Clay minerals have been used in pharmaceutical industries as active ingredients and excipients without pharmacological activity such as diluents, emulsifying agents, viscosity-increasing agents, and lubricants. For example, bentonite, kaolin, magnesium aluminum silicate, and talc are generally and extensively used pharmaceutical ingredients, which are restrictedly regulated by Pharmacopoeias. We discuss the physicochemical and biopharmaceutical properties of clay minerals. In addition, we introduce the cases of pharmaceutical applications of clay minerals. From this review, pharmaceutical applications of clay minerals can be one of strategies for the development of high value-added products from clay minerals.

In this work, we investigated clay and raw materials from China (black clay, red clay, white clay) and Korea (Cheonan clay, Obu clay) used for the manufacture of porcelain products. According to chemical analysis results, feldspar components containing CaO, K2O, Na2O and quartz are found in clay materials besides primary clay such as kaollinte, for the clay materials from Korea, which is found more in clay materials from Korea than from China. For the Fe2O3 content, governing whiteness of porcelain products, more iron oxide (> 5 %) is found in Korean clays (Cheonan clay, obu clay, red clay) compared to those form China (black, white clay). Through X-ray diffraction analysis, kaolinite and Halloysite are found to be main phases for all the raw materials and second phases such as quartz and pyrophyllite are found. Using these clay materials, raw materials for porcelain products were produced, and the physicochemical properties were investigated for sintered samples. Absorption rate is in order of Baekja-A < Baekja-B < Yeonbuncheong < Jinbuncheong < Cheongja, and the sample, sintered at 1250℃ in reductive atmosphere, exhibits the lowest absorption rate. Comparing the color of the sintered samples, the samples sintered in oxidative atmosphere (L* value: 86~95 %) show higher whiteness value than those sintered in reductive atmosphere (L* value: 81~93 %). For the Cheongja and Buncheong, the samples sintered in reductive atmosphre shows higher whiteness, L* values, and low a*/b* value, which is due to reduction of iron oxide (Fe2O3).

There are more than 2000 minerals on earth, and it has been implemented in various fields such as environment, architecture, livestock, chemistry, pharmaceuticals. Clay minerals are considered that they can change the physical and chemical properties through the adsorption and release of metal ions. Although domestic deposit of non-metallic mineral resources is approximately ninety-six billion tons, its application is limited and has hardly been used in high value-added industries involved in medicine, medical supplies, and functional food materials. Bentonite and zeolite are already used for cosmetic purposes and also used in living goods and packing materials. However, direct application to the food industry is relatively very rare. Since records regarding the intake of minerals for foods and medicines are found in the old literatures, the utilization of non-metallic minerals as food materials appears to be highly profitable. According to the trends in patent research for food and mineral resources, the company plays a main role for the development of the food containing non-metallic minerals in USA, and the trends confirms that this industry is emerging. Here, we provided the information about domestic and foreign patent trend for food industries involved in mineral resources and the application of mineral resources in the food industries. We also covered the domestic regulation regarding usage of mineral resources in food, and proposed domestic application plan for food production using mineral resources in the future.

This research was designed to investigate the removal of heavy metals, such as $Al^{3+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$, by adsorption on clay minerals. Bentonite(Raw-Bentonite), $Ca^{2+}$ and $Na^+$ ion exchanged bentonite(Ca- and Na-Bentonite) and montmorillonite, such as KSF and K10 from Sigma Aldrich, were used as adsorbents. The component of five inorganic adsorbents was analyzed by XRF, and the concentration of metal ions was measured by ICP. The cation exchange capacity(CEC) and the particle charge of adsorbents were measured. The initial concentration range of metal ions was $10{\sim}100$ mg/L. From the experimental results, it was shown that the adsorption equilibrium was attained after $1{\sim}2$ hours. The maximum percentage removal of $Al^{3+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ on Na-Bentonite were more than 98% and that of $Mn^{2+}$ was 66%. $Al^{3+}$ was leached out from KSF with the higher concentration of hydrogen ion. Percentage removals of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ on KSF were 88% and 59%, respectively. In general, the percentage removal of metal ions was decreased with the higher initial concentration of metal ions. The adsorption capacity of metal ions on Na-Bentonite was $1.3{\sim}19$ mg/g. Freundlich equation was used to fit the acquired experimental data. As the results, the adsorption capacity of metal ions was in the order of Na-Bentonite$\gg$Raw-Bentonite$\cong$K10>Ca-Bentonite>KSF. Freundlich constant, K of Na-Bentonite was the largest for metal ions. The order K of Na-Bentonite was Al>Cu>Pb>Zn>Mn, and the adsorption intensity(1/n) was determined to be $0.2{\sim}0.39$.

Preservation of the original form is the principle for conservation, management and utilization of cultural heritages. Thus, non-destructive analysis of these samples are important field of the conservation science. In this study, examined the applicability of nondestructive surface X-ray diffraction analysis (ND-XRD) for cultural heritage by materials (rock specimen, jade stone, pigment painted specimen, earthen artifact, metal artifact). In result, all type of sample is recorded suitable X-ray diffraction patterns for identifying mineral composition in case of surface condition with adequate particle size and arrangement. And diffraction pattern is reflected surface information than matrix. Therefore, ND-XRD is thought to be applicable not only mineral identification but also interpretation of manufacturing technique and alteration trend about layered sample (in horizontally or vertically). Whereas some exceptional diffraction patterns were recorded due to overlapping information on specific crystal planes. It caused by skip the sample treatment (powdering and randomly orientation). It could be advantageously used for mineral identification, such as preferred orientation of clay minerals. In contrast, irregular diffraction pattern caused by single crystalline effect is required careful evaluation.

In this study, cement clinkers were sintered at each temperature by replacing some of the clay components of cement clinkers with coal materials. The mineral phase change of sintered cement clinker was quantitatively analyzed by XRD-Rietveld method. As the sintering temperature of cement clinker increased, the amount of belite decreased, the amount of alite increased, and the amount of free-CaO decreased. The form of alite and belite could be distinguished at sintering temperature of 1450℃ or higher. The crystal size was greatly increased at 1500℃ sintering. It was confirmed that the excessive sintering was progressed. Free-CaO decreased with the increase of sintering temperature. At 1450 ℃ or higher, it was less than 0.5%. In 1450℃ or greater, it is determined that enough sintering is included. Therefore, the application of fly ash as a raw material of cement clinker was judged to be usable as a source of chemical components of alumina and iron raw materials.
