In the design of ductile moment-resisting frames (DMRFs) following the strong column-weak beam dsign philosophy, it is desirable that the joint and column remain essentially elastic in order to insure proper energy dissipation and lateral stability of the structure. The joint has been identified as the "weak link" in DMRFs because any stiffness or strength deterioration in this region can lead to substantial drifts and the possibility of collapse due to P-delta effects. Moreover, the engineer is faced with the difficult task of detailing an element whose size is determined by the framing members, but which must resist a set of loads very different from those used in the design of the beams and columns. Four 2/3-scale beam-column-slab joint assemblies were designed according to existing code requirements of ACI 318-89, representing interior joints of DMRFs with reinforced high strength concrete. The influence on aseismic behavior of beam-column joints due to monolithic slab, has been investigated.estigated.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Bent-up Bars in Beam-Column Joint with High-Strength Concrete up to 800 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. 5 specimens were tested under reversed cyclic loadings. The primary variables were the number of the Bented Bars with Joint Core, compressive strength and loading patterrns. The results showed that bent-up bars in beam-column joint prevented crack from extending into core but the failure was concreterated at the face of beam-column joint. Thus shear stress constant value(Г) should be revised for High Strength Concrete Beam-Column Joint with Bent-up Bars.
In this study, the purpose finds out the best welding conditions for bonding of electric wire by ultrasonic welding. The material was plastic-insulating low-voltage-cabels for automobiles. The experiment varied the values of welding time and welding pressure and fixed the values of amplitude and energy. With the facts, the best condition for ultrasonic welding to achieve bonding exactly is gained according to the size of the cross-sectional area of the cable, and the adhesive intensity is greatly influenced by the variables of welding time and welding pressure. Also when the welding time and welding time and welding pressure increase as the cross-sectional areas of the cable increase the welding result in gained exactly.
The energy release rate for an interface crack in pseudo-isotropic dissimilar materials was obtained by the eigenfunction expansion method using the two-term William's type complex stress function. The complex stress function for pseudo-isotropic materials must be different from that for anisotropic materials. The energy release rate for an interface crack in pseudo-isotropic dissimilar materials was analyzed numerically by RWCIM. The results obtained were verified by comparing the other worker's results and discussed.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of number and location of finger joints on the bending strength of glue-laminated lumbers. Urea resin adhesives were used in this experiment and the resin content was 70% for cold pressing. The lamina were edge-jointed and end-jointed. The specimen were composed of one or three layers. The obtained results are summarized as follows; The effects of finger joints on the decrease of bending strength of glue laminated woods were different according to the number and location of finger joints. The decrease of MOR was highest on the middle position of laminated woods. The effects of several arrangements of finger joints on the bending strength of glue laminated woods showed on Figure 7 and 8. The variance of thickness-laminating on the bending strength of glue laminated woods were larger than those of width-laminating.
The tensile and fatigue experiments were conducted with tensile-shear specimens for investigating the strength of adhesive bonded and mechanical press joints of SPCC steel sheet used in the field of the automobile industry. The optimal punch press force was evaluated 50kN for combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining with a diameter of 8.3mm using SPCC sheet with a thickness of 0.8mm. The combining epoxy adhesive bonding and mechanical press joining exhibits the maximum tensile force of 750N. The fatigue strengths of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joint and pure adhesive joint were evaluated 370N and 320N at 106cycles, respectively. These values correspond to 22% and 20% of their maximum tensile forces, respectively. However, the fatigue strength of the combination of adhesive bond and mechanical press joining was much lower than that of pure mechanical press joining.
Characteristics of two correcting methods, a new Autogeneous GTAW heating (TIG) method and the conventional GMAW bead-on plate welding(MIG) method, for distorted aluminum fabrication structures were studied. As a result of microscopic study of Autogeneous GTAW heating and GMAW bead-on plate welding areas, porosities in weld metal and surface cracks in local heating zone were found. Through the mechanical tests, it was verified that porosities decrease tensile strength and surface of distortion, angular displacement and transeverse shrinkage were measures and compared. In order to investigate changes of material properties in heating area and cause of defects such thermal stresses were calculated by ADINA. Through the computations of transient thermal stresses and microscopic observation of fracture surface, thermal stress was found to be the cause of crack during Autogeneous GTAW heating.
Spot welding is a process that sheet metals are joined in one or more spot by heating at the faying interface. In this process, the spatter is dispersed from melted area. It has been reported that spatter generation has adverse effects on weld quality. However, no systematic study has been carried out to find out its effect on weld quality in resistance spot welding processes. In this study, specially designed specimen are used to perform experimental investigation of spatter generation and its effect. Major finding of this study show trends in tensile-shear strength for various amounts of spatter generated during spot welding process. Thus, optimum welding conditions are proposed in view of spatter generation and tensile-shear strength. (Received December 11, 2002)
In this paper, authors are trying to find optimum spot weldig conditions to minimize indentation of the plate surface which is crucial to quality of stainless rolling stocks. At first, to derive a simple equation to estimate the depth of indentation, a simplified one-dimensional bar model is proposed and validity of the model is confirmed by experiments. And also, to find proper welding conditions giving satisfied tensile strength of the welded joint, a simple formula is derived referring to the standard spot welding conditions by AWS. Optimization problem is formulated to find welding conditions such as welding current, time and applied force which give minimum indentation and proper tensile strength of joint, and solutions are found out. According to the results, the depth of indentation can be expressed by applied electrode froces and it can be shown that an optimum applied force exists.
The incomplete penetration(IP) discontinuity in butt joint weld, which is detected during safety analysis of the steel bridge by nondestructive evaluation(NDE) method, is classified as unacceptable defect according to the NDE codes and standards. In fact, there are a little allowance in butt joint weld in the view point of design criterion, and also detected IP discontinuity should be classified and evaluated for the fatigue strength and residual life estimation. In this study, we performed fatigue test to evaluate the fatigue strength of high strength steel(SWS490A) containing IP discontinuities in various size, the results compared and classified according to the bridge construction standard specification which published by korea administration of construction and traffic. Experimental results could be used to evaluate and estimate the IP discontinuities considering different stress range in butt joint bridge weld during periodic safety inspection.
