  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the flame propagation speed, radiation range, diffusion pattern and combustion completion time of a fire by filling a divided space with single combustible substance. It was found that the flame propagation speed was the fastest (0.2 s) for kerosene and the lowest (82.1 s) for alcohol. In the case of paint thinner, it took 19.0 s for the flame to reach its peak at the fastest speed after ignition while in the case of alcohol, it took 138.6 s for the flame to reach its peak at the lowest speed. In the case of the combustion of 200 ml of flammable liquids, the combustion completion time was 79.9 s for paint thinner, which is the shortest, 135 s for gasoline, 170 s for kerosene, 231.4 s for diesel and 337.0 s for alcohol. In addition, when flammable liquids are combusted, the lower part of the flame is governed by laminar flow pattern and the upper part of the flame showed turbulence pattern. In the case of a test performed for bean oil, it could be seen that if the fire source was removed, the flame was automatically extinguished without further combustion and that white smoke was generated due to incomplete combustion.

  • Using 20 L spherical explosion vessel and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), an experimental investigation was carried on explosion characteristics and thermal decomposition of some reactive organic dust. As the result, the minimum explosion concentration of Benzoyl peroxide (BPO), Phthalic anhydride (PA) and 1-Hydroxybenzotriazol (HBT) exist between 10 and 15 g/$m^3$, which indicates that their explosion sensitivity are high. The maximum Kst values of HBT, PA and 97 % BPO are 251, 146 and 80 [$bar{\cdot}m/s$], respectively and the explosion severity of HBT is the explosion class of St-2. The flame velocity was also calculated from the combustion time of dust and flame arrival time to estimate the flame propagation characteristics in a closed vessel. The decomposition temperature and heat of decomposition reaction for 97 % BPO and HBT are $107^{\circ}C$ (1025 J/g), $214^{\circ}C$ (1666 J/g), respectively and it was found that these low decomposition temperature and high released heat affect the explosion characteristics.

  • The Global Positioning System (GPS) was developed for military purposes and developed as it is today by opening civilian signals (GPS L1 frequency C/A signals). The current satellite orbits the earth about twice a day to measure the position, and receives more than 3 satellite signals (initially, 4 to calculate even the time error). The three-dimensional position of the ground receiver is determined using the data from the radio wave departure time to the radio wave Time of Arrival(TOA) of the received satellite signal through trilateration. In the case of navigation using GPS in recent years, a location error of 5 to 10 m usually occurs, and quite a lot of areas, such as apartments, indoors, tunnels, factory areas, and mountainous areas, exist as blind spots or neutralized areas outside the error range of GPS. Therefore, in order to acquire one's own location information in an area where GPS satellite signal reception is impossible, another method should be proposed. In this study, IMU(Inertial Measurement Unit) combined with an acceleration and gyro sensor and a geomagnetic sensor were used to design a system to enable location recognition even in terrain where GPS signal reception is impossible. A method to track the current position by calculating the instantaneous velocity value using a 9-DOF IMU and a geomagnetic sensor was studied, and its feasibility was verified through production and experimentation.

  • It has been widely known that the seismic piezo-cone penetration test (SCPTU) is one of the most useful techniques for investigating the geotechnical characteristics including dynamic soil properties. As the practical applications in Korea, SCPTU was carried out at two sites in Busan and four sites in Incheon, which are mainly composed of alluvial or marine soil deposits. From the SCPTU waveform data obtained from the testing sites, the first arrival times of shear waves were and the corresponding time differences with depth were determined using the cross-over method, and the shear wave velocity profiles (VS) were derived based on the refracted ray path method based on Snell's law and similar to the trend of cone tip resistance (qt) profiles. In Incheon area, the testing depths of SCPTU were deeper than those of conventional down-hole seismic tests. Moreover, for the application of the conventional CPTU to earthquake engineering practices, the correlations between VS and CPTU data were deduced based on the SCPTU results. For the empirical evaluation of VS for all soils together with clays and sands which are classified unambiguously in this study by the soil behavior type classification Index (IC), the authors suggested the VS-CPTU data correlations expressed as a function of four parameters, qt, fs, $\sigma$, v0 and Bq, determined by multiple statistical regression modeling. Despite the incompatible strain levels of the down-hole seismic test during SCPTU and the conventional CPTU, it is shown that the VS-CPTU data correlations for all soils clays and sands suggested in this study is applicable to the preliminary estimation of VS for the Korean deposits and is more reliable than the previous correlations proposed by other researchers.

  • In this study, in order to find out the movement of polluted substance that is flown into the river and the characteristics of dispersion, the experiment that used the RI (Radio Isotope) tracer in the river was undertaken, and by using the experiment result, the figure modelling was undertaken to analyze the general type of pollutant dispersion. In addition, in order to calculate more accurate dispersion range and moving time, the experiment was done in about 2km from the measuring points of Namdaecheon around the Yongdam Dam of the upper Geum River to the lower stream, and modeling was undertaken for the 20km zone from the measuring points to the lower stream. In order to find out the flow of river and dispersion of polluted substance, RMA (Resource Modeling Associates)-2 and RMA-4 program are used in study. The site experiment using the RI was implemented for the experiment in the applied area and the same area, and the distance between each zone was set for 1㎞ with the slight difference for site situation and measured the density date of one second distance through the NaI apparatus to measure the density data of one second interval. On the basis of this measured data, it is compared and analyzed with the result of figure copy of RMA-2 and RMA-4 models to make the comparison and analysis of density distribution following the change in expansion coefficient that makes great influence on expansion range and dispersion in natural rivers. The influence of expansion coefficient on river can be researched and the measured density data, the maximum and minimum density time, and the basic data to calculate the expansion coefficient was prepared in this study.
