  • The electric and magnetic fields radiated by lightning discharges are significantly changeable in amplitude and time, one of the topics concerning electromagnetic compatibility of modern electronic systems is the efficient and economic protection against transient voltages caused by not only by direct but also by nearly lightning strokes. In this paper, in order to obtain the detailed informations about lightning electromagnetic impulse waveforms, the electric and magnetic fields radiated by lightning discharges in the summer of 1995 were measured by a fast electric antenna and a loop-type magnetic field sensor, and their charac- teristics were presented and analyzed. The signals of the electric and magnetic fields were re- corded continuously by a transient digitizer having a resolution of 12 bit and a memory capacity of 5000 point and using a sampling time of 200 ns. The electric and magnetic field waveforms associated with lightning return strokes are significantly different with those of intracloud discharges. The magnetic fields radiated by intracloud lightning discharges have essentially the same waveforms as the electric field when the lightning discharhes are at distance of 50 km or more. Also the main frequency components of the electric and magnetic fields radiated by lightning discharges range from a few kHz to several hundred kHz.

  • In this paper, we investigate interference between short-range radiocommunication devices(SRDs) with frequency hopping spread spectrum(FHSS) and direct sequence spread spectrum(DSSS) methods when they are in the same frequency bands. In order to analyze interference from unwanted emission of SRD with DSSS to that of FHSS, Monte-carlo(MC) simulation method is employed and interference probabilities are calculated. We simulate interference scenarios in accordance with several duty cycles and bandwidths. It is also assumed that the propagation model is free space. The effect of distance between interfering transmitter and victim receiver is analyzed and bit error rate(BER) is simulated. From the interference analysis results, it is shown that duty cycle affects compatibility more than band-width does. Also, we can make sure of the separation distance which satisfies BER criterion when there are only one interfering transmitter and multiple interfering transmitters.

  • The electrostatic charging/discharging mechanism and its effects, and the system design considerations in the space plasma environment are studied in this paper. The electrostatic discharge (ESD) effects are carefully taken into account for a design of the satellite system at the early stage of the development. Generally, the electrical design requirements are specified to protect the satellite system from the ESD effects in the electromagnetic compatibility specifications. Those requirements are included the grounding, the bonding, the shielding, the conductive coating, the electric interfacing and so on. The space charging is caused by the increasing of the voltage difference between the each locations on the satellite surface. If the space charging is continued up to threshold, it may be occurred the system failure. This phenomenon is depended on the mission of system, electrical and mechanical configuration, system operation, and orbit condition. Therefore the related requirements are properly tailored and concentrated into the safety design.
