This paper concerns about a study on dynamic responses of tracked vehicle on soft cohesive soil. For dynamic analyses of tracked vehicle, two different models were adopted, i.e. a single-body model and a multi-body model. The single-body vehicle model was assumed as a rigid body with 6-dof. The multi-body vehicle was modeled by using a commercial software, RecurDyn-LM. For the both models properties of cohesive soft soil were modeled by means of three relationships: pressure to sinkage, shear displacement to shear stress, and shear displacement to dynamic sinkage. Traveling performances of the two tracked vehicle models were compared through dynamic analyses in time domain.

Nano-scale experiments for adhesion force and friction force were performed with AFM/FFM. In macro-scale, the friction coefficient is constant without relating to the change of contact area. However, many papers have indicated that in nano-scale, the friction coefficient is related to the contact area. Contact area would increase with the normal force. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the trend of the friction coefficient of Si(100) and Mica according to the normal force and then. the contact area was calculated by JKR-theory. Results showed the friction coefficient was constant under 180 nm$^2$ contact area and over 180 nm$^2$ contact area, it was degraded. Moreover. the friction coefficient was constant according to the adhesion force.
The sixth underground pumped powerhouse cavern is now under construction in Korea. For the stability analysis for the caverns of the five underground powerhouses, finite element method was used. For the analysis, in-situ rock stress were measured by overcoring method. The stress measurement showed that initial horizontal to vertical stress ratio was 1.07-1.32 in low powerhouse sites. Rock mass strength and elasticity were assumed from rock core properties through engineering processes. So the ratio of input elasticity fur the analysis were about 0.16-0.55 to rock core elasticity. In most of the analysis, elasto-plastic condition with Mohr-Coulomb failure criteria were applied. But in one case, viscoelastic condition was applied, too. The input cohesion and internal friction angle were approximately 0.12-0.22, 0.6-0.87 to rock core strength parameters, respectively.
In situ clay soils with Ko condition have anisotropic characteristics, varying the response according to the principal stress direction upon loading. But because of their practicality and simplicity, consolidated isotropic undrained compression tests are commonly used in practice to determine the behavior of cohesive soils. In this study to investigate the anisotropic characteristics and the effects of consolidation stress states on the response of normally consolidated clay soils during shearing, triaxial compression and extension tests after consolidating the undisturbed clay soil samples, which are obtained as a block sample to normalized consolidation states under isotropic or Ko state, were carried out. As a result of tests, the anisotropy of the undrained strength was confirmed. Comparing the soil responses between isotropic and Ko consolidation, the undrained strength by isotropic consolidation is overestimated because of its higher mean consolidation pressure. And isotropic consolidation reduces the anisotropy of soil response and influences on the stress-strain behavior and pore pressure response because the animotropic soil structure is partially collapsed during isotropic consolidation process. Also, OCR in overconsolidated soils is decreased by isotropic consolidatiorL Friction angle in eztension is higher than that in compression, but regression analysis shows that friction angle with cohesion in extension is almost the same as that without cohesion in compresslon.
The unsaturated slope usually is stable for a long time, but fails during heavy rainfall. And the factors of the rainfall intensity exhibit significant roles because the water content and the shear stress developed along the potential failure surface will be changed by the rainfall intensity. The objective of the study presented in this paper is to analyze the relationship between rainfall intensity and shear stress of the soil slopes by applying the laboratory slope model apparatus and undrained direct shear test with rainfall intensity controlled. The soil sample was taken from the field slope of Youngdong, and particle size analysis was done. To look over the relationship between rainfall intensity and shear strength of slope, the three-dimensional relationships among shear strength, normal stress and water content of the slope soil samples are examined; those are based on the data from the TDR sensor and undrained direct shear test.

Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) can describe not only swelling owing to decrease in effective stress, but also wetting-induced swelling due to decrease in suction. And the BBM can also consider increase in cohesion and apparent preconsolidation stress with suction, and decrease in the apparent preconsolidation stress with temperature. Therefore, the BBM is widely used all over the world to predict and to analyze coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of bentonite which is considered as buffer materials at the engineered barrier system in the high-level radioactive waste disposal system. However, the BBM is not well known in Korea, so this paper introduce the BBM to Korean rock engineers and geotechnical engineers. In this study, Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model is introduced before all, because the BBM was first developed as an extension of the MCC model to unsaturated soil conditions. Then, the thermo-elasto-plastic version of the BBM is described in detail.
The slope stability analysis by the limit equilibrium method has the disadvantage that it can be applied only when the analysis is performed by setting the critical plane after analyzing the active surface many times and the soil is uniform and only the safety factor can be calculated. However, the analysis using the strength reduction analysis method has advantages that the engineer can judge various aspects and calculate the safety factor. In this study, the safety factor according to the change of slope and shear strength was compared and analyzed using limit equilibrium analysis and strength reduction method. It is suggested that it is desirable to use the strength reduction method which can synthetically review the stress, displacement, and strain in the soil.
This study suggests three spatial distribution functions of strength parameters, which can be adopted in the derivation of failure conditions for transversely isotropic rocks. All three proposed functions, which are the oblate spheroidal function, the exponential function, and the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor, consist of two model parameters. With assumption that the cohesion and friction angle can be described by the proposed distribution functions, the transversely isotropic Mohr-Coulomb criterion is formulated and used as a failure condition in the simulation of the conventional triaxial tests. The simulation results confirm that the failure criteria incorporating the proposed distribution functions could reproduce the general trend in the variations of the axial stress at failure and the directions of failure planes with varying inclination of the weankness planes and confining pressure. Among three distribution functions, the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor yields the highest axial strength, while the axial strength estimated by the oblate spheroidal distribution function is the lowest.
Limit analysis of upper and lower bound solutions has been well developed to provide the stability numbers for shallow tunnels in cohesive soil ($c_u$ material), cohesive-frictional soil (c'-$\phi$' material) and cohesionless soil ($\phi$'material). However, an extension of these methods to relatively deep circular tunnels in the cohesionless soil has been explored rarely to date. For this reason, the closed-form analytical solutions including lower bound solution based on the stress discontinuity concept and upper bound solution based on the kinematically admissible failure mechanism were proposed for assessing tunnel collapse load in this study. Consequently, the tunnel collapse load from those solutions was compared with both the finite element analysis and the previous analytical bound solutions and shown to be in good agreement with the FE results, in particular with the FE soil elements located on the horizontal tunnel axis.

This paper presents the quantitative damage assessment of granite taken from KAERI Underground Research Tunnel using acoustic emission (AE). The results determined showed the crack initiation and crack damage stress occurred at 48%, 72% of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) and until the applied stress level was reached the crack damage stress, the damage degree was 0.06. When the applied stress exceeded 80%, 90% of UCS, the damage degree were 0.34, 0.06 and which were similar to those obtained from axial deformation modulus. The simply regression analysis was used to interpret the relationship of the two damage assessment techniques and the two were highly correlated ($R^2$=0.90). Therefore, damage degree based on the AE energy and mohr-coulomb failure criterion were adopted to predict the mechanical properties. As results, the axial deformation modulus, rock strength, internal friction angle, and cohesion of KURT rock were reduced 6%, 12%, 7%, and 3% until the applied stress was 70% of UCS. But when the applied stress reached 90% of UCS, the results were more reduced 69%, 72%, 62%, and 24%, respectively.
