This study undertakes an evaluation of blast effect through the analysis of the contribution rate and effect that different artificial joint number, artificial joint spacing and artificial joint angle have on blast velocity. Blast velocity according to the different state of the artificial joint was obtained using AUTODYN, a dynamic analysis program. The result of the numerical analysis was subjected to further normalization analysis. For the contribution rate of design factors was analyzed using the robust design method. The orthogonal array used in the analysis was $L_9(3^4)$ and each parameters were having 3 levels. The result of normalization analysis regarding the artificial joint angle was indicated a tendency in which blast velocity decreased. The result of analyzing blast velocity regarding artificial joint spacing and artificial joint angle was indicated a tendency in which blast velocity decreased as artificial joint spacing increased when the angle was perpendicular. In the case of blast velocity contribution rates they were ranked in the descending order of artificial joint angle, artificial joint number, artificial joint spacing.
In this study, scaled model tests were performed to investigate the deformation behaviors around tunnels located in anisotropic rocks. Fifteen types of test models which had respectively different joint angles and rock pressure conditions were made, where the modelling materials were the mixture of sand, plaster and water. All of the tested models showed the shear failure mechanism at the stress-concentrated regions and sliding phenomena according to the joint planes. The direction of joint inclination turned out to have great effect on the tunnel deformation behaviors. The models of joint inclination less than $30^{\circ}$ showed considerable floor heavings. The model of $50^{\circ}$ joint inclination showed the least tunnel convergence among the tested models regardless of rock pressure condition, so that it was thought as the most stable model. Furthermore, the failure mechanisms and deformation behaviors of tunnel models were strongly dependent on the coefficient of rock pressure.
Recently, the frequency of occurring dynamic events such as earthquakes, explosives blasting and other types of vibration has been increasing. Besides, the chances of exposure for rock discontinuities to free faces get higher as the scale of rock mass structures become larger. For that reason, the frictional behavior of rock joints under dynamic conditions needs to be investigated. In this study, artificially fractured rock joint specimens were prepared in order to examine the dynamic frictional behavior of rough rock joint. Roughness of each specimen was characterized by measuring surface topography using a laser profilometer and a series of shaking table tests was carried out. For mated joints, the static friction angle back-calculated ken the yield acceleration was $2.7^{\circ}$ lower than the tilt angle on average. The averaged dynamic friction angle for unmated joints was $1.8^{\circ}$ lower than the tilt angle. Displacement patterns of sliding block were classified into 4 types and proved to be related to the first order asperity of rock joint. The tilt angle and the static friction angle for mated joints seem to be correlated to micro average inclination angle which represents the second order asperity. The tilt angle and the dynamic friction angle for unmated Joints, however, have no correlation with roughness parameters. Friction angles obtained by shaking table test were lower than those by direct shear test.

Distinct Element Method(DEM) has a great advantage to model the discontinuous behaviour of jointed rock masses such as rotation, sliding, and separation of rock blocks. Geometrical data of joints by a field monitoring is not enough to model the jointed rock mass though the results of DE analysis for the jointed rock mass is most sensitive to the distributional properties of joints. Also, it is important to use a properly joint law in evaluating the stability of a jointed rock mass because the joint is considered as the contact between blocks in DEM. In this study, a stochastic modelling technique is developed and the dilatant rock joint is numerically modelled in order to consider th geometrical and mechanical properties of joints in DE analysis. The stochastic modelling technique provides a assemblage of rock blocks by reproducing the joint distribution from insufficient joint data. Numerical Modelling of joint dilatancy in a edge-edge contact of DEM enable to consider not only mechanical properties but also various boundary conditions of joint. Preprocess Procedure for a stochastic DE model is composed of a statistical process of raw data of joints, a joint generation, and a block boundary generation. This stochastic DE model is used to analyze the effect of deviations of geometrical joint parameters on .the behaviour of jointed rock masses. This modelling method may be one tool for the consistency of DE analysis because it keeps the objectivity of the numerical model. In the joint constitutive law with a dilatancy, the normal and shear behaviour of a joint are fully coupled due to dilatation. It is easy to quantify the input Parameters used in the joint law from laboratory tests. The boundary effect on the behaviour of a joint is verified from shear tests under CNL and CNS using the numerical model of a single joint. The numerical model developed is applied to jointed rock masses to evaluate the effect of joint dilation on tunnel stability.
This study aimed to develop high-efficiency grouting techniques under deep-depth conditions by experimentally verifying the applicability of various injection materials. Particle size analysis and injection model experiments were conducted with Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Micro Cement (MC) to evaluate the injection performance of each material. Using Barton's Cubic Network theory, the rock fracture spacing was calculated for domestic deep-depth standards, specifically below 40 meters underground. The analysis of particle size passability under selected conditions showed that MC could pass through the rock fracture gaps, while OPC could not. According to the results of the injection model experiments using experimental devices and area calculation software, OPC failed in injection due to its larger particle size, whereas MC was capable of injection even under high-viscosity conditions. Based on these findings, the study quantitatively and visually derived the applicability of grouting materials under deep-depth conditions, and high-viscosity MC material is expected to be effective for waterproofing enhancement in deep-depth rock fracture surfaces.
This study examined the magnitude and distribution of earth pressure on the excavation wall in jointed rock mass by considering different groundwater conditions under various rock types, joint inclination angles, and earth pressure coefficients. Based on a physical model test (Son and Park, 2014), extended studies were conducted considering rock-structure interactions based on the discrete element method, which can consider the joints characteristics of rock mass. The results showed that the earth pressure was highly influenced by the groundwater condition as well as the rock type, joint inclination angle, and earth pressure coefficient. The results were also compared with Peck's earth pressure for soil ground, and clearly showed that the earth pressure in jointed rock mass can be greatly different from that in soil ground.
This study was conducted to evaluate the influences of the angle of artificial joints, the distance between the artificial joints and the blast hole, and the number of artificial joints on the pressure wave propagation, crack propagation, and blast wave velocity. The evaluation was conducted numerically by use of the Euler-Lagrange solver supported by the AUTODYN, which is a dynamic FEM program. As a result, it was found that the blast wave velocity was decreased most rapidly as either the distance between the artificial joint and the blast hole was decreased or the angle of the artificial joint was increased. In contrast to the case of no artificial joint, the amount of attenuation of the blast wave velocity was considerably large when an artificial joint was present. However, the effect of the number of artificial joint on the attenuation of the blast wave velocity was negligible under the given condition.
The joint model has influence on the results of discontinuum analysis. In this study the results of discontinuum analysis with Barton-Bandis joint model(BB model) and with Mohr-Coulomb joint model(MC model) are compared. The results of continuum analysis under the same condition are compared with the results of discontinuum analysis to investigate the behavior of rockmass around tunnel. The result of continuum analysis and that of discontinuum analysis with BB model show similar distribution of displacement and stress. On the other hand, the discontinuum analysis with MC model shows different displacement distribution and stress distribution. Moreover, the displacement and minor principal stress of the discontinuum analysis with MC model are smaller than those of continuum analysis, although the joints are explicitly considered in the discontinuum analysis. These results are originated from the limitation of MC model in simulating joint deformation behavior, especially the assumption of constant dilation jingle independent of it)int 7hear displacement.
In this study, a joint survey system was developed to efficiently analyze geometrical characteristics of joint structures in rock mass using photogrammetric technique. The system includes both hardware and software. The hardware consists of a high resolution image camera for photographing image of a surface of rock body, a direction controlling system for adjusting the attitude of camera, and a digital compass for measuring the rotation angle of camera. The software was also developed in order to analyze the orientation, density, mean length of joints revealed on the images of rock surfaces. The software developed in this study was named as JointeXtractor. As applying this system into several field measurements, the orientation, density, mean length of joints could be quantitatively measured through analyzing the images of rock surfaces, in which the case of a difficult-to-access area was especially included for the test of the system.
This paper examined the effect of step-wise excavation depth on the earth pressure against an excavation wall in rock mass. Numerical parametric studies were conducted based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to carry out the problems in rock mass. Controlled parameters included step-wise excavation depth, rock types, and joint conditions (joint shear strength and joint inclination angle). The magnitude and distribution characteristics of the induced earth pressure in a jointed rock mass were investigated and compared with Peck's earth pressure for soil ground. The results showed that the earth pressure against an excavation wall in rock mass were highly affected by different rock and joint conditions, and the effect of step-wise excavation depth increased as a rock type is deteriorated more. In addition, it was found that the earth pressure against an excavation wall in rock mass might be considerably different from Peck's empirical earth pressure for soil ground.
