed. If any design and model complying with local environmental features based on above contents should be applied, bus station would be assessed by the users more positively in the future.
This study discusses an equity analysis performed to supplement the existing bus service evaluation system. The equity of 179 feeder bus routes in the city of Seoul(Year 2009) is analyzed by employing the modified BCC model along with the desirable inputs such as a number of bus stops and a frequency of operations. In the analysis, each DMU (Decision Making Unit) is assumed to use the desirable inputs, and produces both the index of equity and the index of accessibility. We apply an input-oriented modified BCC model to analyze the equity of the DMUs. The computational result indicates that only 9% of the feeder bus routes are equitable among the total DMUs and the average equity estimate is 0.702. It is also suggested that on average approximately 60% increases of desirable inputs (i.e., a number of bus stops and a frequency of operations) are needed in order to improve equity of DMU in the city of Seoul. The result of the tobit regression analysis on the determinant factors affecting the equity of DMUs shows that all the independent variables (i.e., a number of bus stops and a frequency of operations) are statistically significant at 5% significance level, and the number of bus stops is found to be the most influential factor.
