  • The response spectrum is one of the important basic materials for the aseismic design. Numerous strong ground motions based on the seismic source characteristics for the earthquakes occurring in the Korean Peninsula were simulated to obtain the response spectra by using the computer program, SMSIM, developed by Boore (2005). Through the extensive review of other study outcomes, the input data for the simulation such as seismic source and attenuation characteristics were selected. The spectra obtained from the simulated ground motions were normalized to 1.0 g of zero period acceleration and compared with the standard response spectrum proposed by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC, 1973). In this study, we found that the spectral values for the response spectra appeared to be larger than those of the standard spectrum in the frequency band above roughly 10 Hz. The variation of resulting response spectra was evaluated with the variable stress drops. It was shown that the spectral amplitude of the spectrum for the larger stress drop denotes higher value in the low frequency range.

  • This study suggests a method for deriving earthquake response based on log-normal distribution in order to obtain realistic and reliable probability and statistical seismic response of structures. The development of three earthquake suites were presented, with a brief description of 2%, 10%, and 50% in 50 years probability of exceedance according the USGS Los Angeles probabilistic seismic hazard maps. In order to analyze the basic dynamic behavior, a Single-Degree-of-Freedom (SDOF) structure was selected and the seismic response spectrum representing the response of each natural period was plotted. Overall, the mean response values presented through the log-normal distribution is lower than the standard normal distribution. Thus, it is considered that the former method can be provided as the effective cost on performance-based seismic design more than the latter one.

  • The horizontal response spectra using the observed ground motions from 15 Fukuoka earthquake series, including main earthquake (2005/03/20; Mw=6.5), were analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra (Regulatory Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings (1997). 178 horizontal ground motions, without considering soil types, were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that response spectrum have strong dependency on epicentral distance. The results also showed that the horizontal response spectra revealed higher values for frequency bands at two frequency bands (about 8 - 10 and 16- 20 Hz) than Regulatory Guide 1.60. The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Building Design Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that thehorizontal response spectra revealed higher values for almost all period bands than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum (500 yrs; Return Period; Seismic province 1; SE soil conditions). Through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the diversity of the observed ground motions should be considered more significantly to improve the certainty of response spectrum.

  • The velocity horizontal response spectra using the observed ground motions from the recent 5 macro earthquakes, equal to or larger than 4.8 in magnitude, around Korean Peninsula were analysed and then were compared to the acceleration horizontal response spectra, seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and finally the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings. 102 velocity horizontal ground motions, including NS and EW components, were used for velocity horizontal response spectra and then normalized with respect to the peak velocity value of each ground motion. First, the results showed that velocity horizontal response spectra have larger values at the range of medium natural period, but acceleration horizontal response spectra have larger values at the range of short natural periods. Secondly, the results also showed that velocity horizontal response spectra exceed Reg. Guide 1.60 for longer natural periods bands less than 6-7 Hz. Finally, the results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types(SC, SD, and SE soil type) and showed that velocity horizontal response spectra revealed much higher values for the frequency bands below 1.5(SC), 2.0(SD), and 3.0(SE) seconds, respectively, than the Korean Standard Response Spectrum. The results suggest that the fact that acceleration, velocity, and displacement horizontal response spectra have larger values at the range of short, medium, and long natural periods, respectively, can be applied consistently to those form domestic ground motion, especially, the velocity ground motion. Information on response spectrum at such medium range periods can be very important since the domestic design of buildings and structures emphasizes recently medium and long natural periods than short one due to increased super high-rise buildings.

  • In some current procedures, ground motions from different sources have been scaled by their peak ground accelerations and combined to obtain smoothed response spectra for specific regions. As consideration of the inelastic deformation capacity of structure, inelastic deformations are permitted under seismic ground excitation in all codes. In the ATC(Applied Technology Council) and UBC(Uniform Building Code), the inelastic design spectrum is obtained by reducing the elastic design spectrum by a factor that is independent of structural period. In this study, the average of nonlinear response spectra calculated from a sample of 20 records for each event are constructed to obtain the smoothed response spectra. These response spectra are used to examine the effects of structural strength factors such as the yield strength ratio and damping value. Through the regression analysis of nonlinear response of system for a given damping value and yield strength ratio, the required yield strength for seismic design can be estimated for a certain earthquake event. And a response modification coefficient depending on the natural period for current seismic design specifications are proposed.

  • The response spectrum was studied using the observed pound motion from the Odaesan Earthquake (2007/01/20), and then the results were compared to the seismic design response spectra (Reg Guide 1.60) applied to the domestic nuclear power plants. For the response spectrum analysis, 21 horizontal and 8 vertical observed Pound motions were used for normalization and statistical analysis. The results showed that the MPOSD (Mean Plus One Sigma Standard Deviation) response spectra above 10 Hz revealed higher values than the design response spectra and those below 10 Hz revealed much lower values fur both horizontal and vertical response spectra. These results suggest that the response spectra (Reg. Guide 1.60), used as seismic design code for nuclear facilities in Korea, especially above about 10 Hz, should be reexamined fur apllication to the nuclear power plants structures operated in the Korean Peninsula.

  • Structures with additional frictional damping system have strong nonlinearity that the dynamic behavior is highly affected. by the relative magnitude between frictional force and excitation load. In this study, normalized response spectra of the structures with non-dimensional friction force are obtained through nonlinear time history analyses of the mass-normalized single degree of freedom systems using 20 ground motion data recorded on rock site. The variation of the control performance of frictional damping system is investigated in terms of the dynamic load and the structural natural period, of which effects were not considered in the previous studies. Least square curve fitting equations are presented for describing those normalized response spectrum and optimal non-dimensional friction forces are obtained for controlling the peak displacement and absolute acceleration of the structure based on the derivative of the curve fitted design spectrum.

  • The horizontal and vertical response spectra using the observed ground motion from the recent 5 macro earthquakes were analysed and then were compared to both the seismic design response spectra(Reg Guide 1.60), applied to the domestic nuclear power plants, and the Korean Standard Design Response Spectrum for general structures and buildings(1997). 74 horizontal and 89 vertical observed ground motions, without considering soil types, were used for normalization with respect to the peak acceleration value of each ground motion. The results showed that the horizontal MPOSD(Mean Plus One Sigma Standard Deviation) response spectra revealed much higher values for the whole frequency bands above 1 Hz than Reg. Guide(1.60). For the vertical response spectra, the results showed slightly higher than just between 7 and 8 Hz frequency band. The results were also compared to the Korean Standard Response Spectrum for the 3 different soil types and showed that the horizontal MPOSD response spectra revealed much higher values for the whole periods below 2 second(0.5 Hz) than those of SE soil type. The vertical response spectra showed similar to the values of the Korean Standard Response Spectrum of SD soil type. These spectral values dependent on frequency could be related to characteristics of the domestic crustal attenuation and the effect of each site amplification. However, through the qualitative improvements and quantitative enhancement of the observed ground motions, the conservation of horizontal seismic design response spectrum should be considered more significantly for the whole frequency bands above the 1 Hz.
