Flashing Traffic Light Control Method Based on Deep Learning (딥러닝 기반의 야간 점멸신호 제어 기법)

  • 본 논문에서는 딥러닝을 기반으로 하는 야간 점멸신호 제어를 통하여 신호 위반과 과속에 의한 교통사고로부터 보행자와 운전자의 인명피해 최소화를 목표로 한다. 제안된 기법은 딥러닝을 기반으로 하여 교차로에서 심야 보행자 인식률을 향상시키고, 야간 점멸신호를 연동 제어하는 기법을 제안하고 있다. 야간의 영상 인식 과정은 어두운 제약조건의 환경에서 떨어지는 영상인식을 보완하기 위하여 PIR 센서로부터 물체를 인식한다. 아두이노의 PIR 센서에서 인식된 물체에 대하여 보행자 여부를 판단하기 위하여 YOLO 알고리즘을 적용한다. 젯슨자비에NX로부터 수신받은 정보를 기반으로 점멸신호에서 일반 신호등 신호로 전환 후 보행자 횡단 시간을 고려하여 일정 시간이 지난 후 다시 일반 신호등 신호에서 점멸신호로 전환한다. 본 논문은 심야의 제한된 조건에서 보행자 식별을 통하여 교차로에서 보행자와 운전자의 인명피해 줄일 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.

A Study on the Beginning Time of Flashing Green Signals for Pedestrians (보행신호등 녹색점멸신호의 시작시점에 관한 연구)

  • Pedestrians are exposed to accidents as a result of the lack of understanding the meaning of a flashing green signal. This study was to designed to relate changes of pedestrians' crossing characteristics as a functions of flashing green signal timings. A field survey was conducted to collect pedestrian preference and safety and it was examined by signal operation experiment. Two versions of new pedestrian signal timings were compared to the existing pedestrian signal timings. The results indicated that the number of pedestrians who starts to cross during flashing green signals was significantly decreased when flashing green signals started at 1/2 or 2/3 point of crossing. However, the number of pedestrians who remain in the crossing during red signals was significantly increased when flashing green signals started at 2/3 point of crossing. This study concludes that starting flashing green signals at 1/2 point of crossing is the safest. Also, implication and directions for its practical relevance were discussed.

Analysis of Accident Characteristics and Improvement Strategies of Flash Signal-operated Intersection in Seoul (서울시 점멸신호 운영에 따른 교통사고 분석 및 개선방안에 관한 연구)

  • Traffic accident frequency and severity level in Korea are known to be very serious. Especially the number of pedestrian fatalities was much worse and 1.6 time higher than the OECD average. According to the National Police Agency, the flash signals are reported to have many safety benefits as well as travel time reduction, which is opposed to the foreign studies. With this background of expanding the flash signal, this research aims to investigate the overall impact of the flash signal operation on safety, investigating and comparing the accident occurrence on the flash signal and the full signal intersections. For doing this accident prediction models for both flash and full signal intersections were estimated using independent variables (geometric features and traffic volume) and 3-year (2011-2013) accident data collected in Seoul. Considering the rare and random nature of accident occurrence and overdispersion (variance > mean) of the data, the negative binomial regression model was applied. As a result, installing wider crosswalk and increasing the number of pedestrian push buttons seemed to increase the safety of the flash signal intersections. In addition, the result showed that the average accident occurrence at the flash signal intersections was higher than at the full signal-operated intersections, 9% higher with everything else the same.

Design and Implementation of Response type of Flickering Green Signal System using Beacon Message (비콘메세지를 이용한 반응형 녹색점멸 신호시스템 설계 및 구현)

  • As a domestic traffic control signal system, either the system with which a traffic signal turns into green at regular intervals or the system with which an amber or a red signal flickers on local roads without heavy traffic at midnight has been utilized. However, when the former system is used for roads with light traffic at midnight, delays and congestion can be incurred. Besides, in case of the latter signal system, the risk of vehicle crash is high. This study proposes a response type of flickering green signal system that rearranges signal system after analyzing beacon messages including sensor data. The proposed system, on a trunk road or a branch road at midnight, makes the signal keep flickering in green; When a vehicle enters the range of RSE, the transfer coverage, it transmits beacon messages regularly and Agent System analyzes the messages and alters the signal. It is a system by which vehicles move following the altered signal system, which will not only ensure smooth flow but also prevent vehicles from crashing on a road with light traffic. As a result of a simulation, traffic throughput and the average waiting time displayed 10 to 30 percent better improvement than existing signal systems, in terms of performance.

An Analysis of Pedestrian Behavior at Crosswalks of Signalized Intersections (신호교차로 횡단보도 위치에 따른 보행자의 행태분석)

  • 일반적으로 교차로에서의 보행자 사고는 대부분이 횡단보도에서나 횡단보도 주변에서 발생하는 것이 많다. 이것은 운전자의 안전의식부족뿐만 아니라 보행자들이 교통법규를 지키지 않기 때문이다. 교통사고는 운전자나 보행자를 막론하고 안전의식 수준 및 안전시설의 질적 수준과 밀접한 관련이 있다. 특히 횡단보도 위치와 관련한 정지선에 대한 기준이 없어서 횡단보도 전후에 정지선이 2개가 설치된 곳이 많아 차량간의 사고를 유발하고, 보행자는 보행동선을 단축하기 위해 횡단보도 주변횡단이라는 위험한 행태를 유발하지만 이에 대한 연구나 대안제시가 이루어지지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 요인분석법이란 다변량 통계기법을 통해서 사고기록과 형태자료를 분석하였다. 사고기록은 정지선이 2개에서 1개로 변경된 25개 교차로에 대한 보행자와 차량의 유형별, 위치별, 피해정도별 사고기록을 조사 분석하고 행태분석은 현재 정지선이 2개인 곳과 기하구조가 유사한 정지선 1개인 곳을 하나의 쌍으로 해서 모두 8쌍(16개의 교차로 횡단보도)를 조사 분석하였으며, 마지막으로 설문조사를 통해서 보행자의 교통법규 준수와 인식정도에 대한 조사를 통해 보행자들의 인식과 행태조사를 통한 교통법규 준수 정도를 알아보았다. 사고자료의 분석을 통해서 첫째, 정지선이 2개인 교차로는 교차로내 차량사고, 접근부의 후면 추돌사고, 횡단보도에서 보행자사고가, 둘째, 정지선이 1개인 교차로는 유출부 차량사고가 많은 것으로 나타났으며, 행태자료의 분석을 통해서는 첫째, 정지선이 2개인 곳은 횡단보도를 이탈 또는 진입하면서 횡단하는 보행자, 점멸신호에 횡단 시작하는 보행자의 행태와 보행자 신호에 횡단보도를 통과하는 차량, 둘째, 정지선이 1개일 때는 횡단보도를 침범해서 정지하는 차량, 도로에 내려서서 기다리는 보행자가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 설문조사와 행태조사를 종합하면, 보행자들의 인식으로는 약 71%의 응답자와 점멸신호의 의미를 알고, 전체 응답자의 약 58%가 점멸신호에 건너지 않고 기다린다는 응답(교통법규준수)을 했으며, 실제 행태에서는 약 12.4%가 위반하는 것(87.6% 법규준수)으로 나타났다. 보행자들이 응답한 것보다 실제 행태에서는 더 많은 보행자가 교통법규를 준수하는 것으로 나타났으며, 횡단보도를 이용하는데 있어서 횡단보도를 침범하는 차량과 신호시간이 적다는 의견이 많았다.

Design of new green flashing signal system using the Lenticular technique (렌티큘러 기법을 적용한 새로운 녹색점멸신호 시스템 디자인)

  • Green light flashing signals of pedestrian lights can cause lots of confusion for pedestrians, resulting in serious road traffic problems. In this study, a new signalling lamp was proposed using the Lenticular technique to make the signals of pedestrians entering and not entering crosswalks look different. In order to review the possibility of introducing this signal, we conducted a cognitive test on the signal of the Lenticular. As a result of the experiment, the subjects were able to distinguish red and green flashing signals according to the distance. Based on this, we found the possibility of introducing lenticular signals that could prevent pedestrian accidents and prevent excessive crossings. In the future, we will manufacture and experiment with real traffic lights and actively examine the introduction plan.

Safety Evaluation of Flashing Yellow Operation at Night (야간 황색점멸신호 운영에 따른 안전성 평가)

  • This study deals with the relationships between flashing operation and traffic accident at signalized intersections. The objective of this study is to analyze safety effects of the yellow flashing operation at night. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular attention to evaluating the safety results from signal operation of Cheongju's 190 signalized intersections using before-after evaluation with comparison group that are categorized by highway function. The main results are as follow. First, the numbers of traffic accidents and of fatalities/injuries in two highway types (arterial and collector road) have increased after operating the yellow flashing signal at night. Second, the numbers of accidents, fatalities/injuries, severe accidents and of fatalities/severe injuries in group A(arterial) have increased by 19%, 36%, 15% and 14%, respectively. Finally, the numbers of accidents, fatalities/injuries, severe accidents and fatalities/severe injuries in group B (collector) have increased by 50%, 64%, 41% and 77%, respectively.

A New Proposal of Pedestrian Signal Time (보행자 신호체계에 대한 새로운 제안)

  • The pedestrian signal systems operating presently could provide more time for the pedestrian to cross the street than the previous system, but it would increase the cycle length and cause longer delays at the signalized intersections. For instance, more than 80% of traffic signals would have to have the cycle length increased by 10sec in Daegu Metropolitan areas. Therefore. the purpose of this study is to propose a pedestrian traffic signal time that not only maintains the safety of the pedestrian but also reduces the traffic cycle length. The proposed pedestrian signal time is set to enable enough time for the elderly to cross and the flashing time is set low enough to deter the ordinary person. This new pedestrian signal time can reduce the traffic cycle length at intersections and prevent the Pedestrian crossing during flashing time. In addition to the flashing green should be changed to flashing red to warn the pedestrian he should not begin crossing as opposed to the flashing green which suggest he could cross. In this study, the speed of 1.1m/sec and 0.85m/sec are applied to the new proposed signal time for normal and elderly person respectively after analyzing data collected at Daegu Metropolitan area.

신호기운영방법에 따른 고령운전자 비신호교차로 교통사고분석

  • 비신호교차로 사고를 대상으로 신호기 운영방법과 차로폭에 따른 고령운전자 교통사고 특성을 파악하기 강화군, 무주군, 원주시, 보령시의 3년간(2007년-2009년) 교통사고 데이터를 사용하여 일반운전자와 고령운전자의 사고를 비교, 분석하였다. 그 결과, 고령운전자 교차로 교통사고는 점멸신호기로 운영되는 교차로사고는 일반운전자보다 다소 높았으며, 정면충돌사고 일반운전자 사고의 8배나가 높게 나타났다. 또한 고령운전자 교차로 교통사고는 차로폭이 6m초과 13m이하의 교차로에서 41.0%가 발생하여 왕복 3-4차로에서의 교차로에서 고령운전자의 교통사고 발생률이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 고령운전자의 교차로 교통사고 예방을 위해서는 6m초과 13m이하의 도로에 대한 대책이 마련되어야 할 것이며, 점멸신호기로 운영되는 교차로에 대한 점검이 필요하다.
