  • This study was conducted to establish a strategy to improve the grafted cacti export which has been stagnated in these year. To promote its exporting, first of all, Korean cactus producer needs to save the cost of labor by using bottom nutriculture system for the greater national competitiveness. Second, it is desired to diversify the export cactus items such as a new variety of Epiphyllum truncatum, big size of perfect brand, a finished package production to satisfy foreigner's demand coping with international market change of grafted cacti. On the other hand, Korean cultivar protection and national negotiation for a reducing tariff rate or an efficient plant inspection system are also needed.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the market status and favorite trend of the main importing country of grafted cacti from Korea. The exporting of grafted cacti in Korean has been stagnated in these year. Korea exported grafted cacti to Netherlands 52.1%, followed by USA 14.7%, Canada 9.8%, Japan 2.4%, and Australia 1.9% among 2,522 thousand$ in 2008. Most of exporting grafted cactus was Gymnocalycium mihanovichill above 80%, the rest followed Chamaecereus silvestrii and then Noyocactus scopa. Most of countries favorite big one and various color of Gymnocalycium mihanovichill, however, Australia and Japan prefer red one.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the global commodity chains of the grafted cactus of Umseong region. The major findings of this study are as follows. Buying materials for cultivating the grafted cactus is based on the intra-Umseong local network. In addition, exporting grafted cactus using cheaper labor force means spatial division of labor from semi-periphery region to core region in terms of Wallerstein's world system theory. It is thought that buyer-driven commodity chains of farm products profit by division of labor caused by a sales network of the grafted cactus. And such situation means that high quality of the grafted cactus in Umseong maintains the spatial continuity by commodity chains.

A crossing between 'GG0214319' and 'GG021295' in 2005 was obtained 338 seedlings. 'Yellow King' was finally selected through the test of specific growth and glove coloring characteristics in 2007. The color of glove and tubercles is yellow. The shape of glove is round with 8~9 ribs. Spine is short and brown color. Growth is fast as 6 month after planting to reach 34.1 mm in diameter. Propagation ability is good to set as many as 12.4 tubercles.

A crossing between 'Redjewelry' and 'GG024824' in 2005 was obtained 135 seedlings. 'Red King' was finally selected through the test of specific growth and coloring characteristics in 2007. The color of body and tubercles is red. The shape of glove is flat round with 8~9 ribs. Spine is short length and light brown color. Growth is fast as 6 month after planting to reach 36.8 mm in diameter. Propagation ability is good as to set as many as 14.1 tubercles.

  • A new graft cactus (Copiapoa scopa) cultivar 'Redstone' was developed at Cactus Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do A.R.E.S, in 2007. GCP563 and GCP618 were crossed in 2004 and we got 9 seedlings from this combination. After pedigree selection in 2005, one cultivar was finally selected through the test of specific character in 2007 and named as "Redstone". "Redstone" cultivar has red brown color and round globose shape with 15 ribs and its spines are black. This cultivar is able to produce 26.8 offshoots per plant. 'Redstone' cultivar has higher productivity and more slow growth than Copiapoa scopa cultivar.

  • This experiment was conducted to elucidate the proper suppling frequency of nutrient solution for grafted cactus Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii grown hydroponically without medium. Grafted cactus seedlings were planted onto the cultivation bed without medium, using labor-saving tray. The treatments like 1, 3, 5 and 7 times of nutrient solution supply per day and continuous soaking of plant root in the nutrient solution during the daytime were tested in summer and winter season. The growth of grafted cactus was worst in the treatment of one time supply of nutrient solution per day, and there were not significant difference in growth of grafted cactus among other treatments both in summer and winter season. 17.6% of grafted cactus seedlings failed to rooting in the treatment of one time supply of nutrient solution per day in winter season. The proper suppling frequency of nutrient solution, for the grafted cactus Gymnocalycium mihanovichii var. friedrichii grown hydroponically without medium, was three times supply of nutrient solution per day both in summer and winter seasons considering growth and rooting of plants.

  • A new graft cactus (Chamaecereus silvestrii f. variegata) cultivars "Yellow Ttree" was developed at Cactus Research Institute, Gyeonggi-do A.R.E.S. in 2007. GC013001 and GC0110703 were crossed in 2005 and we got 42 seedlings from this combination. After pedigree selection in 2005, one cultivar were finally selected through the test of specific character in 2007 and named as "Yellow Ttree". "Yellow Ttree" has cylindrical shape of yellow color with 13~14 ribs. Formation of its offshoots is concentrated on the lower part of the plant. This cultivar is able to produce 13.9 offsets shoots per plant and its offshoots are hard.

  • This work is for selecting superior media which is similar to Peat Moss that is in general use as media of Gymnocalycium mihanovichii for Export such as 'Hwang wall' but lower price. The result on growth of 7 kinds of media (Peat Moss, BM6 Culture Medium, Coco Peat, Hydro Cray, Hydro Ball, Hugato, Vermiculite) which are applied watering (overhead irrigation, sub irrigation) based on bichemical analysis including chemical, physical analysis are following. The result of bi-chemical analysis shows that Coco Peat was stabilized planting after 90 days and Hydro Ball has high water holding capacity. The experimental result of growth in grafted cactus 'Hwangwall' shows Coco Peat is similar to Peat Moss on organic matter and in case of inorganic media, Hugato, Vermiculite, Hydro Cray made satisfactory results. But, the weight of inorganic media is too light to be tied. Consequently, Coco Peat and sphagnum moss as organic media has lower price and the condition of growth is analogous to Peat Moss. On the other hands, Hydro Ball was chosen as a substitute of Peat Moss in inorganic media.

  • This study was conducted to increase the income of cactus farm by selecting cheaper and better media than the peat moss using for Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Huhong'. We cultivated Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Huhong' on 10 kinds of media (peat moss, culture medium, coco peat, sphagnum moss, hydro ton, hydro cray, hydro bal, hugato, vermiculite, perlite) and analyzed media's physiochemical factors and growth, betacyanin. The results were as follows: In case of media's physical condition planting Gymnocalycium mihanovichii 'Huhong' after 90 days, an approximate value with peat moss is culture medium and coco peat. Also, coco peat has no change in chemical media. The rate of growth and development is high in Coco peat while overall culture medium and coco peat was seen lower growth. The level of betacyanin in subirrigation is higher than overhead irrigation. Meanwhile, hugato among 10 kinds of media has high value in both of overhead irrigation and bottom watering. Thus, culture medium and coco peat is proper for alternation of peat moss due to similar value with peat moss. And coco peat is favorable to media, growth condition, pigment.
