The object of this study is to develop new examination technique for detecting debond in adhesive interface of different kinds of materials. Ultrasonic signal was modeled by theoretically analyzing ultrasonic propagation phenomenon of the adhesive interface and debonding interface. The test method using the phase reversal of the debonding interface applied to the FRP/Rubber test block. Aluminum/Rubber test block with the flat bottom hole was manufactured to evaluate quantitatively the minimum detection ability of defects. The pulse echo reflection method and the phase reversal method were mutually compared and it was estimated that the phase reversal method could detect the debond on the basis of the theoretically predicted ultrasonic signal and ultrasonic test data.

Gecko adhesion system consists of beam-shaped seta and spatula which has the role of adhesive pad. In this paper, adhesion mechanism of gecko adhesion system is performed by using adhesive beam contact model. this model has a feature of non-uniform stress profile on the contact surface and adhesion/detachment mechanism is determined by the tensile stress of the contact region. a spatula tip pad has the role of reduction of maximum tensile stress and adhesive force is increased due to this effect. As for a reverse loading case, maximum compressive stress drops by the spatula effect and this cause unsymmetric loading conditions between adhesion and detachment forces. In this study, finite element method is used for the analysis of adhesive beam contact model and the results for spatula effect are presented.

A sturdy on the adhesion properties of solid propellants, liners, and insulation was carried out according to the types of barrier coats. A barrier coats were used to prevent migration of the plasticizer or curative between the propellant/liner/insulation, and the barrier coat was selected out of Isocyanates with different molecular weight and number of -NCO in one molecule. As a result, it was found that the more the -NCO group and the larger molecular weight, the stronger adhesion. In addition, as a result of experiments about effects of the pot life after applying the barrier coat on bond strength, the adhesion strength was shown to increase as the pot life was short.

In the present paper, the nondestructive test method was suggest to establish the bonding status of a motor case assembly composed of a steel motor case, adiabatic rubber layer and an ablative composite tube with strain data, AE(acoustic emission) signals and UT(ultrasonic test) data. And, finite element analysis was conducted to verify quantitatively the bonding status of motor case assembly under inner pressure loading. The bonding status could be judged whether the bonding status is perfect or contact condition by the data correlation study with AE signals and strain data measured from air pressure test. And, to classify the bonding status of motor case and rubber layer among bonding layers, UT method was also applied. From this study, the bonding status could be classified and detected into fourth types for all bonding layers as follows: (1) initial un-bonding, (2) perfect do-bonding during an air pressure test, (3) partially de-bonding during an air pressure test, and (4) perfect bonding.

In this study, adhesion promoters with acrylate and carboxylic acid moiety were synthesized from malenized polybutadiene and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate for producing adhesive film with low water absorption and high adhesion. The surface properties, adhesion strength, mechanical properties and water absorption of adhesive films were characterized according to the amount of acrylate and carboxylic acid in the synthesized adhesion promoters. As the carboxylic acid in the adhesion promoters increased, the adhesion strength showed a tendency to increase and the mechanical properties also improved compared to the commercial adhesion promoter. The compatibility of adhesion promoters improved remarkably due to the presence of polybutadiene (hydrophobic nature), maleic anhydride (hydrophilic nature) and carboxylic acid (hydrophilic nature).

An aluminum foil-laminated sheet is a laminated steel sheet on which aluminum foil is adhesively bonded. It is usually used on the outer panel of home appliances to provide an aluminum feeling and appearance on the surface of the product. The delamination of aluminum foil is one of the main problems during the stretch forming process. The purpose of this study is was to determine the delamination limit of an aluminum foil-laminated sheet in the stretch forming process. The delamination was dependent on the bonding strength between aluminum foil and steel sheet. The fracture behavior of the interface between the aluminum foil and the steel sheet was described by a cohesive zone model. A finite element was conducted with the cohesive zone model to analyze the relationship between the delamination limit and the bonding strength of the interface. The interface bonding strength was evaluated by lap shear and T-peel test. The delamination limit of the aluminum foil-laminated sheet was determined by using the bonding strength of the steel sheet. The delamination limit was also verified by the Erichsen test.

Objectives: This study investigated the effect of the strength and wetting characteristics of adhesives on the bond strength to dentin. The experimental adhesives containing various ratios of hydrophobic, low-viscosity Bis-M-GMA, with Bis-GMA and TEGDMA, were made and evaluated on the mechanical properties and bond strength to dentin. Materials and Methods: Five experimental adhesives formulated with various Bis-GMA/Bis-MGMA/TEGDMA ratios were evaluated on their viscosity, degree of conversion (DC), flexural strength (FS), and microtensile bond strength (MTBS). The bonded interfaces were evaluated with SEM and the solubility parameter was calculated to understand the wetting characteristics of the adhesives. Results: Although there were no significant differences in the DC between the experimental adhesives at 48 hr after curing (p > 0.05), the experimental adhesives that did not contain Bis-GMA exhibited a lower FS than did those containing Bis-GMA (p < 0.05). The experimental adhesives that had very little to no TEGDMA showed significantly lower MTBS than did those containing a higher content of TEGDMA (p < 0.05). The formers exhibited gaps at the interface between the adhesive layer and the hybrid layer. The solubility parameter of TEGDMA approximated those of the components of the primed dentin, rather than Bis-GMA and Bis-M-GMA. Conclusions: To achieve a good dentin bond, a strong base monomer, such as Bis-GMA, cannot be completely replaced by Bis-M-GMA for maintaining mechanical strength. For compatible copolymerization between the adhesive and the primed dentin as well as dense cross-linking of the adhesive layer, at least 30% fraction of TEGDMA is also needed.

It is important to measure the quantitative adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend. In measuring the adhesive strength between an organic adhesive and a metal adherend, the effect of the kind and thickness of the adherend on the adhesive strength was studied. Two kinds of metal adherends were selected, aluminum (Al1050) and stainless steel (STS304), and a dolly test and a lap shear test were used to measure the adhesive strength. When measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the tensile stress mode of dolly test, the change in the thickness of the metal adherend had little effect on the adhesive strength, however, the adhesive strength was different depending on the kind of the adherend. On the other hand, when measuring the adhesive strength between the organic adhesive and the metal adherend by the lap shear test, the change in the relative thickness of the metal adherend had an effect on the adhesive strength. The reason is that the bending phenomenon of the adherend occurring in the edge of bonding region during the lap shear test contributes to lowering the adhesive strength by generating additional tensile stress in the bonding region. From this work, it is concluded that the dolly test could be widely used when measuring the quantitative adhesive strength of organic adhesives and metal adherend because there is little change in adhesive strength even though the thickness of the adherend is changed.
In this paper, the bonding strengths of co-cured T800 carbon/epoxy composite-aluminum single lap joints with and without additional pressures were investigated using the pressure information induced by the fiber tension during a filament winding process. The specimens of all the tests were fabricated by an autoclave vacuum bag de-gassing molding being controlled forming pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa including vacuum). A special device which can act uniform additional pressures on the joining part of the single lap joint specimen was designed to measure the bonding strengths of composite-aluminum liners of type III hydrogen pressure vessel fabricated by a filament winding process. After the three different additional pressures (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa and 0.7MPa) were applied to the specimens the effect of the additional pressures on the bonding strengths of the co-cured single-lap joints were evaluated.
