When drilling operation is being performed, many physical and chemical changes are occurred near wellbore. To handle various changes of well condition and keep drilling process safe, additives of bulk, such as bentonite for increasing density of drilling mud, barite for increasing viscosity of drilling mud, polymer for chemical control, or surfactant, are added into drilling mud through a mud shear mixer. Because the achievement of the required material property through mud mixing system is essential to stabilize drilling system, it is of importance to analyze multi-phase flow during mud mixing process, which is directly related to increase mixing performance of the system and guarantee the safety of the whole drilling system. In this study, a series of liquid-solid flow simulation based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are performed with comparing to solid concentration in experiment by Gilles et al. [2004] to understand the characteristics of liquid-solid mixing in a mud shear mixer. And then, the simulation-based design of shear mixer are carried out to improve mixing performance in a mud handling system.

The assessment of maneuverability of a ship is very important from the view point of safety of human beings and of pollution of ocean. And, it is quite natural that every ship yard wants to have some tools with which they can build a ship with good maneuverability. But, maneuvarability of a ship is very subtle problem, and to calculate the exact maneuvering motion, lots of captive model tests must be carried out. Futhermore, in the initial design stage we can not make the scale model, because the lines of a ship is not fixed. In this paper, some approximate method to calculate the maneuvering motion of a ship, with the principal dimensions of hull, and propeller, rudder characteristics only, is studied. And, proposed approximate method is used to calculate the turning and zig-zag maneuver of several ships. The results of those calculations and the usability of the method are discussed.

An end-line flame arrester allows free venting in combination with flame protection for vertical vent applications. End-line flame arresters are employed in various fields, especially in shipping. In flame arresters, springs are essential parts because the spring load and the spring's elasticity determine the hood opening moment. In addition, the spring has to work under a high-temperature condition because of the burning gas flame. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical load and elasticity of the spring when the flame starts to appear. Based on simulations of the working process of a specific end-line flame arrester, a thermal and structural analysis of the spring is performed. A three-dimensional model of a burned spring is built using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Results of the CFD analysis are input into a finite element method simulation to analyze the spring structure. The research team focused on three cases of spring loads: 43, 93, and 56 kg, correspondingly, at 150 mm of spring deflection. Consequently, the spring load was reduced by 10 kg after 5 min under a $1,000^{\circ}C$ heat condition. The simulation results can be used to predict and estimate the spring's load and elasticity at the burning time variation. Moreover, the obtained outcome can provide the industry with references to optimize the design of the spring as well as that of the flame arrester.

In this study, a preconverter of an MCFC for an emergency electric power supplier is numerically simulated to increase the hydrogen production from natural gas (methane). A commercial code is used to simulate a porous catalyst with a user subroutine to model three dominant chemical reactions-steam reforming, water-gas shift, and direct steam reforming. To achieve a fuel conversion rate of 10% in the preconverter, the required external heat flux is supplied from the outer wall of the preconverter. The calculated results show that the temperature distribution and chemical reaction are extremely nonuniform near the wall of the preconverter. These phenomena can be explained by the low heat conductivity of the porous catalyst and the endothermic reforming reaction. The calculated results indicate that the use of a compact-size preconverter makes the chemical reaction more uniform and provides many advantages for catalyst maintenance.

Photobioreactor (PBR) that houses and cultivates microalgae providing a suitable environment for its growth, such as light, nutrients, CO2, heat, etc. is now getting more popular in the last decade. Among the many types of PBRs, the bubble column type is very attractive because of its simple construction and easy operation. However, despite the availability of these PBRs, only a few of them can be practically used for mass production. Many limitations still holdback their use especially during their scale-up. To enlarge the culture volume and productivity while supplying optimum environmental conditions, various PBR structures and process control are needed to be investigated. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was economically used to design a bubble-column type PBR taking the place of field experiments. CFD is a promising technique which can simulate the growth and production of microalgae in the PBR. To study bubble column PBR with CFD, the most important factor is the possibility of realizing bubble. In this study, multi-phase models which are generally used to realize bubbles were compared by theoretical approaches and comparing in a 2D simulation. As a result, the VOF (volume of fluid) model was found to be the most effective model to realize the bubbles shape as well as the flow inside PBR which may be induced by bubble injection. Considering the accuracy and economical efficiency, 0.005 second time step size was chosen for 2.5 mm mesh size. These results will be used as criteria for scale-up in the PBR simulation.

The effects of rotary oscillation on the unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder. are numerically investigated in the present study. The numerical solutions for the 20 Wavier-Stokes equation are obtained using a finite volume method Tn the framework of an overlapping grid system. The vortex formation behind a circular cylinder and the hydrodynamics of wake flows for different rotary oscillation conditions are analyzed from the results of numerical simulation. The lock-on region is defined as the region that the natural shedding frequency due to the Karmann Vortex shedding and the forcing frequency due to the forced oscillating a cylinder are nearly same, and the quasi-periodic states are observed around that region. At the intersection between lock-on and non-lock-on region the shedding frequency is bifurcated. After the bifurcation, one frequency fellows the forcing frequency($S_f$) and the other returns to the natural shedding frequency($St_0$). in the quasi-periodic states, the variation of magnitudes and relevant phase changes of $C_L$ with forcing phase are examined.
Modern commercial greenhouse requires the use of advanced climate control system to improve crop production and to reduce energy consumption. As an alternative to classical sensor-based control method, this paper introduces a model-based control method that consists of two models: the predictive model and the evaluation model. As a first step, this paper presents straightforward models to predict the effect of natural ventilation in a greenhouse according to meteorological factors, such as outdoor air temperature, soil temperature, solar radiation and mean wind speed, and structural factor, opening rate of roof ventilators. A multiple regression analysis was conducted to develop the predictive models on the basis of data obtained by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The output of the models are air temperature drops due to ventilation at 9 sub-volumes in the greenhouse and individual volumetric ventilation rate through 6 roof ventilators, and showed a good agreement with the CFD-computed results. The resulting predictive models have an advantage of ensuring quick and reasonable predictions and thereby can be used as a part of a real-time model-based control system for a naturally ventilated greenhouse to predict the implications of alternative control operation.

In order to increase the thickness uniformity in chemical vapor depositon of silicon carbide, we have carried out CFD studies for a CVD apparatus having a horizontally-rotated 3-stage susceptor. We deposited silicon carbide films of 3C-SiC phase showing quite uniform thickness between stages but not uniform one in the stage. The cause of this nonuniformity is thought to be originated from the high rotational speed. And the uniformity between stages can be further increased with the $120^{\circ}$ split type nozzles from CFD results. Through the formation of silicon carbide film on graphite substrates we can make oxidation-resistant and dust-free graphite components with high hardness for the semiconductor applications.

In this paper, a Kriging metamodel-based multi-objective optimization strategy in conjunction with an NSGA-II(non-dominated sorted genetic algorithm-II) has been employed to optimize the valve-plate shape of the axial piston pump utilizing 3D CFD simulations. The optimization process for minimum pressure ripple and maximum pump efficiency is composed of two steps; (1) CFD simulation of the piston pump operation with various combination of six parameters selected based on the optimization principle, and (2) applying a multi-objective optimization approach based on the NSGA-II using the CFD data set to evaluate the Pareto front. Our exploration shows that we can choose an optimal trade-off solution combination to reach a target efficiency of the axial piston pump with minimum pressure ripple.

This study is focused on the comparison of a 3 dimensional numerical and hydraulic model experiment for the flow phenomenon when a lock gate is opened. The lock gate is designed to discharge the flood flow rate at $218m^3/s$ of Solicheon at the Kun Jang national industry complex. The three dimensional ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model of ANSYS CFX-10 of the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) program was used. The characteristics of CFX-10 are able to be simulated effectively for turbulent flow, especially the flow separation of the boundary layer of the two phase interface of air and water. The velocity and the flow pattern of the numerical model was showed to be similar to the results of the hydraulic model experiment.
