Laser-induced plasma emission spectra of halogens in the helium gas flow and pulsed jet (헬륨 가스 플로우와 가스 펄스 젯에서 할로겐족 원소들의 레이저유도 플라즈마 방출 스펙트럼)

  • Detection of halogens using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in open air is very difficult since their strong atomic emission lines are located in VUV region. In NIR region, there are other emission lines of halogens through electronic transitions between excited states. However, these lines undergo Stark broadening severely. We report the observation of the emission lines of halogens in laser-induced plasma (LIP) spectra in NIR region using a helium gas flow. Particularly, the emission lines of iodine at 804.374 and 905.833 nm from LIPs have been observed for the first time. In the helium ambient gas, Stark broadening of the emission lines and background continuum emission could be suppressed significantly. Variations of the line intensity, plasma temperature, and electron density with the helium flow rate was investigated. Detection of chlorine and bromine in flame retardant of rubbers was demonstrated using this method. Finally, we suggest a pulsed helium gas jet as a practical and ecomonical helium gas source for the LIBS analysis of halogens in open air.

국가간 기술혁신 파급경로에 관한 실증분석

  • 본 연구는 기술혁신파급경로를 결정하는 국가 간 무역역할에 대한 실증적인 분석을 목적으로 한다 이 연구목적을 위하여, 최근 자료인 1980년부터 2003년까지 15개 OECD국가를 대상으로 자국의 기술혁신을 결정하는 중요한 변수로 알려진 자국 R&D축적 및 무역대상국의 R&D축적자료를 구축하였으며, 이를 무역지수인 쌍방간에 수출 및 수입량을 경제규모로 나눈 가중지수를 이용하여 유입된 R&D축적량을 구축하였다. 또한 대상변수들의 기술혁신파급역할에 대하여 최근 논의되고 있는 비정상적 패널기법을 이용하여 분석하였다. 최근 제안되고 있는 비정상적 패널기법을 이용하여 국제 간에 기술혁신파급경로를 분석한 결과를 간단하게 요약하면, 다음과 같다. 첫째, 분석대상변수들은 비정상성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 그러나 장기적으로 분석대상변수들이 서로 균형상태를 나타내는 공적분관계에 있음을 알 수 있었다. 셋째, 국가 간에 기술혁신파급경로의 방향과 정도를 파악하기 위하여 패널 공적분계수를 추정하였으나, 설정함수형태에 따라서 여러 가지 상반된 실증결과가 나타났다. 따라서 기존 연구Coe et al., 1995, Keller, 1998, Kao, et al., 1999 그리고 Funk, 2001]의 분석결과 및 그 시사점들이 서로 다른 이유는 분석대상변수들의 선택차이뿐만 아니라, 기술혁신경로에 대한 설정함수형태에 따라서 서로 다른 분석결과가 나타날 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 본 연구에서 나타난 분석결과의 시사점을 보면, 국가 간에 기술혁신파급경로분석은 기술혁신파급을 결정하는 매개변수선정도 중요하지만, 결정된 설명변수들 사이에 어떤 기술혁신파급에 관한 연관관계가 존재하는지에 대한 실증분석 즉 파급경로분석도 매우 중요함을 보여준다. 이러한 파급경로분석에는 기존의 선형가정뿐만 아니라 비선형가정을 이용한 기술파급경로분석을 통한 시사점제안이 요구된다.관적인 시스템을 제공하는 것이다.가 생성된다. $M_{C}$에 CaC $l_2$를 첨가한 경우 $M_{C}$는 완전히 $M_{Cl}$ 로 전이를 하였다. $M_{Cl}$ 에 CaC $l_2$를 첨가하였을 경우에는 아무런 수화물의 변화는 발생하지 않았다. 따라서 CaS $O_4$.2$H_2O$를 CaC $O_3$및 CaC $l_2$와 반응시켰을 때의 AFm상의 안정성 순서는 $M_{S}$ < $M_{C}$< $M_{Cl}$ 로 된다.phy. Catalytic Characteristics of Mn-PC for VOCs Combustion (VOCs 연소용 Mn-PC 촉매 특성)

  • In this study, the catalytic activity of Mn-Phthalocyanine (Mn-PC) for VOCs (acetadehyde, propionaldehyde and toluene) combustion was determined. The reaction was carried out in a fixed bed reactor at the temperature range of $200{\sim}380^{\circ}C$. We investigated the physicochemical properties of Mn-PC before and after the pretreatment (air, $450^{\circ}C$, 1 hr, 60 cc/min) by TGA (Thermogravimetric Analyzer), BET (Brunauer Emmett Teller), EA (Elemental Analyzer), XRD (X-ray Diffractometer) and SEM (Scanning Electronic Microscope). By TGA analysis, 88 wt.% mass loss of Mn-PC was found at $419^{\circ}C$. The BET surface area of Mn-PC increased after the pretreatment. The decomposition and combustion of organic components in Mn-PC were observed by EA analysis. We also confirmed that Mn-PC had transformed into a new manganese oxide phase ($Mn_3O_4$) after the pretreatment by XRD analysis. By SEM analysis, many of the micropores generated during the pretreatment were found. The catalytic activity of Mn-PC with the pretreatment for propionaldehyde combustion was higher than that of $Mn_3O_4$ and fresh Mn-PC. It showed the catalytic activity of Mn-PC with the pretreatment for VOCs combustion by the order of toluene < acetadehyde < propionaldehyde.

In vivo metabolism of carbofuran in resistant and susceptible brown planthoppers, Nilaparvata lugens $St{\aa}l$ (저항성 및 감수성 벼멸구 체내에서의 카보후란 대사)

  • This study was conducted to find out the biochemical or metabolic resistance mechanism of brown planthopper (BPH) to carbofuran. Differences between resistant ($LD_{50};\;20.3{\mu}g/g$) and susceptible strains($LD_{50};\;0.3{\mu}g/g$) were shown. The amounts of carbofuran metabolite, benzofuranol, and the origin, not developed by Thin Layer Chromatography, were much more in the susceptible strain. But the mother compound, carbofuran, was much more in the resistant strain. The tendencies of metabolism one and three hours after treatment were similar in both strains except for the amounts of metabolites described above. From the study, it is supposed that hydrolytic enzyme, esterase, changes its role from cleaving the esteric bond of carbofuran to making conjugates with carbofuran. This seems to be the main resistance mechanism of BPH to carbofuran. Oxidase and transferase may play little or no role in resistance mechanism. Oxidative and transferring enzymes gave no effects on the metabolism of carbofuran in the resistant strain compared with the susceptible strain.

  • Poly (ethylene glycol)-based diblock and triblock thermo- sensitive polyester copolymers were investigated for application on tissue engineering and injectable biomaterials in drug delivery system due to their nontoxicity, biocompatibility and biodegradability. We synthesized the diblock copolymers consisting of methoxy poly (ethylene glycol) (MPEG) (Mn=750 g/mole) and poly $(\varepsilon-caprolactone)$ (PCL) by ring opening polymerization of $\varepsilon-CL$ with MPEG as an initiator in the presence of HCl $Et_2O$. The effect of diblock copolymers on in vivo osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCS) with and without the presence of osteogenic supplements (dexamethasone) was investigated. Thin sections were cut from paraffin embedded tissues and histological sections were stained by H&E, von Kossa, and immunohistochemical staining for osteocalcin. In conclusion, dexamethasone containing thermo- sensitive hydrogel might be improved osteogenic differentiation of BMSCs. We expect the osteoinduction effect to be excellent when it uses stem cell or other osteogenic materials.

Effect of Cathode/anode Weight Ratio in $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ Cell ($LiCoO_2/MPCF$전지에서 정$\cdot$부극 중량비의 영향)

  • Li-ion cells employ lithium transtion metal oxide as the cathode material and carbon as anode material. To manufacture Li-ion cell with higher capacity and better cycle life, the utilization of electrode materials should be as high as possible without lithium deposition onto the carbon surface during charging. A careful design of cell balance between cathode and anode materials as well as a proper charge method is a key factor to design Li-ion cell with long cycle life. In this study, we investigated the effect of cathode/anode weight ratio on the performance of $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cell. First we evaluated the charge-discharge behaviours of half-cells. And cylindrical Li-ion cells were fabricated using graphitized MPCF anode and $LiCoO_2$ cathode. The voltage profiles for each half-cell in $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cell were measured by using lithium metal as a reference electrode. Also, we evaluated the cyclic performance of $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cells according to weight ratio. From the result of experiment $LiCoO_2$ cathode utilization was independent of weight ratio, but MPCF anode utilization was dependant on weight ratio. Also, the optimal weight ratio of $LiCoO_2/MPCF$ cell was found to be $2.0\~2.2$.

Macroscopic Serosal Invasion in Advanced Gastric Cancer (진행성 위암에서 육안적 장막침윤의 의의)

  • Purpose: The macroscopic findings of tumors are not always identical with the microscopic findings. This study investigated the oncologic implications of macroscopic serosal invasion in advanced gastric cancer to find out how to improve the accuracy for the depth of invasion assessed by the surgeon during an operation. Materials and Methods: The medical records of 789 patients with advanced gastric cancer who underwent a gastrectomy at Kyungpook National University Hospital between 1995 and 1999 were reviewed. The prognoses and the recurrence patterns were analyzed according to macroscopic serosal invasion and microscopic serosal invasion, and the clinico-pathological factors of cT3/ss cancers were compared with those of cT3/se cancers. Results: Difference of survival rates according to macroscopic serosal invasion and microscopic serosal invasion revealed statistically significant. Recurrence rates were similar in patients with macroscopic and microscopic serosal invasion (42.2% and 41.4%, respectively). Peritoneal recurrence rates were also similar (19.8% and 21.9%, respectively). The sensitivity and the specificity of macroscopic assessment of serosal invasion were 70.3% and 77.8%, respectively, On univariate and multivariate analyses, Borrmann type I/II cancers and the absence of distant metastases revealed the risk factors for overestimating of serosal invasion. Conclusion: Macroscopic serosal invasion assessed by a surgeon intraoperatively can be used to give a prognosis and to predict the recurrence pattern precisely, although there is a risk for overestimation when the tumor is a Borrmann type I/II cancer or the tumor has no distant metastases. Effects of Different Exercise Intensities on GLUT-4 and GRP-78 Protein Expression in Soleus Muscle of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats with Caffeine Oral Administration (카페인 경구투여가 운동강도 차이에 따른 당뇨유발 흰쥐 가자미근의 GLUT4 및 GRP78 단백질 발현에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigated the response of GLUT-4 and GRP-78 protein expression in soleus muscle of Streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats with caffeine oral administration by imposing different exercise intensities. Rats were randomly divided into 5 groups (n=6 in each group): diabetic group (D), diabetic-caffeine group (DC), diabetic-caffeine group with low intensity exercise (DCL), diabetic-caffeine group with moderate intensity exercise (DCM) and diabetic-caffeine group with high intensity exercise (DCH). The rats in DCL, DCM and DCH groups were exercised acutely by treadmill running for 8 meter/m, 16 meter/m and 25 meter/m, respectively. Little difference in GLUT-4 protein expression was shown in DC and DCL compared to D. GLUT-4 protein expression was decreased in DCM and increased in DCH was observed. GRP-78 protein expressions in DCL, DCM and DCH were little lower than that of D. An increase in GRP-78 protein was observed in DC. Improved insulin sensitivity with acute high intensity exercise gives the rats important therapy that lowers insulin requirement. This improvement of insulin sensitivity for glucose transport in skeletal muscle results from translocation of the GLUT-4 protein from the endoplasmic reticilum to the cell surface and increase in total quantity of GLUT-4 protein. It is not clear what mechanism reduced GRP-78 protein level in exercise group. It is merely conjectured that caffeine-induced lipolysis provided cells with energy in abundance and this relieved stress which cells are subjected to receive when performing exercise.

Geological Environments and Deterioration Causes of the Sitting Buddha Carved on Rockcliff in Bukjiri, Bonghwa (봉화 북지리 마애여래좌상의 지질환경과 훼손원인)

  • The Sitting Buddha Carved on Rockcliff (National treasure No. 201) in Bukjiri consists of porphyritic biotite granite, which was fractured by three joint sets of NE-SW, EW and NS directions. They produced a physical weathering that broke many parts of the Buddha and background. The chemical index of alteration is 59 to 61 from the major elements in the granite that was weathered into producing kaolin minerals from alteration of feldspars and biotite. With weathering degree, major element compositions increase in $SiO_2$ and MnO, whereas decrease in $TiO_2,\;{Fe_2O_3}^t,\;MgO,\;CaO\;and\;K_2O$. Change proporations of trace elements to $Al_2O_3$ increase in all transition elements, Rb and Y, whereas decrease in Li, Sr and Ba. REE pattern increases only in HREE. Particularly, a decrease in CaO, $K_2O$, Sr and Ba results in what they are effluxed to dissolve from feldspars by groundwater. The Buddha image has been deteriorated into joints, color changes, brown rusts, granular decay, microorganic smears by the such weathering causes as deformation, moisture, temperature variation and microorganic living. The moisture, which leaks along the joints in the granite, not only dissolve to decompose minerals but also grows many microorganism and is frozen over during winter. NE-SW and NS joint sets affect to seep in water during rainy days to deteriorate the image because they extend outward.

The Effects of Plasma Endotoxin Level on Survival Time of Terminally Ill Cancer Patients (말기암환자에서 혈장 내독소 농도가 생존기간에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: Since most terminally ill cancer patients die of multiple organ failure, plasma endotoxin concentration levels may be used to predict the life expectancy. This study was performed to evaluate the clinical significance of endotoxin level in plasma as a prognostic factor for survival in patients with terminal cancer. Methods: This study was conducted with 56 terminally ill cancer patients, above 20 years old, from April 2009 through October 2009. Demographic characteristics, Karnofsky performance status, and survival time were evaluated. We analyzed blood levels of white blood cell hemoglobin, hematocrit, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, c-reactive protein, total bilirubin and endotoxin in each patient. Results: We considered following variable for univariate analysis: plasma endotoxin level, sex, age, WBC, hemoglobin, hematocrit, AST, ALT, total bilirubin, CRP and severity of pain. Univariate analysis did not show a significant association between plasma endotoxin level and survival time. However, in a multivariate analysis with factors that were found to be significantly associated with survival sex, WBC count and total bilirubin level in univariate analysis, high levels of plasma endotoxin and short survival time were significantly related. Conclusion: Plasma endotoxin level could be used as a prognostic factor to predict the life expectancy of terminally ill cancer patients.
