  • This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and a mechanical anisotropy of rock on the subject of granite distributed in the Namwon area Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian strengths with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes of granite are shown the linear relation. In the case of the result of the p-wave velocity measurement. it is represented that the velocity of vortical direction is faster about 10 to 15% than other two horizontal directions. The difference between velocities is caused by a developmental pattern of microcracks distributed in rock. Moreover, this result is very consistent with the result investigated through thin sections. The proportion of uniaxial compression strength to Index of point load strength ($Is_{(50)}$) is 18~20 times in case of granite. Uniaxial compressive strength is relatively good relationship with point load strength, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength point load strength of them is the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, comparing with other experimental methods.

  • Though the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) of rock material is one of the key properties for rockmass characterization purposes, core samples for the test cannot always be obtained from the field. Indirect tests such as the point load test (PLT) can be a useful alternative. In this study, correlation between the UCS and the point load strength index of limestone of Imgye area was analyzed, and the linear regression equation obtained from regression analysis of two variables was suggested. The results of this study were also compared with previous studies on limestone. It was suggested that conversion factors for the same rock type from diverse areas in Korea may have different values, and more data should be obtained to increase the accuracy of regression analysis.

  • The physical and mechanical properties of the sedimentary rocks deposited in Taegu and Kyongbuk region have been measured in the laboratory and at the field. Four kinds of rocks such as the shale, the mudstone, the siltstone and the sandstone were the object of this study. In sedimentary rock joint, bedding made it impossible to extract cores for uniaxial compressive test. Some correlations between the uniaxial compressive strength and the other characteristic values such as Point load index, Schmidt hammer rebound, Brazilian strength, P-wave velocity and Absorption ratio are made. The chemical and mineral compositions are also investigated by the XRF and XRD analysis. In addition, the weathering grade of rocks are classified by the quantitative indices of Point load index, Schmidt hammer rebound and Absorption ratio.

  • We performed laboratory measurements of the mechanical properties and slake durability of Cretaceous shale from the Hwasun area, Korea, including highly weathered and fresh samples, yielding ranges of specific gravity of 2.14-2.88, dry density of 1.86-2.83(g/$cm^3$), water content of 0.12-6.36 (%), porosity of 1.33-20.49 (%), and absorption ratio of 0.51-8.5 (%). The absorption ratio shows a strong linear relation with porosity, expressed as Ab = 0.44P-0.09 (Ab: absorption ratio, P: porosity). Values of the slake durability index ($Id_2$) and point load intensity index ($Is_{(50)}$) of highly weathered to fresh shale are 90.07-99.33 (%) and 10.8-90.2(kg/$cm^2$), respectively. $Id_2$ is linearly related to $Is_{(50)}$, expressed as $Is(50)=1E-07e^{0.2033Id_2}$(kg/$cm^2$)($r^2=0.69$). This equation is a useful tool for estimating the $Id_2$ value for shale in the Hwasun area.

  • It is difficult for seismic survey to get hold of characteristic of coal shale fractured zone and if coal shale zone did not come into contact with underground water, coal shale zone has characteristic of good strength. But in case coal shale zone is exposed by excavation or blasting to the air, strength of coal shale zone decreases in short term and weathering of coal shale zone progresses rapidly. Therefore, the prediction of tunnel collapse is not easy in the coal shale zone and the great portion of tunnel collapse takes place in a moment. From a view point of strength, after twelve hours form result of point load test strength of coal shale decreases by fifty six percent when coal shale zone come into contact with ground water. The standard reinforcement design of coal shale fractured zone was presented in the paper.

  • Microcracks in rock materials, whether natural or induced, provide useful information on the engineering performance of in situ rockmasses. A population of preferentially oriented microcracks has observable effects on the physical properties of a rockmass, but their effects may not be evident if the rock material is highly anisotropic due to other causes. An experimental program was undertaken to investigate the effect of rock fabrics on the physical properties of rock materials. In this study, anisotropy in the circumferential wave velocity and the direction of induced fractures under axial point loading were measured. Rock specimens (NX-size) of the leucocractic Pocheon granite were cored from rock blocks, retaining the relative directions of each specimen. Another set of specimens was prepared from the rock cores of the same meterial, obtained in the field. The master orientation line (MOL) was set to be the representative direction of the microcracks in the specimen. Variation of the circumferential wave velocity of each specimen was then measured along the core, keeping the MOL as reference. The direction of the minimum wave velocity was nearly perpendicular to the direction of the MOL. Coring of smaller-sized (EX-size), concentric specimens from the NX specimens were then followed, and axial point loading was applied. The direction of induced fractures due to axial point loading was closely related to the MOL direction, confirming the prior test result.

  • In the ASTM and ISRM, an uniaxial compressive strength(${\sigma}_{c}$) has been estimated to be 23(ASTM) or $20{\sim}25$(ISRM) times of point load strength index using a diametral test regardless of the rock rating or geological conditions. This paper presents a relationship between $I_{s}$ and ${\sigma}_{c}$ of a weak sedimentary rocks on Ulsan of the Kyung-Sang Basin in Korea. In the results of 291 for ${\sigma}_{c}$ test and 2310 for $I_{s}$ test from 77 spots, the predicted errors of ${\sigma}_{c}$ determined by strength ratio of ${\sigma}_{c}/I_{s}$ have been relatively less than those determined by linear regression analysis. And in case of weak sedimentary rocks such as mudstones, shales and sandstones, ${\sigma}_{c}$ should be lower than those suggested by ISRM and ASTM.

  • Little attention has been paid to Brazilian test for the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rocks as an indirect method despite high availability of civil engineering parameters. This paper employed Brazilian test value to estimate two parameters of igneous rocks (granite, andesite, rhyolite) of Korea. High reliability of Brazilian test has been supported by the conclusions drawn from point load test and Schmidt hammer strike values. It has also been found that this method can be applied easily and rapidly to the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength and elastic modulus of rock cores when direct tests are not available.

  • Los Angeles abrasion loss test has usally been applied to the quarry for the purpose of aggregate hardness estimation. 324 blocks from 25 sites of Kyeongsang basin samples of sedimentary rock were examined and tested in laboratary. This paper found that L. A. abrasion loss test is a good method to estimate engineering index such as uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, indirect tensile strength, point load strength index, Schmidt hammer rebound value of sedimentary rocks with high correlation factor. Engineers will prefer L. A. abrasion loss test to the other one for design and construction as this method is quick and easy.

  • The sedimentary rocks exposed around Mt. Palgong were subjected to metamorphism due to a granitic magma intrusion at late Cretaceous, and they eventually metamorphosed to hornfels by the action of both hydrothermal solution and high temperature supplied from the magma. The hornfels zone around the granite body ranges from 2.0 to 3.5 km in width but the boundary between hornfels and sedimentary rocks is not obviously defined because the metamorphic grade gradually decreases with distance from the granite boundary. A series of laboratory tests on 350 core specimens made by 35 fresh rock blocks obtained from 5 selected locations around Mt. Palgong are performed to verify the variation of physical and mechanical properties related to metamorphic grade of the rock. Water content and absorption ratio of the hornfels linearly increase with distance to the granite boundary whereas dry unit weight, p-wave velocity, point load strength, and slake durability index linearly decrease with the distance. These results imply that the metamorphic grade of the hornfels also linearly decrease with the distance to granite boundary. Empirical equations for the variation of properties with the distance to granite boundary and relationship between a property and another one are deduced by regression analyses. And a criteria for classification of hornfels exposed in the study area based on the P-wave velocity and point load strength is proposed.
