  • The wide use of metal dusts have been found in industrial field and many dust explosion accidents occur by fire spread of dust layer. In this study, we developed a new experimental device to examine fire and explosion characteristics of the dust layer. Aspects of the burning zone over metals(Mg, Zr, Ta, Ti, etc) and PMMA(Polymethyl methacrylate) dust layers have been investigated experimentally to clarify behaviors (Spread rate and quenching distance) and effects of $N_2$ surrounding gas on the fire spread over metal dust layers. From the experimental result, it was found that the spread rate of metal dusts is larger than PMMA, the dependability of spread rate over the thickness of dust layer is small, and the minimum oxygen concentration of spread flame over Mg dust layer is 3.6-3.7 vol%. Since high correlation between the spread rate and the reciprocal of quenching distance was seen, relative risk prediction in those inflammable parameters can be predicted.

  • Numerical analysis was conducted to predict the damage of indoor gas explosion for the propagation of explosion flame. Indoor gas diffusion distribution due to gas leakage was obtained by diffusion equation that adopted initial conditions from reference. Enthalpy of each gas-mixture ratio and reduced mechanism was applied to calculate flame temperature, and laminar combustion velocities with the variant of each gas concentration from reference were applied to the gas mixture. Turbulent combustion velocity was modeled by coupling of turbulent energy and laminar combustion velocity in k-$\epsilon$ model. For the analysis of flame propagation cartesian and cylindrical coordinate were used to indoor position and flame propagation respectively. The study analyzes the cause of pressure rising with the variation of flame propagation by glass damage, and the result shows that indoor pressure rising with ignition position varies window dimension.

  • Experimental studies have been performed to examine the influences of wall obstructions in a rectangular confinement. Three wall obstacles with blockage ratios ranging from 10 to 30% were used. Temporally resolved flame front images were recorded by a high-speed video camera to investigate the interaction between a propagating flame and the obstacle. The local flame displacement speed and its probability density functions(PDFs) were obtained for the wall obstructions. During the interaction with the sharp-edges of the wall obstacles, the local propagation speed increased. The increase of local speed became larger as the obstruction ratio increased. However, the averaged flame displacement speeds with different blockage ratios were not significantly different within the chamber as shown in the paper of Park et al. The flame front interaction investigated in this work was less dependent of the obstacle obstructions compared to that published in the literature for large L/D.

  • The aim of this study is to evaluate the characteristics of explosion and flame velocity that can be utilized to factories where Mg-Al alloy metal powders are handled in the form of raw materials, products or by-product for similar dust explosion prevention and mitigation. Because the strength of the blast pressure is the result due to flame propagation, flame velocity in dust explosion can be utilized as a valuable information for damage prediction. An experimental investigation was carried out on the influences of content ratio of Mg-Al alloy (mean particle size distribution of 151 to 161 ${\mu}m$). And a model of flame propagation velocity based on the time to peak pressure and flame arrival time in dust explosion pressure, assuming the constant burning velocity, leads to a representation of flame velocity during dust explosion. As the results, the maximum flame velocity of Mg-Al(60:40 wt%), Mg-Al(50:50 wt%) and Mg-Al(40:60 wt%) was estimated 15.5, 18 and 15.2 m/s respectively, and also tend to change with content ratio of Mg-Al.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact response behaviors of glass/epoxy laminated composite plates subjected to the transversely impact of a steel ball. For this purpose, dynamic finite element analysis based on the higher-order shear defomation plate theory is used to compute the contact forces, rebound velocity of a steel ball, and dynamic strain response histories. And low-velocity and high-velocity impact experiments were conducted to compare the results and compute the wave propagation velocities. The results obtained from impact experiments are in good agreement with those of dynamic finite element analysis. Also the wave propagation velocities obtained from high-velocity impact experiments and wave propagation theory agree well, and wave velocities were higher in the smaller radius of steel ball.

  • In this research, we study the propagation of longitudinal and transverse waves through a metal rod including a liquid layer using computational and experimental analyses. The propagation characteristics of longitudinal and transverse waves obtained by the computational and experimental analyses were consistent with the wave propagation theory for both cases, that is, the homogeneous metal rod and the metal rod including a liquid layer. The fluid-structure interaction modeling technique developed for the computational wave propagation analysis in this research can be applied to the more complex structures including solid-liquid interfaces.

  • Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), an increasingly growing acquisition technique in the oil and gas exploration and seismology fields, has been used to record seismic signals using optical cables as receivers. With the development of imaging methods for DAS data, full waveform inversion (FWI) is been applied to DAS data to obtain high-resolution property models such as P- and S-velocity. However, because the DAS systems measure strain from the phase distortion between two points along optical cables, DAS data must be transformed from strain to particle velocity for FWI algorithms. In this study, a plane-wave FWI algorithm based on the relationship between strain and horizontal particle velocity in the plane-wave assumption is proposed to apply FWI to DAS data. Under the plane-wave assumption, strain equals the horizontal particle velocity, which is scaled by the velocity at the receiver position. This relationship was confirmed using a numerical experiment. Furthermore, 4-layer and modified Marmousi-2 velocity models were used to verify the applicability of the proposed FWI algorithm in various survey environments. The proposed FWI was implemented in land and marine survey environments and provided high-resolution P- and S-velocity models.

  • Quantitative analysis and imaging of elastic wave propagation are very important for the materials evaluation as well as flaw detection. The elastic wave propagation in an anisotropic media is more complex, and analysis and imaging become essential for flaw detection and materials evaluation. In the anisotropic media, the wave velocity is dependent on the propagation direction. In addition, the direction of group velocity is different from that of phase velocity, the direction of energy flow is not same as the propagation direction of wavefront (beam skewing effect). Especially, this effect becomes critical for the large anisotropic media such as fiber composite materials, and the results using elastic waves for those materials have to be analyzed considering the wave propagation mechanism. Since the analytical approach for the wave propagation in the anisotropic materials is limited, the numerical analysis such as finite difference method (FDM) have been used for these case. Therefore, 2-dimensional FDM program for the elastic wave propagation is developed, and wave propagation in anisotropic media are simulated.
